In yillustrating our invention we have shown it in connection withcertain features of the iiist kStage of our above named box wrapping machine, suchyas the plungers '1 and 2, the table 3, the; side frames l, the base plate 5^, and the main driving shaftk 6, and other parts hereinafter mentioned. The blanks 7 are rcoated" with gum on one side by any suitable means, butk preferably by our improved blank gumming machine now pending, `Serial Number 30,471, filed May 25,1915.' This yoke-shaped bracket stands in substantially a vertical position on the machine, and it is provided atits lower or closed end with an extended vertical plate 11, that is bolted to one side of a slideway block V12, which is adjustably secured to a slotted plate 13, which is slidably mounted in the table 3. The lower end of theblock 8 swings on its pivotal pin 9 ydown between the arms of the yoke-Shaped bracket, and during its operative movement it is swung from a normal horizontal position into a vertical position.y
Vwiper vsupporting head .111 and its supporting bar 15. This supporting bar 15 of the wiper head is reciprocally mounted in a slideway 16, formed in the opposite side of the block 8 from its hub portion 8A.
The wiper head 14 projectsvbeyo'nd and over the slideway v16 of the block 8, and its under lside'is provided with a curved track CII portion or filet 17, that extends from the under side of the head to the adjacent side of the bar.
This curved track portion 17 of the head is engaged by a roller 18, that is rotatively mounted in the forked end of a vertically,
` loosely7 on aV square shaft 22. The pinion is provided with a hub portion 23 that is adapted to be rotatively j ournaled in a bearing 24: on the slideway block 12, there being one of these blocks on each side of the center of the machine on which the two extension end wrapping mechanisms are secured. The hub of the pinion extends through the bearing and a flange 25 `is formed on it,
which secures the pinion from lateral movement in its bearing. The square shaft extends across the center of the table and on opposite sides of it far enough to allow these pinions and their bearings to be moved toward or away from the center of the niachine to wrap the opposite ends of the different sized blanks on their respective ferent sized boxes.
One end of this square shaft extends to and through a bracket 26 that is secured to the adjacent side of the frame of the inachine, and is journaled in a hub 27 that is formed on the bracket, and on its outer end a pinion gear 23 is secured that meshes with a vertically reciprocating rack bar 29, which is slidably mounted in bearings 30 that are formed on a bracket 26, which is secured to the end of the table. The lower end of this rack bar 29 is connected to one end of a reach bar 31, the opposite end of which is connected to the upper end of a forked lever 32, the opposite forked end of which straddles the main shaft 6. This lever is provided with a roller 33 that engages a cam 3i on the shaft 6, which imparts a reciprocal movement to said rack bar, and rotates the pinion, which turns the square shaft and the pinions 21 that raise the rack bars 19.
The arrangement of the rack bar 29 with respect to the reach bar 31, as shown in Fig. 1, is for wrapping boxes of the greatest depth of which the machine is capable of wrapping. The rack bar 29 is provided at its lower portion with a slot 35 and a block` 3.6 is bolted to the upper end of the bar 31, and is provided with a recess iny which rests the lower end of the rack. bar 29, and the bar is held within the recess by a cap 37. A
pin 38 passes through the lower end of the` die rack bar 29 and bears against the lower end of the block 36, and an adjustable block 39 bears against the upper end of the block 36, and is secured to the rack bar 29 by a bolt 40` which passes through the slot 35. Thus arranged, the cam fork 32, the reach bar 31 and the rack bar 29 move in unison, as will be understood, and with these parts thus arranged, as shown by Fig. 1, the end wipers are raised high enough to accomplish the end wiping of boxes of the greatest depth for which the machine is set. In wrapping boxes of less depth, however, the rack bar must have a shorter stroke in order to diminish the rotative travel of the gear wheels 21, and to accomplish this, the adjustable block 39 is moved up a suitable distance above the block 36, and is firmly clamped to the rack bar by its bolt 40. Thus the movement of the cam 34: will raise the reach bar 31 a short distance before the block 36 engages tlie block 39, after which the rack bar and reach bar move up in unison.
Assuming that the reciprocal stroke of the bar has been properly adjusted to lit the height of the ends of' the box between the extension edge and the end wiimrs, then it rotates the pinion 28 and the cross bar and its pinions 21 which reciprocate the rack bars 19 of the opposite box end wipers, and they cause each of these extension edge :ind end wrappers to act as follows:
The lower plunger block is of a size to extend to the outer edges of the side and end edges of the extension bottom of the box. The hinged supporting block 3 is provided with a blank pressing bla de C1 that is secured toit and that extends across its top and equally beyond its opposite sides, and is of. the full width of the extension edge of the end of the box, and the head of the wiper is provided with a stepped portion 42, on which a wiper block -13 is clamped by a clamping plate 14, that is secured. to

rfhis wiper block has its upper edge rounded backward from its outside face, which with its rounded edge is covered with a pad of felt or other suitable soft cushioning material.
