SANITARY CONNECTION.
Application led December 3, 1914.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE B. COLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of l/Vest Newton, Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Sanitary Connections, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to water closets and among other objects aims to provide simple and effective gas tight means for connecting the water closet with a soil pipe and floor.
The character of the invention may be best understood by reference to the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a horizontal section through the base of the bowl of a water closet embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the broken line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the broken line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a floor of concrete or other appropriate material having a hole therein for receiving a soil pipe 3 of iron or other material projecting somewhat above the level of the floor; 5 designates the neck of a bowl of' earthenware or other material of a water closet of usual construction. Projecting from the neck 5, preferably integral therewith, is a base 7 formed to present a recess 9, an outer encircling rim 11 and a depending ring 13.
Encircling the soil pipe is a flange 15 having a channel 17 for receiving the base ring 13. The channel may be filled with soft white lead, putty or other suitable material. When the parts are assembled the base ring 13 enters the putty filled channel and constitutes a permanent water-seal, gas-tight joint serving effectively to guard against the escape of sewer air.
Also encircling the soil pipe is a ring 19 of iron or other appropriate material adapted to bear against a gasket 21 of rub ber composition or other yielding elastic material. The ring is connected to the flange by screws 23. Preferably the flange and ring are formed to present opposed inclined surfaces which when the ring is forced downward by said screws will tend to press the gasket toward and into intimate engage- Speceation of Letters Patent.

ment with the soil pipe and form a permanent water-seal, gas-tight joint and constitute the connection between the flange and the soil pipe. The material and pressure ot the gasket 21 against the soil pipe are such that in the event of any settlement in the floor or pipe the gasket will slide along said pipe and prevent any dislocation of the parts such as might invite leakage.
The flange 15 may be secured to a floor by expansion bolts 25 threaded into anchoisleeves 27 set into the floor. Il. it is' not conA venient to introduce the sleeves into the floor, as for example in the case of a wood floor, usual wood screws may be substituted for the expansion screws 25.
To prevent any possibility of leakage between the bottom of the flange and the floor the former is recessed to receive a gasket 33 of rubber composition or other appropriate material. When the flange is screwed to the floor the gasket is pressed tightly against the same, forming a permanent seal a ainst leakage of floor-water beneath the ange, thence to and along the soil pipe to the floor below.
To lock the closet base 7 firmly to the floor it is. connected to the flange 15 by wedge means shown herein as comprising wedge shaped projections 29 on the flange designed to interlock with corresponding wedge shaped projections 31 on the base of the closet. These wedge projections are distrib uted` at intervals circumferentially of said ange and base, leaving spaces between them, thereby permitting the base to be placed over the flange and then given a rotative adjustment, causing the base projections to engage the flange projections. In the course of this rotative adjustment their wedge action will cause the ring of the base to be pressed down into the putty in the fla-nge channel and cause the rim of the base to be pressed securely against the floor and to be firmly secured to the flange. The wedge projections are so located and arranged that when the rotative adjustment of the base is completed the bowl will be in a proper position to present the flushing water inlet in registration with the flushing water supply pipe. The connection of vsaid pipe with said inlet prevents unlocking rotation of the base.
By the wedge connection described the base is secured to the flange by a simple ad justment and by devices which are contained within the base and concealed from external view. Consequently the outer sur 7 face of the base may be smooth and uninterrupted without the presence of any bolt holes, bolts, nuts, washers or other fastening devices which are unsightly, and are unsanitary as they invite the accumulation of dirt and filth which is difficult if not impossible to remove.
It will be observed that the top of the soil pipe is higher than the outer wall of the flange. Consequently if there is any defect in the putty connection between the base ring and flange the water will. escape over the outer wall oi the flange downward and thence outward between the rini and the iioor, thereby serving as a telltale of the leak.
Preferably the wedge projections for the base are formed integrally therewith, thereby reducing the number of parts necessary to assemble and contributing to the simplicity and strength of the Construction. The parts may be readily assembled without requiring the services of a skilled mechanic.
Having described one illustrative einbodiment of the invention without limiting the same thereto, what I Claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a water-closet base 7 having a rim 11 orming a recess 9 in said base, of a soil pipe 3 projecting up into said base, a ring 13 depending from said base and spaced trom said pipe to form a water-seal pocket between them, a iiange 15 encircling said pipe having a channel 1T therein, a packing confined between said channel and ring to prevent leakage of water from said pocket between them, ameniber 19 adjustably connected to said lange, a packing 21 embracing said pipe and con fined between said member and flange to prevent leakage of water from said pocket along said pipe while permitting movement of said pipe relative to said flange2 a MAURICE B.
