To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM RIx'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pond Eddy, in the county of Sullivan and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Rail-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generally to rail holders, and aims to provide a novel device for effectively holding the rails of a railroad track, and enabling old rails to be used for this purpose to advantage, the present device serving to hold the rails secure, whereby to prevent the tipping, spreading, lifting or other lateral displacement thereof.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction, hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of the holder, portions thereof being broken away.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention, the holder is formed from an old or discarded rail, the rail being cut into suitable lengths to provide the holders. The holder is of any desired length, and has the cross section of an ordinary railroad rail, the holder having the relatively wide base or base flanges 1, the upstanding web 2, and the head or tread 3 supported by the web. The holder is adapted to rest upon the ordinary railroad tie or sleeper disposed transversely of the track, and the base 1 can be spiked or otherwise fastened upon the tie.
The holder is provided with vertical slots open at their upper ends, one for each rail R, and if there is a guard rail an additional slot or slots canbe provided therefor. Each slot has a relatively wide or'broad lower closed end 4 within the upper portion of the base 1 and lower portion of the web 2, and the intermediate vertical portion 5 of the slot is relatively narrow and extends from the lower portion of the web 2 upwardly into the head 3, the upper end of the slot being widened, as at 6, within the upper portion of the head 3, to provide opposite shoulders 7. The slot is of the same cross section as the rail R which extends vthrough the slot, with its head or tread fitting within the widened portion 6 and seating upon the shoulders 7. The web of the rail R fits within the narrow portion 5 of the slot, and the base of the rail fits within the lower widened end 4 of the slot, and seats upon the lower horizontal web portion 9 formed below the slot and connecting the portions of the holder at opposite sides of the slot. The head 3 is provided at one side of the slot or widened portion 6 thereof with a recess 8 for accommodating the wheel flanges at the inner side of the rail. The head or tread of the rail will, with the arrangement of the slot as specified, project above the head 3 of the holder, and the weight or strain imposed upon the rail R in depressing the portion 9 will cause the portions of the holder at the opposite side of the rail to bind tightly against the rail and hold it tighter, the greater the weight or pressure is on the rail. The present device will therefore hold the rails secure and prevent the same from tipping, spreading or being displaced otherwise transversely thereof. The present holder also eliminates the necessity of using tie plates underneath the rails as usual.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A rail holder of rail-shaped cross section having a base, an upstanding web, and a head supported by the web, said holder having an upwardly opening slot whose lower end is closed and relatively wide in the upper portion of said base and lower portion of said web, the intermediate portion of said slot being relatively narrow and extending from the lower portion of the web upwardly into said head, and the upper portion of the slot being relatively wide in the upper portion of said head.
