To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDY I-Lwnrnnna subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Senecaville, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Joints, of which the following is a specificatron.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rail joints.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a joining means for the adjacent ends of railway rails whereby the rails are operatively positioned in longitudinal alinement without the employment of bolts, screws or the usual fish plates.
A further object of the device is the provision of a rail joint comprising complelnentally formed rail ends adapted for inter-fitting engagement whereby removable locking slides are readily positionable for maintaining the rails in their operative relation.
A still further object is the provision of a rail joint that is easy and inexpensive to manufacture, the same consisting primarily of complementally formed opposite end portions upon each rail, locking slides being the only additional members required besides the rail themselves.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation of the adjacent ends of two rails secured together in the present manner.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, portions being shown in section upon the line III1 of Fig. 1.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are vertical transverse sectional views taken respectively, upon lines IIIIII, IV-IV and VV of Fig. 1.

Fig. 7 is a similar view of the opposite end of the rail.
The invention is herein illustrated in connection with the end portions of two rails 10 and 11, the adjacent ends 12 and 13 re spectively, of the said rails being complementally formed whereby their interfitting engagement is accomplished as best illustrated in Fig. 1. It will be noted that each rail of the track has its opposite ends differ- Specification of Letters Patent.

ently formed, one end of each rail being provided in the form shown in Fig. 7 and the other of the form shown in Fig. 6.
The form of rail end 13 has the tread 11 and the web 15 partially broken away fornr ing a cut-away portion 16 while the base flanges 17 are provided with opposite slots 18, the web 15 having a dovc-tailed groove 19 in its lower edge 20 communicating with the slots 18.
Supporting ledges 21 are arranged upon the ends of the flanges 17 on the upper faces thereof spaced from the web 15 and providing recesses 22 between the said ledges and web. A dove-tail form of perforation 23 is provided through the end of the web 15 in alinement between similarly shaped downwardly flaring receiving grooves 2 1 longitudinally arranged in the upper sides of the ledges 21.
The rail end 12 has the end portion 24: of its web 25 thickened for providing a longitudinal socket 26 therein adapted to receive the free end portion of the web 15 of the adjacent rail end 13, at which time the tread 27 of the end 12 is arranged in alinement with the tread 1d of the rail 11. The base flanges 28 of the end 12 have depending terminal lugs 29 adapted for receptionwithin the aforementioned slots 18, upwardly flaring grooves 30 being arranged longitudinally of the lugs 29 in alinement with the aforementioned groove 19 of the rail end 13. When the rail ends are so engagingly positioned, a locking slide is frictionally forced through the alining grooves 30 and 19 for retaining the lugs 29 within the slots 18 and the rails in their secured relations.
The base flanges 28 are provided withinterrupted portions 32 adapted to fit over and receive the ledges 21 therein while the spaced sides 33 of the web 2& seat within the re cesses 22 of the rail end 13. Openings 3 1 are provided through the sides of the web 24 identical in form to the perforation 23, the grooves 2-1, openings 3% and perforation 23 all being in alinement when the rail ends are in operative engagement, whereby a locking slide 35 is readily positionabletherethrough assisting the slide 31 in looking the rails together.
It will be noted that the opposite rail ends 12 and 13 are substantially complementally formed, the same readily being interengaged and disconnected at will while the slides 31 and are the only additional elements required being frictionally positionable in their locking arrangement as heretofore described. with the treads 14: and 27 of the adjacent rails in alineinent with each other, these slides being trapezoidal in cross-section and arranged with their opposite sides uppermost when lockingly positioned.
What I claim as new is 1. A rail joint comprising substantially complelnentally formed rail ends, one of said ends having an upper cutaway tread and web portion and opposite slots in the base flanges thereof, the other rail end having a longitudinal recess in the web thereof adapted for receiving the web portion of the adjacent rail, depending lugs upon the secondnained rail end adjacent said socket adapted for fitting within the said slots.
2. A rail joint comprising the end of a rail having the tread and web broken away and opposite slots in the base flanges thereof with a dove-tailed groove in the web between the said slots, terminal ledges upon the said base flanges having downwardly flaring grooves in their upper faces and spaced from the adjacent web, the said web having a perforation therethrough in alinement with the said grooves, and a complementally formed rail end adapted for interfitting within the said cut-away portion and slots and between the said ledges and web, and locking slides for the said rail ends arranged through the said grooves and perforations.
3. A rail joint comprising a rail end having its web portion provided with a longitudinal socket and opposite interrupted portions in the base flanges thereof, and alining openings through the said web adj acent the said interrupted portions, depending terminal lugs upon the base flanges having flared seating grooves longitudinally arranged therein, and a conipleinentally formed rail end having portions arranged within the said socket and interrupted portion when the rails are in their engaging position, and locking slides arranged through the said openings and grooves adapted for engagement with adjacent portions of the lastnamed rail end when the members are in operative arrangement.
