To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lViIJLARn IRVING TWOMBLY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of li'lanhattan, in the city county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hoods for Engines of Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is a' specification.
This invention relates to motor vehicles,

It is the object of the present invention to overcome the above. disadvantages and to provide a hood whereby access can not only be had to the sides of the engine but also to the front thereof and any mechanism which may be located there, and to provide a hood which is simple and compact in construction readily manipulable to get access toall parts of the engine and its associated mechanism, and which not only enhances the appearance of the hood itself but the appearance of the vehicle in general.
With this object in view I provide a series of hinged sections to provide a structure substantially semi-cylindrical in shape to extend over the top of the engine with one end supported upon a bowed frame adjacent the dashboard and the forward end supported upon a. similar bowed frame. The bowed frames are supported upon a substantially rectangular[supporting base the side members of which extend beyond said semi-cylindrical hood and are tapered or curved to a common central point, a pair of substantially triangular curved perforated or reticulated hood sections being hinged at one edge to the frame and constituting the front of the hood to inclose the front of the hood.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, I have shown only so much of the frame (designated in a general way by F) of a motor vehicle as is essential to an understanding of the invention, the said frame being supported at its forward end by the forward'wheel axle A, below said axle and supporting a motor or engine E. Fixed to said frame is a hood supporting frame or base 5, stantially rectangular in shape with the forward ends 6, 6 of the side members converging toward each other to a common point, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. In the present instance these converging members are fixed to the side members of the base 5 by riveting or the like, although it will be obvious thatthey may constitute an integral part thereof. A bowed frame 7 is connected to said base adjacent the dashboard 8 of the vehicle, and a bowed frame 9 is connected to the forward end of the frame 5, the radius of the arc of this latter bowed member being less than that of the bowedmember 7 for a purpose to be hereinafter vdescribed.
Supported by said bowed members 7, 9, is a hood 10 to extend over and inclose the engine E and its associated mechanism the said hoodconsisting of hinged sections so that the hood may be lifted or folded upon itself to readily expose or get access to either or both sides of the engine. The hood extends forwardly from and with one end ad jacentto the dashboard 8, the said dashboard serving to close the inner end of the In the present instance, latches 19 pivotally carried by the vehicle frame F cooperate with lugs on the hood to maintain the hood in position. In the present instance the hood is of a shape substantially semi-cylindrical in cross section and slightly tapering from the end adjacent the dashboard to the forward end thereby enhancingthe appearance thereof. In the drawing the hood is illustrated as adapted to a vehicle having a low center of gravity and for this purpose the sides of the hood extend below its supporting frame 5 to a point adjacent the vehicle frame F, thereby entirely inclosing and protecting the sides of the engine and its associated mechanism.
As already stated the forward end of the hood is provided with releasable means whereby access may be readily had to the front of the engine and any mechanism which may be located there. In the present instance, the engine frame has a shelf projecting forwardly therefromand beyond the forward end of the hood 10 to support a magneto M directly connected to the power shaft of the engine, but as this is not an essential feature of the invention a detailed description thereof is not deemed necessary.
To close the forward end of the hood and cover the magneto, I provide a pair of foldable triangular shaped perforated or reticulated sections 11, 11, hinged at one edge, in the present instance the lower edge as at 12, 12, to the converging members 6, 6, so as to permit of the swinging of said sections away from the front of the hood, as clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, cables or chains 13 connected at one end to the bowed frame 9 and at the other end to a section 11, preventing the sections from dropping too far down. These sections are curved so that in their operative or closed position one edge will have a mating connection with the end of the hood, as at 14, and the other edges will converge toward each other and have a mating and overlapping connection, as at 15, Fig. 1, said latter edges being reinforced to make a rigid structure. It will thus be noted that the sections form a curved or rounded nose for the hood not only enhancing the appearance of the hood and the vehicle in general but providing an enlarged air chamber in which a fan may be located. Fixed to the members 6, 6 below the hinged edges of the sections 11, are sections 18, said sections extending down to a line parallel with the bottom of the hood 10, as clearly shown in Fig. .1.. I
To retain the forward hood sections 11 in closed position, each section has a laterally projecting lug 20 adjacent its uppermost corner adapted to engage in an opening 21 in a latch 22, said latch being substantially of U-shape constructed of resilient metal and secured at one end to the bowed member 9,
as at 23, the other end having a finger-piece 24 to readily release the hood sections 11. The latch 22 not only retains the hood sections closed but also firmly draws them to gether and thereby prevents chattering thereof when the vehicle is in operation.
From the foregoing description it will be obvious that I have provided a hood for the engine of a motor vehicle whereby access may be readily had to the front of the engine and its associated mechanism, and also whereby the appearance of the hood and the vehicle in general is greatly enhanced.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of my invention.
Iaving thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a motor vehicle, the combination of a hood to project forward from the dashboard consisting of longitudinally foldable sections, one end of which hood lies adjacent the dashboard, and foldable sections to close the other end of said hood, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a motor vehicle, the combination of a hood consisting of longitudinally hinged sections, one end of which hood lies adjacent the dashboard of the vehicle, and a pair of hinged sections for the front end of said hood, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a motor vehicle, a hood for the engine projecting forward from and with one end adjacent to the dashboard, and releasable sections to close the forward end of said hood, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 7
4. In a motor vehicle, a hood for the engine substantially semi-cylindrical in cross section projecting forward from and with one end adjacent to the dashboard, and a pair of hinged sections to close the forward end of the hood.
5. In a motor vehicle, a hood for the en gine substantially semi-cylindrical in cross section projecting forward from and with one end adjacent to the dashboard; and releasable sections closing the forward end of said hood, comprising a pair of perforated hinged sections having a mating connection with the hood and one section having a portion mating with the other section and both converging to a common central point.

