Be it known that l. LAwincNeE B. JENCKES, a citizen ofthe United States, rcsiding at lloi'cestei', in thecoiinty 'of forcester and State of Massachusetts, have invent- 'is drlven through frictional connections thereby permitting tlie'take-up roll to advance a definite amount at each beat of the lay While the cloth roll advances merel-y enough to wind up the cloth delivered by the take-up roll, the driving connections slipping` ahead during the remainder of the take-up motion. The necessary angular ad- Vance of the cloth roll naturally decreases as the diameter of the. roll of cloth carried thereby increases.
When for any reason it becomes necessary to let back the'cloth at the take-up roll, the cloth roll as commonly driven will be turned backward through a substantial angle. Such movement, on account of large diarneter `of the roll of cloth, frequently lets back several times as much cloth from the cloth roll as is required to. produce the nec "essaryslacknes's fatwtht"take-up roll, thus r roll.
leaving an objectionable amount of slack cloth between the take-uprroll and the cloth It is the object of my invention to pro- 'vide 4a ytake-up mechanism in which, upon backward movement of the take-up roll, the cloth roll will let back only the amount of cloth desired at the take-up roll, regardless of the diameter of the roll of cloth.
In' .the preferred form of my invention this result is obtained by the provision of a ratchet mechanism for driving the cloth roll,
through which mechanisni the roll is driven forward. while the ratchet.mechanism has 11o backward driving engagement.
