NITED IMPROVEMENT IN JOURNAL-BOXES FOR LUBRICATING AXLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,662, dated January 9,1872.
Specification describing an Improvement in Lubricators, invented by JACOB ScHINNEL- LER, of Temperanceville, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania.
The nature of my invention consists in a detachable lubricating and an oil chamber, placed within a case surrounding the axis of a Wheel or shaft, the lubricating-chamber being provided with an elastic packing and the oil-chamber with splash-plates, all constructed and arranged as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe more fully its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of my specification, Figure 1 is a top view of the casing which surrounds the axis of a wheel. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same at line y of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of the detachable lubricating-chamber. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the same at line 31 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a top View of the packing or oil-conductor. Fig. 6 is a transverse section. of the packing or oil-conductor.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the outside casing, provided with a door, E, on the inner surface of. which are wedgedshaped projections D. At the inner end of the outside casing is a recess for receiving gum or leather packing rings K, which fit closely around the axle B. On the upper side of the axle is the ordinary metal bearing 0. B represents the lubricating-chamber, the side walls of which are provided with a large number of perforations, h, and with a detached bottom, m, which rests upon springs t.
The lubricating-chamber is placed within an oil-chamber, which is provided with splash-plates 0. Between the side walls of the lubricating-chamber B is placed, on the bottom end, the packing or lubricatin g piece 0, which is formed of flannel or other cloth wrapped around the wooden core w. The springs I: and bottom m hold the upper edge of the lubricating-piece 0 against the under side of the axle B, and thereby keep it perfectly lubricated.
The lubricating-oil is placed in the oil-chamberf, and flows, through the openings h, into the lubricating-chamber, and is conducted up to the axle B through the medium of the lubricating piece 0. The oil is prevented from splashing out of the oil-chamber f through the medium of the splash-plates e. The wedgedshaped pieces D are used for the purpose of holding the oil-chamber firmly back against the inner side of the back end of the outside case A.
Having thus described my improvement in lubricators, what I claim as of my invention 1s- 1. A detached lubricating-oil chamber, having splash-plates e, and placed within a case surrounding the axle of a wheel or a shaft, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. Thecase A, lubricatingoil chambers B and f, combined with the elastic packing O and inclined projections D on the door E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
- JACOB SOHINNELLER.
