MEASURING DEVICE.
State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Measuring Devices, of -which the following is a specification.
This'invention contemplates an improved n measuring device and has as its primary object to provide a construction including a hopper adapted for attachment to a bin but which may, if desired, be used as an independent element in the capacity of a funnel and wherein the said hopper or funnel will be provided with a valve operable by a measuring cup adapted to be removably' fitted into the hopper or funnel to engage the valve. The invention has as a further object to provide a structure wherein the valve will be formed with lugs for positively limiting the valve in its movement to open and closed positions.
And a still further object-of the invention is to provide. a construction wherein the measuring cup will be uninterrupted at its upper margin so'that the said cup may be filled to its capacityand wherein the cup will be provided with lugs adapted to coact. with the lugs of the valve for, operating the valve. 9
Other and incidental objects will appear as the description I proceeds and in the drawings wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,

In carrying out my invention, I employ a frustro conical hopper 10 which is provided with, an annular spout 11 having a p bayonet slot 12 formed therein. Arranged within the hopper adjacent its smaller end,

is a partition or annular wall 13 Which is provided upon opposite sides of its center with; diametrically arranged openings 14. The hopper, the spout 11, together with the adaJcent partition wall 13 may, if desired, all be formed of sheet metal although any other suitable material may be employed and upon an inspection of Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will be observed that the Wall 13 .is not only connected at its periphery to the hopper but is arranged to seat upon the upper edge of the spout 11 to be braced and supported thereby.
Rotatably mounted upon the upper face of the partition wall 13 is a valve 15. This valve is in the nature of a metal disk although the valve may be constructed of any suitable material, and is centrally pivoted to the partition wall 13, being connected to said Wall by a rivet 16 or other suitable fastening device and rotatable upon the said wall. Formed in the valve 15 upon opposite sidesof the center thereof are diametrically arranged openings 17 adapted to register with the openings 14 in the wall 13, the valve, of course, being movable to close the openings in the said wall. Depending from the valve 15 upon opposite sides of the cen- 'ter thereof are diametrically arranged stop lugs 18 which are preferably integral with the said valve andare reversely presented.

Associated with the hopper, is a measur ing cup 19. This cup may also, if desired, be constructed of sheet metal c although any other suitable material may be employed and is adapted to be removably fitted into the spent 11 in the mannen illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Formed on the cup upon one side thereof is a stoplug 20 adapted to be freely received within the slot 12.
At its open end, the cup isprovided with oppositely disposed ears or lugs 21 secured to the inner face of the wall of the cup ad'- jacent' its outer margin and upon opposite sides thereof,'the said lugs projecting inwardly toward the axis'of the cup and having their outer faces flush withiits upper edge. Formed in,the ears 21, are diametri-.
cally arranged radial slots 22, adapted to detachably engage the stop lugs 18 of the valve 15.
Normally, the valve 15 will rest upon the wall 13 of the hopper in position, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, to close the openings 14 in the said wall with the stop lugs 18 engaging one corresponding pair of side edges of the said openings. The cup 19 may then be fitted in the spout 11 with the lug 20 of the said cup engaging in the slot 12 when the cup may be moved toward the wall 13 of the hopper to engage the lugs 21 of the cup with the lugs 18 of the valve 15, the lugs 18 being received within the slots 22 of the said first mentionedlugs. The cup 19 may then be turned in one direction within the spout 11 to rotate the valve 15 to open position with the lugs 18 of the said valve engaging the pair of side edges. of the opening 14 opposite to said first mentioned pair and with the openings 17 of the valve registering with the said first mentioned openings- The material to be measured will then flow through the hopper into the cup when the cup will become entirely filled. The cup may then be rotated in the opposite direction to again move the valve 15 to closed position and since the outer faces of the lugs 18 are flush with the adjacent side edges of the openings 17 in the valve, the valve may be shifted to a position to entirely close said openings. It will therefore be seen that the stop lugs 18 serve a dual function in that they are not only adapted to positively limit the valve in its movement to open and closed positions respectively but are also adapted for engagement by the ears of the cup so that the valve may be rotated. It will be noted that the valve 15 is arranged to rest upon the parture in any instance where fine materials are to be measured. The, device may, of course, be constructed any desired size and may be used in any adaptation where found applicable. In this connection, it is to be pointed out that the hopper 10 may be secured to the bottom of a bin to surround an opening therein so that the contents of the bin may run into the hopper. The cup 19 may then be employed to measure materials directly from the bin. For connecting the hopper with the bin, any suitable type of fastening device may be employed; On the other hand, the hopper can be used as an inde pendent element in the capacity of an ordi-- nary funnel.
Having thus described my inventi0n,what I claim and desireto secure by Letters Pat;-- cut:
1. A device of the character described including a hopper provided with a partition wall having an opening therein, a valve carried by said wall and provided with an opening, the valve being movable to one position to close the openingin the partition wall and to another position with the said openings registering, means carried by the valve for limiting the valve in its move-- ment in opposite directions, and a vessel arranged for engagement with said means for operating the valve.
2. A device of the character" described including a hopper having a partition wall provided with an opening, a valve carried by said wall and provided with an opening, the valve being movable to one position to close the opening in said wall and to another position with the said openings registering, a lug depending from the valve to project through the opening in said wall' for engagement with opposite edges thereof for limiting the valve in its movement in opposite directions, and a vessel arranged for engagement with said lug for operating the valv v 3. A device of the character described including a hopper provided with a wall having an opening therein, a shiftably mount- 10:} ed valve associated with said wall and provided with an opening, the valve being movable to one position'to (31386 the opening in the wall and to another position with the said openings in alinement, means carried by the valve and projecting through the opening in said wall for engagement with opposite edges thereof to limit the valve in its movement in opposite directions, and a vessel adapted for detachable connection to the hopper to engage said means for operating the valve. v
4. A device of the character described including a hopper having a partition wall and provided with an opening, a valve carried by said partition wall and provided with an opening, the valve being movable to one position to close the opening in said wall and to another position with the said openings registering, alug formed on the valve todepend therefrom at one edge of the opening in the valve with the said lug disposed for engagement with opposite edges of the openingin said-partition wall for limiting the valve in its movement in opposite directions, a vessel, anda slotted earcarried by the vessel with the said slot receiving the said lug and with the cup operable for shifting the valve.
5. A device of the character described including a hopper provided with a partition wall having an opening therein, a valve carried by said wall and provided with an opening, the valve being movable to one position to close the opening in the partition wall and to another position with the said openings registering, means carried by the valve for limiting the valve in its movement in opposite directions, a spout car- 10 ried by the hopper and provided with a tur bayonet slot, a vessel arranged for engagement with said means with the vessel operable within the spout for shifting the valve,
and a lug carried by the vessel for engagement within said slot for locking the vessel 15 upon the spout upon the movement of the valve toopen posltion.
