.UNITED TAE NELSON V. MERRILL, OF GOFFSTO WN, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,628, dated January 9, 1872.
Specification describing a Blind-Fastener, invented by NELsoN V. MERRILL, of Goffstown, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire.
The rst part of my invention relates to conuectin g a spiral spring to the central part ofl the catch in such a manner that when the blind is opened or closed suddenly it is sure to remain fastened also, the fastener is so constructed that the blind can be locked when closed. The second part of my invention relates to a lever reachingirom the catch to the edge of the blind, so that when open it can be closed without reaching to the middle of the blind.
The body part that is fastened to the blind is a piece of metal about two inches long and one and one-fourth inch wide, oval in shape, with posts on the lower side to hold the catch and lever in their places. It has a hole in the center for a part of the catch to pass through to receive the spiral spring; also, a hole about three-eighths of an inch from the center to receive a part of the catch to form the lock, and a screw-hole at each side to fasten it to the blind. The catch is about three inches long and three-eighths of an inch wide, with apost at the center about an inch lon g for the spiral spring 5 also, another post three-eighths of an inch from the center to form the lock. The leveris arod, having aknee about three-eighths of an inch long at the end, connecting with the catch, the other end bent, so as to raise the catch. The lock is a Hat piece of metal about threefourths of an inch long and one-half of an inch wide, with two holes through the same. One plays upon the central post of the catch, and the other in a groove in' the shortest post, the spiral spring holding it in its place.
Figure l is a side view of a blind-fastener, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is the top side. Fig. 3 is the bottom side, as fastened to the blind. Fig. 4 shows the shape 0f the lever as it connects with the catch. Fig. 5 is a part of a blind, with the blind-fastener on the same.
Fig. l--A is the spiral spring. B is the catch. C are the posts to hold the catch and lever in their places. D is the short post that forms the lock.
Fig. 2 E is the body; D, the short post of the catch 5 F is the lock.
Fig. S-Gr is the bottom edge of the blind. B is the catchf C are the posts to hold the catch and/ lever in their places. H is the lever.
Fig. 4--1 is the knee to the lever.
Fig. 5-J is the blind. H is the lever.
I claim as my invention- 1. The shutter or blind-fastener, consisting of the plate E, attached to the lower edge ot' the blind, and the double catch B, provided with two upright posts, on one of which is a spiral spring, while the other serves as alocking-pin, in combination with a locking device, F, chambered between the bottom of the blind and the body plate, working below the springs, through a slot upon one of the catch-plate posts, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. I claim, also, in 'combination with the above, the bent lever H, arranged to release the catch from the inside by rotary motion, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
NELSON V. MERRILL.