8. In a motor vehicle, a hood for the engine substantially semi-cylindrical in cross section projecting forward from and with one end adjacent to the dashboard and consisting of longitudinally hinged sections, and a pair of triangular shaped perforated sections closing the front of the hood hinged at their lower edges with one edge of each section adapted to have a mating connection with the forward end of the hood when in operative position and the other edges adapted to converge to a central line and mate with each other.
9. In a motor vehicle, a hood for the engine substantially semi cylindrical in cross section projecting forward from and with one end adjacent to the dashboard and consisting of longitudinally hinged sections, a pair of triangular shaped perforated sec tions closing the front of the hood hinged at their lower edges with one edge of each section adapted to have a mating connection with the forward end of the hood when in operative position and the other edges adapted to converge to a central line and mate with each other, a lug projecting laterally from each of said sections, and a resilient latch to engage over said lugs to maintain the sections in closed position.
10. In a motor vehicle, an engine in the forward end thereof, a hood extending from one side over the engine to the other side and having a closed connection at the rear with other portions of the vehicle, parts as sociated with said engine adjacent the forward end requiring accessibility, a closure for the forward end of the hood adapted to be opened without removing the hood proper, for the purpose of gaining access through the front of the hood to the forward end of the engine.
11. In a motor vehicle, an engine near the forward end thereof, a hood substantially covering said engine and having means for ready detachability from the vehicle with one end of said hood forming a closed connection with the adjacent portions of the vehicle, a closure for the opposite end of said hood, said closure adapted to be opened without disturbing said hood.
12. In a motor vehicle, a hood extending from one side to the other of said vehicle with means for ready detachability and having one end adapted to form a closure with a permanent portion of said vehicle, a second ary hood at the other end of said hood proper and means for readily opening and readily attaching said secondary hood to close the adjacent end of the hood proper.
13. In a motor vehicle, an engine, a hood for said engine, and an articulated section at one end of said hood whereby the same may be displaced to afiord access to the adjacent end of the engine and associated parts.

In a motor vehicle, an engine, a dash behind said engine and a hood contiguous with said dash and extending over said on gine, associated parts of said engine projecting forward of the engine and a secondary hood in front of the main hood and over the supplementary parts of said engine, said secondary hood being adapted to swing out of position but afford access to the supplementary parts of the engine.
15. In a motor vehicle, an engine in front thereof,- a dash behind the engine, a hood extending from side to side over said engine and abutting the forward side of said dash, and having an open forward end, a secondary closure for the forward end of said hood adapted to be articulated to permit access through the entire forward end of said hood.
