WILLIAM SIMMS, 0F ELGIN, ILLINOIS.
MULTIPLE TABLE.
Application filed February 23, 1916.
To all wlw/nt t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SIMMS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiple Tables, or' which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a table and has for its object the production of a table that can be placed in a certain way to be used as a single table.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device that can be used as two, three or more separate tables.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawingi Figure 1 is a view of the improved table with its sections taken apart.
Fig. 2 is avsection taken through the improved table when in a compact position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the leg of the upper section fitting within the hollow leg of the intermediate section.
This table consists of three parts, the base section 10, an intermediate section 11, and the upper section 12. The base section 10 is provided with a plurality of hollow legs 13 which are adapted to receive the hollow legs 14 of the intermediate section 11 which in turn are adapted to receive the solid legs 15 of the upper section 12. These sections 10, 11, and 12 are provided with tops 16, 17 and 18 respectively.
Hinges 19 are secured to the upper ends of the hollow legs 13 and 14: of the section 1() and 11 and are positioned flush with the tops 16 and 17 of these sections. These hinges 19 are also secured to gates 20 which are adapted to swing over and close the opening of the hollow legs 13 and 111 at the tops 16 and 17. The hollow legs 13 and 14 are provided with a notch 21 which is of substantially the same depth as the thickness of the gates 20 and is adapted to receive these gates 20 when they are in a closed position thus making a flat surface over the opening of these hollow legs With'the tops 16 and' 17.
.Formed on the under face of .the tQpS 17 Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 80,044.
and 18 of the sections 11 and 12 are pockets 22 adapted to receive the gates 2() when they are in an open position. These pockets 22 enable these sections to be placed flush upon each other as clearly shown in Fig. 3, as the pockets 22 are of substantially the same depth as the thickness of the gates 20.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when it is desired to use this table as one, it can be easily done by inserting the sections within one another as shown in Fig. 2. This makes a very compact and durable table and is free from any lateral movement oi the sections relative to one another. Then it is wished to use these tables separately it can be done by removing the sections from one another and merely swinging the gates over the openings caused in the tops of the respective sections by the hollow legs, and a smooth neat looking surface will be made. These tables can also be used fordisplay purposes, that is, setting one upon the other as the gates could be swung over the openings and the legs of the respective sections resting upon the top of the section beneath it.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departin from the principle, or sacrificing any o the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. A table comprising a plurality of sections, each section comprising a top portion and a plurality of legs, all of said sections with the exception of the uppermost one provided with hollow legs adapted to open through the top portions thereof so as to receive the legs of an adjacent section, gates secured to the upper end of said hollow legs and adapted to swing over the same for constituting a smooth surface on the top of each section, and pockets formed adjacent said legs for receiving the gates of their respective lower sections when the gates are in an open position.
2. A table comprising a plurality of sections, each section comprising a top portion and a plurality of legs, all of said legs with the exception of those on the top section being hollow and adapted to open through the top portion of their respective sections so as to receive the legs of an adjacent section, gates secured to the upper ends of said 5 away portions and said recesses being suhstantially the same depth as the depth of said gate and adapted to receive said gate when in a closed position whereby the same will be flush with the top portion when closed. 10
In testimony whereof I hereunto aHiX my signature.
WILLIAM SIMMS.
