IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,639, dated January 9, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in EarthScrapers, invented by MADI- soN NEWTON, of Kentland, in the county of Newton and State of Indiana.
The nature of my invention consists in such a combination, with the scoop and the notched beam of a pivoted detent manipulated by the handles, that the scoop may be locked to the beam and liberated therefrom by means of the handles, without any intervening mechanism; it also consists in the adjustability of the atpermit of changing the inclination or pitch of the scoop with relation to the beam.

The scoop A carries upon-its back two fixed standards, A A which, extending beyond its upper edge, are connected together by a stayrod, A It is also provided with a slotted guide, 13, through which the rear end of the arched beam 0 passes, a pin, 0, being screwed transversely in and near the extreme rear end of the beam to prevent its ever being drawn out of the guide. The arched beam is further connected with thescoop by the draftrods D D, which are pivoted to the beam near its front end, at d, and diverging thence to the rear, are respectively hinged at the sides of the scoop to the projecting ends of the rod E. The latter is passed horizontally through holes a a in the standards A A, and in order to provide for the adjustment of the pitch of the scoop at this point a number of holes, a, are boredthrough thestand ards, one above another, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, to change the location of the rod E until the scoop obtains the desired inclination with reference to the line of draft. The beam, which is bent into the arched form, best seen inFig. 2, so that it may be out of theway of clods of earth which may be scraped up by the scoop, has a series of notches, c c, in its lower edge for the reception of the detent F. This detent is a metallic head provided with a slot through which the beam passes, and with flanges f f to which are secured the bars G G; the latter, diverging from the head F to the rear, are pivoted upon the rod A of the scoop, and constructed at their extreme rear ends with handles H H, by which the bars Gr G can be conveniently turned on the rod A to the extent the beam 0 may permit.
In operation the detent F is locked to the beam at one or another of its notches, according to the pitch it may be most desirable to give to the scoop the machine being drawn forward and the scoop cutting into the earth cause the detent to be pushed with force against the straight vertical edge of the notch in the beam, and to bind thereon so tightly that the two will be kept locked together without any exertion by the operator. When the scoop is filled, and it is desired to dump the load, the operator pushes or draws the handles up a little, which will turn the detent down and liberate it from the notch in the beam; there being new no resistance offered to the upper portion of the scoop it will immediately turn on the rod E, and, throwing the load forward, ride over it; or, by suitable manipulation, it may be made to distribute it. In this operation the detent slides on the beam forward, its own weight causing it to rest with the top edge of the slot on the upper edge of the beam, so that it will not engage with any one of the notches therein. To right the scoop for another operation, the operator turns it upon the rod E by pulling the handles rearward, and when the detent is opposite the proper notch in the beam he bears down on the handles, and thus locks the detent to the beam.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the scoop A and notched beam 0, of the detent F, which is manipulated by means of the handles, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the scoop A, of the adjustablerod E, draft-rods D D, and beam G, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
