To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Chestnut Ridge, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Life-Saving Boats, of which improvement the following is a specification-- My invention relates to improvements in life saving boats. A
The object of my invention is to produce a life saving boat applicable for use in emergency and one in which lives may be saved and at the same time, even though the passengers thereof are compelled to remain in the sea a considerable period of time, exposure to inclement weather and other hardships is prevented.
This object I accomplish by means of the device hereinafter more fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved life saving boat.

Referring to said drawings,.-1 indicates a metallic shell forming a large sized compartment, the under side of which may be provided with a keel 2 and may also be provided if desirable, with a rudder 3. lThe interior of said shell is capable of being ventilated and is provided with means to supply oxygen and with safety means for the admission of air during the time the vessel may be oating upon the sea. It is lighted electrically, batteries 4 being provided for this purpose and an incandescent lamp la being provided at the top of the shell. The metallic shell 1 is substantially cigar shaped, being pointed at the ends, and is heavier at the bottom than at the top so that it will float in the water in an upright position with the keel 2 at the bottom therecopies f this patent may be btainea for of. A floor 10 is arranged within the cigar shaped shell 1, being disposed at an intermediate point between the horizontal axis of the lshell and the bottomthereof, and continuous seats or benches 11 extend around the periphery ofthe floor, being built against the side walls of the'shell. A door 7 is provided in one side of the shell at a point just above the top of the seats 11 and inclined steps 12 lead from the door to the floor 10. Suitable packing 7a may be provided at the edges of the door opening for engagement with the door to insure a water tight closure so that there will be no leakage around-the edges of the door when the door is shut. The top of they shell is provided with a manhole 6, and a series of comparatively small windows 5 extend around the upper portion ofthe shell. These windows 5 are shown as circular in shape and,
as surrounded by guard rings 5a secured to the exterior. of the shell and projecting outwardly therefrom in such a manner as to protect the glass ofthe windows against breakage by contact with exterior objects.`
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The herein described life saving vessel, including an elongated cigar-shaped shell which is heavier at the bottom thereof than at the top, a keel extending longitudinally of the shell and projecting downwardly therefrom, a floor arranged within the shell at an intermediate point between the horizontal axis of the shell and the bottom thereof, benches extending around the periphery of the floor, a horizontal series of windows extending around the shell at an intermediate point between the horizontal axis of the shell and the top thereof, and a door in one side of the shell.