The end wipers are of the full width of the end of the box above its extension edge.
The bar 15 of the wiper supporting head is secured in its initial wiper starting position relative to the extension edge of thc presser blade by a spring 46 that is secured to the back of the block 8 at one end, and extends beyond its lower end and lits with a resilient bearing pressure into a recess 47 that is formed in the bar 15. Consequently when the wiper head is down in the slideway of the block and resting on top of the block, it and its bar are secured by this spring with -a springtension to the block, and when in this position the wipers are readyto engage the opposite ends of the box the instant thek extension edge blank turning and presser' blades act operatively on thefend flapsy of the blanks, and the exten? sion end edges of the box, ascwill be presently described, j l
The opposite face of the wiper head bar 15 from the spring receiving groove 47 is provided with a projecting lug 48, andthe toothed rack bar is provided with arecess 49 in its edge that is arranged in thek path of and to receive the lug V48 at a predetermined point in its upward movement, which point is reached vin the upward movement of the rack bar the instant the extension edge presserblades have completed their blank turning movement over the edge and top side of the extension edge of the box.
At the instant the blades have been tilted down hard against the upper surface of the extension' edge and the end wipers have been movedy straight against the end surfaces of the box, a projection on a cam 50 permits the sliding plates 15, withthe wiper supporting slideway blocks 12, to be moved slightly inwardly, so that the wipers will be pressed rmly` against the vertical end surfaces of the box by springs 51. This inward movement of the end wipers against the ends of the box is accomplished in the following manner: y
Each of the slide plates 13 has a depending bifurcated lug 52 at its outer end, to which one end'of a link' 53 isy pivotally secured, and the other ends of these links are connected to levers 54 and 55 respectively, which are rigidly secured upon shafts 56 and V57 respectively, which are mounted in the sides of the table. The lever 54Kis a bell crankform of lever, and its other member is connected to the upper end of a rod 58, the lower end of which is secured to an eye bolt 59, which is secured in the end of oney arm 60, lof a doublearmed lever, the other arm 61 of which carries a roller 62, which is adapted to be engaged by a cam on'the peripheral edge yof the cam disk 50. The
double armed lever is mounted on a stub shaft, which projects from a bracket 63,r that forms an integral part of the cap kof the adjacent bearing standard `64, which forms one of the supports forthe main driving shaft 6. The pins which secure the links 58 to the lugs 52, extend beyond one side of each lug, as shownat 65, ,/(Fig. 4) and to each of these pins is connected one end of acoil spring 51,
the other ends of which are connected to pinsL 66, which `are secured to thetable` 3. The outerends ofthe shafts 56 and 57 carry re'- spectively levers 67 and 68, the-lever`67 ex' projection ofthe cam diskO, the lever arms the springs 51 upon the lugs 52 causes the slide plates 13, which carry the end wiper mechanism, to move inward so thatv the end wiperswillrengage the folded end flaps' of the blank and press them against the ends of the box under pressure represented by the tensionof the springs 51, and this pressure is exerted whilethe wipers are moved upward against the ends of the box, so asto firmly press the gummed end flaps against the ends of the box. The movement of the bell crank 54 isimparted to the lever 55 through the medium of the connecting rod 69, which permits both springs 51 to act in unison, and which causes the levers 54Y and `wrapping mechanism is as follows:
When the verticalrack barsf19 are moved vertically upward by the rotative movement of the square shaft and the pinions 21, its roller 18, which normally bears up under. and against the curved'track member 17 of the head and its bar, pushes that member upwardly and swings them at the opposite ends of thebox supportingy plungers up over their pivotal pins 9, which movement causes the blades 41 to engage the kend flapsof the blanks and carrythem over kthe extended edges of the ends of the box and carry them down against the upper surface of theV ex tension edges of thev ends of the box and press them down tight up to and against the side corners of the extension edges,y as these presser blades are made wide enough and are arranged to fit close' and to press the blank against and glue them into the corners and against the adjacent ends of the box.k
