The pivotal connections of arm 43, link 40 and lever 38 are relatively disposed to permit the linkage relation and cause the plow beam to be automatically locked or held in-raised position, as shown in Fig. 4. An improved depth-regulating device is provided for each plow-beam, and each of these devices comprises a link 45, which has its front end pivotally connected, as at 47 to arm 43, and its rear end pivoted, as at 52 to a slide 53 on link 40. The upper portion of slide 53 is extended .to form an abutment 54 adapted to engage a screw 49, which has a screw threaded connection with a bracket 50, which is secured to link 40. The front end of screw 49 is bent to form a crank 51 whereby the screw may be turned to adjust its rear end, which engages the slide 53. Link 45, being pivotally connected to the "power-operated arm 43 and eccentrically with respect to the fulcrum of the arm and with respect to pivot 42 between link 40 and arm 43, will be differentially operated relatively to link 40 during shift'of one of the plow-shifting mechanisms. \Vhen the link 40 is in position shown in Fig. 6, and the plow-beam is lowered, link 45 will serve to limit the movement of link 40 through slide 53 and thus serve to limit thedepth of By adjusting screw 49, the point at which link 40 will be arrested may be varied to'permit the plow to travel deeper or to hold it higher in the soil. Links 40 and 45 are both differentially operated by the lifting-arm 43, so that when stopscrew 49 is arrested, slide 53 will lock the entire linkage against movement in one direction. By providing an adjusting screw on each of the links 40, the use of long levers is avoided, and the crank 51, by which the screw may be adjusted, may be conveniently and readily operated from the platform on which the operatorusually stands while the ma ;hine is at work. For strength, each link 45 comprises dual members at the sides of aim 43 and link 40, respectively.
' of teeth 1 In tractor plows, occasion sometimes arises when it is desired to raise or lower one of the plows of the gang without shifting the others, and for this purpose, a long lever is usually provided. In tractor-plows in which a number of levers are necessary for this purpose, it is desirable to dispense with such levers, particularly .if they are operated by power-lifting mechanism, because the quick shift of such lever-s. sometimes causes an injury to the operator. The present invention provides means for manually operating any of the'plow-shifting-mechanisms individually without the use of a power-operated long lever whereby the operator might be injured. For this purpose, a socket 43 is formed on each arm 43 and is adapted to receive one end of a bar or round of metal 43 as shown in Fig. 6. In practice, this bar is carried at some convenient place on the plow or tractor and whenever it becomes necessary to raise one of the plows manually, the operator will insert the bar 43 into the socket 43 of the arm 43 of the lifting-mechanism for the plow to be raised, and easily operate said mechanism. Then the barmay be readily removed and the front portion of the plow will be entirely free from any long swinging levers which the operator must avoid if he is observing the operation of the plows from the tractor or the front of the plow.
The depth-regulating device, hereinbefore described, permits each plow-shifting linkage to be operated by the power or manually, independently of the others.
A ratchet wheel 55is fixed on shaft 23 and is constantly driven by the traction-wheel 22. A controllable driving-connection between the wheel 57 and the plow-operating shaft 44 comprises a sprocket-chain 56, a sprocketwheel 57, which is loose on the shaft 23 and a sprocket-wheel 58 fixed on shaft 44. Sprockets 57 and 58 have the same number so that they. will be driven at the same relative speed. An automatically releasable clutch for driving shaft 44 comprises an arm 59 on or rigid with sprocket 57 and a dog 60 pivoted as at 61 to the outer end of saidarm. Normally, the dog is disposed above the ratchet, so it will fall into engagement therewith when it is released. An abutment 63 is pivotedto said dog, as, at

When the plows are in the ground. the shifting-linkage will be in position shown in Fig. 6. If it is desired to raise them, the .operator "will again .pull lever 07' forward'to complete revolution and during this movement, each linkage will be operated by its topth T3 to catch dog 69 and swingitsiarm' 5L8 forwardly to operate link to and raise the plow. The tail. of said' dog is formed so it will be struck by the curved end. ofthe link 40 to disengage it from tooth 73 after. the linkage has passed'its dead-center, so that it will be automatically held in position to hold the plow and-beam raised.
It sometimes occurs that it' is desired to keep one or more of the" plows raised and to leave the other plows operative by the power-shifting mechanism. The invention provides means for rendering any 'of the plows inoperative by the power-operated lifting-mechan'isin, So that the plows to be used will remain operable by the poweroperated mechanisms. For this purpose, a pin 80 is slidably held. in slide )3 and-is provided witha terminalSl which is adapt-I ed to pass'through an aperture 82? in slide 53 and into aperture 82 in link l0 to lock 1 links 4.5 and lo aguinsti'elative movement. remaining lifting-mechanisms will remain operative by power.
For the purpose of causing the plows to be successively raised, the teeth 73 for the tative succession on shaft 44 and for the purpose of successively releasing the mechanisms, tappets 74 are also placed in rota: tive succession on said shaft. Itesultantly,
alternately and successively operate the shifting-mechanisms to raise and lower the plows.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth,since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. I
