WILLIAM is. YOUNG, TRIC COMPANY, or
0F BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE BRYANT ELEC- IBRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
CURRENT-TAP.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in Current-Taps, of which the foll0wing is a specification.
My invention relates to current taps and particularly to a combined tap and receptacle affording connecting means for a plurality of attachment plugs. It not infrequently happens that but asingle outlet is rent utilizing appliances and it is often the case that the current utilizingdevices are structions or different from the type of receptacle provided at the outlet. The present invention provides a fitting adapted to be tapped into the outlet and affording a plurality of receptacles each of which is adapted to receive attaching plugs of different types. The object of my invention is to provide a rugged device of this type which may he cheaply manufactured without sacrificing either strength or serviceab-ility.
As shown in the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a tap emhodying my invention in one form;
Figs. 2 and 3 are opposite end elevations thereof;
Fig. 4 is an interior plan of the fitting, the-body portions of the latter being detached and separated; A
Fig. 5 is av section. on the line 55, Fig. 1; and
Figs. 6 and 'l are perspectives of the re spective terminal plates.
'As here shown the present fitting comprises a cylindrical body of insulating material formed of two lolocks 10and 11 each extension l2, 13, a cylindrical boss located at right angles to the axis of the the fitting. Passing out through and seated in channels 14 and 15 body parts 10 and 11, are for tapping current The jack 16 is inthis loose in the respective spaced jacks 16 ancl'l? from a suitable outlet.
tegral with the angled terminal plate 18 extending into the area of the cylindrical body of the fitting. The jack 13 in like manner is integral with the termin plate 19 which Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 191?. Serial No. 145,431.
is angled into another portion of the area of the cylindrical body of the fitting. Appropriate recesses 20 and 21 are formed in the meeting faces of the body portions 10 and 11 to receive the terminal plates 18 and 19 and hold the same against angular displacement. Securing screws 22 and 23 take into tapped members carried by the respec body portions and hold the terminal plates securely in position. The screw-receiving members may take the form of flanged thimbles 2i and The body of the fitting is preferably molded from insulating material of such character that the thimbles may be positioned therein during the molding operation, in which case the anges serve as anchors for holding the thimbles in fixed position.
The cylindrical body portions are in register at 26. 2?, 28, 29, to receive the two pairs of receptacle terminals 200, 2600; 270, 2700; and zso, 2800; 290, 2900, carried by the respective terminal plates 18 and 10 and projecting on opposite sides of the latter into the passages in the cylindrical body of the device. These passages or guideways are so arranged as to receive the substantially parallel or tandem jacks of a cooperating attachment plug. It is thus obvious that a plug having parallel jacks may at either end of the body of the fitting into engagement with the parallel terminals 200 and 280, or 2600 and 2800, while at the opposite end of the fitting a plug may be utilized having tandem jacks nels 27 and 29 and engage the terminals 2T0 and 290 or 2700 and 2900 therein. Or two similar attachment plugs with their blades either in parallel or in tandem may be utilized for connection to the fitting.
The two part insulating body portions may be provided on their meeting faces with positioning studs 30 and 31 which take into corresponding recesses 300 and 310 in the associated block.
pierced the parts and details of construction will 1 be inserted which enter the chan- Screws 82 and 33 pass T readily occur tothose skilled in the art which do not depart from what I claim as my invention.
I claim 2- 1. A tap device comprising cooperating body portions of insulating material pierced in register, conducting plates arranged between the juxtaposed faces of said body portions and having terminals projecting from,
0th sides of said plates into said piercings, n combination with tap terminals electrically connected to said plates and extending at right angles to the axis of the body for connection to a current outlet.
2. A tap device comprising cooperating body portions of insulating material pierced in register, conducting plates arranged between the juxtaposed faces of said body portions and having terminals projecting from opposite sides of said plates into said piercings, said terminals being arranged to receive jacks of cooperating plugs of different types.
8. A tap device comprising cooperating body portions of insulating material pierced in register, conducting plates arranged between the juxtaposed faces of said body portions and having terminals projecting from opposite sides of said plates into said piercings, said terminals being arranged to receive either parallel or tandem jacks of a cooperating plug.
4. A tap device comprising a pair of insulating blocks shaped to form a body having a boss projecting at'right angles to the axis thereof, jacks passing through said boss, terminal plates integral with said jacks and lying between the juxtaposed faces of said body parts, each of said plates carrying on its opposite faces terminal means for cooperating with jacks of different type, said body portions being pierced to afford guide- Ways in which said terminals lie.
5. In a tap device, a jack, an integral terminal plate and jack-receiving terminals attached to the opposite faces of said plate. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
