I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY JOSEPHSON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
snar'r-ornna'rmo MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Josnrnson, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga andState of Ohio, tain new and useful Improvements in Shaft- Operating Mechanism; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
, This inventioii relates to improvements in mechanism for actuating rock-shafts, and pertains more especially to improved shaftoperating operatively connected with the arm of a shaft for effecting the actuation of said arm in one direction against the action ofa spring, a hand-lever arranged near the foot-lever and operatively connected with the arm of another shaft for effecting the actuation of in one direction simultaneously with and during the rocking of another shaft, and free to be rocked in said direction independently ofthe other shaft.
Another object is to have the arm. of the aforesaid Soond-mentioned shaft free to rock said shaft by the actuation of said arm by the hand-lever in one direction and independently of the aforesaid first-mentioned shaft against theaction of a sprin acting to rock said arm in the-opposite irection upon releasing said tion of said arm b said lever, and to. provide meansfor e eeting the actuation of a said arm against simultaneously with the actuation of the arm of said first-mentioned shaft by the footlever so-that both shafts are operated simultaneously during said actuation of the arm of ,said first-mentioned shaft by the foot-lever.
With these objects in view, and to the end 4 Specification of Letters Patent.
have invented cersuch as .will' mechanism comprising a foot-lever of the firstlever upon said actuathe action of said spring Patented May 29, 1917.
I Application filed December 4, 1916. Serial No. 18'4,885.
of attaining any other advantage hereinafter ap caring, this invention consists 1n certain eatures of construction, and combinations and relative arrangement of parts, hereinafter described in this specification, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings.
In said drawings,
my invention and shows two rock-shafts in cross-section. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2, Fig. 1, lookingin thedirection indicated by the arrow. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 3-3, Fig. 1, look ing upwardly. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sec tion on line 4-4, Fig. 1. Portions are broken away in the drawings to reduce their size.
Referring to said drawings, A and a indicate portlons of the stationary framework of a machine having shaft-operatin mechanism embodying my invention. d3 indicates a suitably. supported substantially horizontally arranged shaft having an upwardly projecting arm I; which has its upper portion provided with a slot 6 extending to the upper extremity of the arm and Figure 1 is an elevation of shaft-operating mechanism embodying centrally through said portion of said arm 1 at a right angle to the shaft. A pivotal belt or member 0 extends and has bearing in the slotted or upper portion of the sbaftarm b andis parallel with the shaft B. A rigid link D has one end-portion thereof loosely embracing the pivotal member C, and a rod E has one end-portion thereof screw-thread ea and-screwed into the other end-portion of said link. The rodE is employed in operatively connecting said link and the connected. shaft '13 with the lower end of an upright lever G whichv is fulcrumed at its upper end, as at g, to the support a and is operatively connected centrally between its ends by a link H with a foot-lever I which is fulcrumedfas at 7, to said support. A spiral spring J, connected'at oneend to said lever and at. its opposite end to the support a, acts \to retain said lever in its normal position in which the shaft-arm b is arranged substantially vertically, as shown.
The link is provided at the screw threaded end-portion of the'rod E with a slot d which extends laterally through the link, I
and said screw-threaded portion of said rod extends into said slot and longitudinally of said link so that said rod before its attachment to the lever G can be manipulated to extend more or less into said slot to 3801irately ad ust the relative arrangement. of the members of, the operative connection 'between the shaft-arm b and the foot-lever I. By the construction hereinbefore de- J ec ztibed, it will he'ohserred that the link]? is rigid withithe rod Brand that s aid rod-and the connected lever I are arranged at one a sidelof the rook-shaft- B. At the opposite side ofand spaced from said shaft is a subk st-antially horizontal rock-shaft 'Lgivhich is shown arranged somewhat lower than hut substantially parallel with the shaft 15. The
shaft L has an upwardly projecting arm Z, 15 haringa slot 8 fvi 'hich extends to the upper extremityofthe arm'and through the: arm at a ight angleth theshaft; .The link I) is a provided with an arm I) which extendsinto the" slot 8 and ivithin said slot has an upwardlfprojeetingmember d. By-the c0nstrnetion hereinheforedescribed it will he "observed that the member d is rigid with the rod Band of eourse'connected to and morahle'with the arm b of the shaft B. The
npwardly projecting outer endq'i n'tionfor memberozflof the arm D is arranged sub- ;stantially at a rightangle to the rod Eand extends transi'ersely of a suhstantiallj ho'ri- .sa a
L and extendsloosely through and isearned hytheslrrtted or upper POPtIOftOf'tl'ifi arm Z.-
aontally arranged ivotal belt or member'm which is substantially parallel with the shaft a The pivotalinemher m is arranged hetw een themeniher 1 oi the arm D=and the v inner end of said arm, hilt contig'uoulq to,-'-
that is, in contact nithf-siaid member (2" of the arrn'Ds Loosely mounted onand embracing the pivotal rnemherm is one,,.endportion of. :1 rod P, and said end-portion of said rod extends through the upperflportion of the slot 8 in the shaft-arm Z and slotted vertically, as at if Land the slotextend-st the adjacent extremity of said rod;
; Thezli'pwardl r projeetingmember ll of i the arm D is not only shown in (-oritact with "the pivotal memherimz but as extending between the side Walls of't-he slot 10 as shown in-Fig. that said walls operate to retain said upwardly projectingmeinher ll of ,thearm D'in position centrally between the ends ofth'e-pirotal member 7a., The rod P is operatirely connected with the lower end of a handlever Q which is i'ulorumed, as at 12.
to the sumjoi 't a in proximity to the footlei'er I, and a suitably applied spiral spring R acts to retain the hainldever Q and the connected shafbarm-Z in their normal position in whieh saidfshhft-arrn is arranged substantially vertically as shown and the pivotal member mlSJIi Contact with the member r1 ot the arm D. Thesldewallsoof the Fiat 10 are 'ireferabl'y beveled, asat l3,v at the ad acent extremity of the rod 1 so as to participate in guiding said rod into proper position relatnfe to'the member cl of a EST AVAILABLE COP the arm D during return movement of said rod by the spring R after actuation of said rod by the hand-lever Q ihdependently of the shaft B and in the direction required to actuate the sl1ai't-ann Z in the direction of 7 the shaft B. I l i As the arm l 01' the shaft L is free to l actuated in the direction of the levers I and Q it willlie observed that, during th ctuating of the hand-lei'er Q as required to 7 move the connected rod P in said. dim-am and agains't 'theiaction of the spring Ti said arm [is actuated in said dirertion independently'of the member (1' of the arm 1) and consequently the shaft L is actuated" indem pendentl of the shaft B. When, howevwfl" the footever I is actuated against the action of'thc spring J and in the direction required to effect the moven'ient of the connected rod E toward the footdever the link I) and its 85 arm D and the. shaft-arm 7/ are :mtuated' in said direction so thatnot only is the'shaft B actuated hut the slinlft-arnrLis at once and positive];actuated in said direction through themedium ,of the member (2 of the arm I) and, the pivotal member To carried by the shaft-arm 7/; It will be observed therefore thatthe arin ,l of the shaft Li's prorided at its upper end with a number, such, for in stance,'as the pivotal member m, and that 9 said member m-and the engaging member (1' of the arm I) have such relative arrange ment thatthe arms and Z of the shafm l. and L are simultaneously actuated in the same direction dining the actuation of the 1 foot-lever I in said \lllitft'ilOIhJlfHl that the H arm Z of the shaftli is free tribe actuated in said direction Srasto rock tl'ie'shait L independently of the 'shaft 13.
