STOCK-FEEDER.
Specification of Letters .Patent.
Patented May 15, 1917.
Application filed August 16, 1916. Serial No. 115,286.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. Dawson, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Peters'burg, in the county of Menard and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stock-Feeders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to feed troughs, and more particularly to the class of automatic stock feeders.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein, when the animal places its nose within the feed trough, it will automatically effect the delivery of feed to the trough, thereby permitting the feed or other con tents of the device to be intermittently delivered to the trough in portions, it being understood, of course, that different stock materials can be placed within the device, such as salt, coarse or ground feed or the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the feed material is intermittently delivered to the trough, thereby avoiding undue waste of the contents of the device or the overflowing of the trough.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form to effect the automatic delivery of its contents for 'the feeding of stock.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in its operation, strong, durable and inexpensive in manufacture.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of ele ments and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction herein- 4 after described, and the scope of the application of which will be pended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the top or lid removed;
Fig. 4 is a sectio of Fig. 1;
a1 view on the line 4-4 indicated in the ap- Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view;
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of Fig. l.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates the body of the stock feeder including the back 5, sides 6 and upper front panel 7, while at the lower end of this body is a trough 8 for receiving feed delivered thereto in a manner presently described. Arranged within the body A is a chute 9 which has its front wall 10 inclined rearwardly for the delivery of feed in the direction of the back of the trough, and formed in the sides of this chute are notches 11 in which are received the spindles or trunnions 12 of a revolving drum or cylinder 13 having perforations 14 for the discharge of its contents therefrom, the drum 13 being provided with a door 15 which is fastened in any desired manner, and on the opening of this door the drum can be filled with feed, salt or other material to be delivered to the trough for supplying stock therewith.
On the spindles or trunnions 12 are fixed ratchet wheels 16 and loosely connected to these spindles or trunnions 12 are the forked ends 17 of operating levers 18 to which are pivoted links 19, the same being also pivoted to the suspension arms 20 of a displaceable board 21, the arms 20 being pivoted in the body A forwardly of the wheel 16 and within the fork 1'7 are arranged detents or dogs 22 which are mounted upon pivots 23, the same being disposed so that the dogs will lock with the teeth of the wheel 16 when the levers 18 are moved in one direction and will ride over the teeth of said wheel 16 on movement of the levers in the other direction.
Normally the displaceable board 21 hangs by the arms 20 at a point contiguous to the lower open front of the body A so that when the nose of the animal is poked within the trough 8 it will contact with the board 21, displacing the same, and during the movement of the board with the arms 20 the levers 18 will be swung rearwardly so that the dogs 22 which are engaged with the wheel 16 will move the said wheel for partially rotating the drum or cylinder 13, and in this manner the contents of the same will be discharged in portions through the peron the line 66 forations 14 into the chute 9, whence the material will be delivered into the trough for access by the animals.
WVhen pressure isrelieved from the board 21 it will swing to normal position. Pivoted in the body A and engageable with one of" the wheels 16 is a latch detent 24 which prevents the reverse rotation of the wheels 16 so that on the swinging of: the board: to
normal position the drum will remain stationary.
Swingingly mounted upon the body Aaat the upper end thereof is a lid or top 25 which, when raised, will permit access to the- 1 cylinder or drum 1?) for the filling thereof connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the herein described stock feeder will be readily apparent and, therefore, a more extended explana tion has been omitted.
Having thus described my invention, I
' claim:
A device of the character described comprising aibody having an opening in the front throughout the lower portion thereof, a trough carried by the body, a chute interiorly of the body, a reticulated drum rotatablyfmounteddn the body, a displaceable board suspended within the body at the open front thereof; and havingcconnection with the drum for rotating the-same on movement ofthe board in one direction for the discharge of a portion of the contents of the drum-:through .the perforations in thechute.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