At the same time these extension edge wrapping blades swing over onto the top edges of the extension edge of the box, the blank endiaps and the box end wipers 43 are also swung up over and they also engage end flaps of the blank and carry it up against the ends of the box, but they do'not the blades from pressing the end flaps of the press hard enough at this time to prevent blank down tightly against the top of the extension edge of the box. These presser blades are actuated bythe vertical rack bars to press down hard against the top surfaces of the extension edges, and this pressure forces them .firmly against the low-er plunger, upon which the extension edges of the bex rest. Consequently the gummed blank is pressed and glued down tightly and smoothly against the top and corner surfaces of the ends of the box. When the rollers 18 of the vertical rack bars have swung the presser blades over and down firmly against the top surface of the extension edges of the ends of the box they also swing the outer ends of the blade supporting block down between the ends of the yokes to which they are pivotally secured, and against the sides of their respective rack bars, and the projecting lugs 48 of the bar extensions of the wiper supporting heads move into the recesses 49 of these rack bars, these several movements being formed quickly and automatically as the rack bars move continuously upwardly, and they do not stop when the lugs swing into the recess 49 of the rack bars as the pinions 21 and shaft 22 are rotating continuously, and consequently the instant the presser blades have made their wrapping and pressing movement against the top of the extension edges, the next instant the rack bars are continuing their upward movement, and they lift the bars 15 up with them, and their rollers 18 engage and bear against the outward curve track of the head portions, the springs 51 holding the wipers firmly against the ends of the blank which are thus pressed and glued against the ends of the box, and at the same time the rack bars which are still moving upward, lift the wiper bars and their heads and the wipers 43 with them and press the end fiaps of the blank, as they move up the ends of the box, up against and glue them to the ends of the box. The rack bars then reverse their movement and move the wipers down, the said wipers having lirst been moved slightly away from the ends of the box by the action of the cam 50. rllhe wipers descend until the head 14 engages the swinging block 8, and instantly the lugs 48 on the bars 15 are disconnected from the .notches 49 of the rack bars, and as the rack bars continue their downward movement, the wiper supports swing by gravityv to a horizontal position, and complete the wrapping of the extension edges of the ends and also the ends of the box above its extension edge. The ends of the side flaps and also the end flaps of the blanks are left projecting far enough above the top ends of the box to allow them to be turned in by a special turn-in mechanism, which we do notfillustrate, but which is fully illustrated and described in our pending application, Serial Number 59,860, filed November 5,1915, for an automatically operating multiple stage treatment box wrapping machine.
When it is desired to wrap the ends of straight sided non-extension edge boxes with blanks by either the tight or loose wrap kind of box wrapping, the presser blades supporting blocks and the wiper heads and bars are removed with their yoke-shaped brackets from the machine. The rollers are also rcmoved from the ends of the rack bars 19, and suitable wiper head block and the wipers are secured to them by pinning them between and to the yoke ends of the rack bars.
Our invention provides a simple and positively operating mechanism for wrapping the ends of bottom extension edged boxes that act quickly and glues the end fiaps of the blank neatly over the corner end iiaps of the blanks that were previously wrapped around the side corners of the box and glued to the ends of the box by the corner wipers; and while we have illustrated and described the preferred construction and arrangement of our extension edge blank wrapping mechanism for the sides and especially for the opposite ends of extension edge boxes, we do not wish to be limited to the construction and arrangement shown, as many changes might be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A mechanism for wrapping a gummed blank around an extension edge box, comprising a blank presser blade, a blank wiper movable with said blade into blank wiping relation to said box and then movable independent of said blade, and means for operating said blade and wiper to wrap the blank first around said exte-nsion edge and then against the adjacent surface of said box.
2. In an extension edge box and blank wrapping mechanism, the combination of a support for the box and its extension edge, the tilting presser blade carrying block, the wiper head and wiper slidably mounted therein, and means including a reciprocating rack bar for moving said presser blades and wipers to wrap the blank on the extension edge and the adjacent surface of the box.
