Be it known that I, ROBERT D. GILLETTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Charles, in the county of St. Charles, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Beading-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in those machines employed in the manufacture of shoes for the purpose of beading the tops thereof adjacent to the seam which connects the upper to the canvas or other lining, and the object of the invention is to afford a machine capable of performing this work by the application of continuons pressure over a comparatively large surface, as distingilished from the hammer-like operation of headers heretofore used wherein the upper must be moved from side to side by the operator and as further distinguished from those machines which employ rollers for the purpose described.
A further object is the provision of a machine of this character whoseconstruction.
and operation is such that the operator may easily avoid damage to the back-seam which frequently results where the beading is accomplished by aid of prior machines due to the compression of the stitching.
Other objects and advantages may be noted in the following parts of the specilication and are particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the` practice of my invention I provide a peculiarly shaped casting 1 which is se` cured upon the work-bench 2 by bolts 3 passing through its base at the rear. Projecting vertically through said casting is a shaft 4 whose lower extremity carries the clutch element 5 which may be engaged by operation of rod 6 with clutch element 7 driven by shaft 8. By reference to Fig. 5 it will be noted that cam-rollers 9 andlO are Acarried by shaft Ll, roller 9 being located oppin 1l projecting from the presserand roller 10 disposed adjacent to an extremity of a curved arm 13 which is pivoted at le and extends through a slot 15 in the standard 1G. Presser-foot 12 is suspended from the top of the casting by three helical springs, one of which is shown at 17 in Figs. 2 and while arm 13 is connected with and subjected to the pull of spring 18 whose lower end is fastened to a stationary lug or eyclet 19.
T he center of standard 1G is slotted for the insertion therein of posts QO-Zl which support the bearing-plate 22, and adjustment of the latter with respect to presser-- foot 12 may be effected through the agency of cams Zl-Qal which are formed at the inner end of threaded rods Z5-26 and bear against the beveled extremity 27 of said posts when drawn outwardly by turning members 28--29-l Thus the pressure may be regulated and either thin or thick materials accommodated. v
In operation the upper 30 is folded over the lining 31 and the latter is then inserted over the edge of plate 32 which is affixed to the upper end of arm 13 and corresponds in width to the bearing-plate 22. This having been done, the operator then engages the clutch elements 5 and 7 to eect rotation of shaft 4 and movement of the latter serves to subject pin 11 and the inner extremity of pivoted arm 13 to the action of cam-rollers 9 and 10. The latter are of such size and formation as to depress said extremity of arm 13 and thus carry the upper and its lining inward upon plate simultaneous with the commencement of the descent of presserfoot 12 which is effected through the agency of pin l1. When foot 12 engages the upper, arm 13 is released from the action of roller 10 and drawn outwardly by spring 18, while the beading is accomplished through the continued pressure of said foot until pin 11 has traversed the enlarged portion of roller 9, whereupon the operation is repeated with respect to the remainder of the top edge. It will thus be appreciated that, as the presser-foot in the preferred embodiment of my invention is but half as long as the edge of the upper, the operator is enabled to prevent damage to the backseam by simply disposing the same beyond the end of plate 22 before effecting the descent of said foot.

1. A machine of the character described comprising a presser-foot, a bearing-plate disposed therebeneath, means for depressing said foot, devices for automatically retracting the same, and mechanism for. vertically adjusting said plate rela-tive to said foot.
2. A machine of the character described comprising a presser-foot, a bearing-plate disposed therebeneath, anarm, means for projecting an extremity thereof between said foot and plate, means for depressing said foot, and devices for automatically retracting the same.
A machine of the character described comprising a presser-foot, a bearing-plate disposed therebeneath, an arm, means for projecting an extremity thereof between said foot and plate, means for depressing said foot, devices for automatically retracting the same, and mechanism for vertically adjusting said plate relative to said foot.
4. A machine of the character described comprising a presser-foot, a bearing-plate disposed therebeneath, a pin extending from said foot, a shaft, a cam-roller secured thereto adapted to depress said pin, and springs adapted to lift said foot upon release of said pin.

7. A machine of the character described comprising a presser-foot, a bearing-plate disposed therebeneath, a pin extending from said foot, an arm adapted to project between said foot and plate, a shaft, cam-rollers secured thereto adapted to depress said pin and actuate said arm, springs adapted to lift said foot upon release of said pin and withdraw said arm, posts supporting said plate, and cams disposed beneath said posts adapted to raise the saine.
