i and a resident of Tarentum, m the county of Allegheny and vState of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sound-Boxes for Sound-Reproducing. Machines;
the following ttoI be a full, clear,.' and exact description thereof.
y invention pertains to sound boxes for sound reproducing machines and the like. It isv the principal object fofv the invention to improve upon the tonal qualities of the sound reproduced by such instrument.`
A sound box constructed in vaccordance wlth my invention is described, by way of'V 22 of Fig. 1'.
Referring to the drawing, the sound boxl comprises a 'cylindrical open-ended'casing 10, having an inwardly extending flange 11 e open rear end of the casing 10 is covered by an ornamental perforated plate 12. Upon the flange 1v1 are placed a pair of annular washers respectively, the washer 14 bearing the vibratory diaphragm 15 which may be of any of the wellknown constructions. To the center of .the diaphragm 15 i's'coiinected a needle bar 16, which is connected to a" Suits ably mounted needle socket 17. Like Ythe diaphragm, the needle bar and needle socket may be of any of the well known constructions.
18, and upon this, 19. Upon lthe periphery of the disk 19 1s placed an annular washer 20, the latter being of such dimensions as to ed slightly Specification of Letters Patent.

beyond'the front endy of the casin projecting edge of the washer 20 :s
' front plate 21 which is secured, in any to the casing 10. plate 21 is apertured at its center and cal"- he character ordinarily used `for being connected to the horn extension, or swinging arm, 4of a gramophone or d wreproducing machine. It will be seen that, when the front plate '21 is secured in place, it will ela and dialphragm 15 tween t eir respective washers.
The disk 19 is made sufficiently heavy not to be capable of material vibration and is imperforate, except at points 4near its ep' riphery .where it is provided with a plurality o f holes 23. I have found that by the proh as the disk 19, 'intercentral sound-exit opening of a sound box,
h disk is provided with openin s adjacent its periphery the tonal qualit1es of the sound reproduce by the device are much im roved and corrected.
aving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent is zsound box for talking machines or the like, comprising a cylindrical casing having a sound-exit opening disposed centrally of one end thereof, a diaphragm carried by said caslng, means for transmitting vibrations to said diaphragm, said transmitting means being attached solely to thel center of said diaphragm, a disk on the side of said diaphragm toward said opening, said disk being substantially parallel -with said diaphragm and ing spaced-a material distance therefrom and from said end, and `said disk being imperi-'crate at 4and adjacent its center and being formed with apertures adjacent the periphery therof.
In testimony whereof, Runnin', have hereunto set my hand.