3. A box bottom extension edge and gummed blank wrapping mechanism` comprising a support for the box and its extension edge, a blade carrying block pivotally supported to swing' a predetermined distance over and into the extension edge of the box, a wiper supporting head Vreciprocally mounted in said block, a reciprocating rack bary arranged to engage and tilt said block so that its blade and said wiper fold said blank over and against the extension edge of said box and against its adjacent surface above said extension edge, and means `whereby said rack bar holds said blade and blank down against the top sur face of said extension edge and 'at the same timemoves saidr surface wiper upwardly and wraps 'and glues the blanky against the surface of vsaid box above its extension edge to the top edge of saidbox, and means for reciprocating said rack bar. v v,
4. A mechanism for wrappingthe extensionedge boxes with gummed blanks', comprising a yoke-shaped bracket, a presser blade'supporting block pivotally mounted to swing in said bracket, and means including a cam`actuated reciprocating rack bar for moving saidk blockto kcause its blade to fold said blank over and against the top` surface of the extension'edge o-f 'saidbox 5. A mechanism for wrapping the extension edge boxes with/gummedV blanks, comprising a yoke-shaped'bracket, Va presser blade supporting block pivotally mounted to swing in said bracket, a box end wiper device reciprocall mounted in said block and arranged to old the blank against the end of the box, and means including a cam actuated reciprocating rack bar for moving said block to cause its blade to fold said blank over and against theltop surface of the extension edge of said box.
6. `A mechanism for wrapping theextension edge boxes with gummed blanks, vcomprising a yoke-shapped bracket, a presser blade supporting block pivotally mounted to swing in said bracket, a box end wiper de- 'vice reciprocally mounted in said block and arranged to fold thek blank lagainst the end of the box, means including a cam actuated reciprocating rack bar for moving said block to cause its blade to fold said blank over and against the top surface of the extension edge of said box, a recessin said rack bar, a lug onv said end wiper device arranged to register in said rack bars recess after said blades have wrapped and glued said blank down against said extension edge, and arranged then to move said box end wiper upward independent of said blade and wrappingly glue said blank to the-endsy of said box.
7. In an extensionV edge box lwrapping machine, the combination with'the wipers that wrap the blanks to the surfaces of boxes above their extension edge portions, of the box extension edge wrapping mechanism comprising means including the tilting blades provided with a resilient cushioning relief mechanism for pressing aH blank against the top surface 0f they extension edge o a box.
8. In an extension edge box wrapping machine, the combination with the upper surface wipers of the box, of the box extension edgewrapping mechanism comprising means including the tilting blades provided with operativemechanism for pressing a blank againstthe top surface of the extension edge of a box rst, and the surface wipers arranged to then wrap Ythe blanks against the surfaces of the box, vand means including cam actuated mechanism for operating said bladesy to and from said box with a resilient yielding blank and box wrapping pressure on said boxs extension edge.
9. An extension edge box and gummed blank wrapping mechanism, comprising an extension edge presser blade and a box'surface wiper connected together by a resiliently separating connection arranged to move together to engage and wrap the opposite flaps of said gummed blank` simultaneously against the top surface of the extensionedge of the blade and against its opposite surfaces.
10'. An extension edge box and gummed blank wrapping mechanism, comprising an extension edge presser blade and a box surface wiper connected together by a resiliently separating connection arranged to move together to engage and wrap the opposite flaps of said gummed blank simultaneously against the top surface of the extension edge of the blade and against its opposite surfaces, said blades being arranged to wrap the flaps of the blank down against the top surface of the box extension edge and to stop there, means for moving said wipers to break its connecting resilient connection with said blades and for moving said-wipers upwardly away from the downwardly pressing presser blades and wrappingly glue the ends of the blanks to the surfaces of the box above said blades, means for slightly backing offI said surface wipers and returning them to the blades ,and resiliently connecting them to said way blocks in swinging engagement with said frames, having presser blades on their outer ends, bars slidably mounted in the slideway blocks having wipers thereon which normally rest upon said presser blades, resilient means for normally locking saidbars and said slideway blocks together, reciprocating means for swingingy said slideway blocks to a horizontal position, whereby said presser blades overlap the op osite ends of said plunger, means whereby t e reciprocatin means are locked to the wiper carrying ars when the said bars assume vertical positions, whereby the said bars with their wipers are moved upward and then back to their normal positions when the slideway blocky and parts carried thereby kswing by gravity to horizontal positions,
and means for moving said slidable supports inward and then outward at predetermined periods.

In a device of the character described, a support, a normally horizontal block in swinfrin en agement with said sua Jort an C g b 7 extensive bottom presser blade on the outer end of said block, a bar slidably mounted in said block having an end `wiper thereon which normally rests on said presser blade, a reciprocating bar for engaging and swinging said block to a vertical position, means for locking said wiper carrying bar to said reciprocating bar when the wiper bar assumes a vertical position, whereby the said wiper bar is moved upward by the further movement or' the reciprocating bar, and then downward until the end wiper rests upon the extension bottom presser blade when a further downward movement of the recip- 20 wiper bar to the swinging block, and resil-V 25 ient means for moving the said support in and out at predetermined periods.
