'I'AE NITED IMPROVEMENT IN WEATHER-STRIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,703, dated January 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN BUSSMANN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weather- Strips; and do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in whichi Figure l is a front elevation of a door inclosed at its lower edge by means of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lower edge of said door; and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention belongs to a class of devices designed for inclosing-the lower edge and outer side of a door, so as to prevent the passage of rain and wind beneath the same; and it consists in the peculiar construction and operation of the device, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a strip of metal or other suitable material secured rigidly upon and horizontally across the outer face of a door, B, near the lower edge, and from thence projecting outward and down ward at an angle of about thirty degrees from a vertical line. Extending downward and forward from the under side of the strip A is a second strip, 0, having the transverse form shown in Fig. 3, with its lower edge about upon a line with the corresponding edge of the door, which strip is secured loosely upon the strip A by means of two or more screws, D, that pass upward through suitable longitudinal slots, 0, formed withinsaid strip 0, by which means the latter is permitted to move longitudinally upon or beneath said rigid strip A, and also to have a slight vertical motion of its outer end. Secured to or near the longitudinal center of the strip 0, at its under side, is one end of a spiral spring, E, the opposite end of which is fastenedto a lug, F, attached to the door, by which means said strip is drawn toward the hinged edge of the door and re tained in the position shown in Fig. 3, except when said door is closed. A second spring, G, attached at one end to or upon the door, has its free end bearing against the lower edge of the strip C so as to raise the same to its highest position, except when depressed by shutting said door. The device thus constructed and arranged has a length just equal to the distance between the vertical sides of the doorframe H, upon each of which sides is placed a stop, I, which corresponds in shape to the outer line of strips A and 0 when the latter is closed downward, and is so placed as to receive the ends of said strips when the door is closed and force the movable one to occupy the position named. If, now, the door he closed the inner end of the movable strip strikes against the corresponding jamb and is forced endwise upon said door until the opposite end ofsaid strip passes within its jamb,after which the stops I force the lower edge of said strip downward upon the sill K so as to entirely close the opening between the same and the door..
The advantage obtained by this construction of the weather-strip is that by means of its longitudinal movement upon the door it is en abled to accommodateitself to the varying positions of the same and its frame so as to fill the space between the jainbs more perfectly than would otherwise be possible; and while possessing this merit said device is neither more expensive norliable to derangement than those ordinarily used.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is The strips A and O, constructed as shown, and combined with each other, the springs E and Gfthe stops I, and the door B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
