HOWAIRl) M. BARBER, OF STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO 0. B. COTTRELIJ 8c SONS COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATIONOF DELAWARE FLAT-SHEETDELIVERY MECHANISM FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
. a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flat-Sheet Delivery Mechanism for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide novel means for preventing the sagging and falling ahead of the sheets in the delivery mechanism as the sheets are being delivered; said means including a yielding device traveling with the endless delivery carrier and arranged to engage the tail end of a. sheet beingdelivered and press it against a stationary sheet support, which device as it rides off from the sheet support will deflect the tail end of the sheet downwardly .as its head end is released by the delivery.
carrier grippers.
Means may be provided for adjusting the said stationary sheet support and the said yielding device, one or both, to cause them to act successfully on sheets of different lengths.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectio through so much of a hat sheet delivery mechanism as embodies my invention.
1 Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail plan view.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section taken in the plane of the line A-A of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4: is a detail horizontal section, taken in the plane of the line BB of Fig. 3.
In the embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings, the endless delivery carrier comprises the side chains 1. passing around the sprocket wheels 2. which endless delivery carrier is provided with one or more sets of grippers 41. 5, arranged to engage the head ends of the sheets as the sheets are fed through the rollers 6, 7, on to the guides 8 of the stationary sheet support, which guides exteiu part way along beneath the endless delivery carricr/ There may be any desired number of these guides 8, whiehguides are adjustably supported in brackets 9, 10. carried by Cl()SSl):ll'S 11, 12. of the machine. These guides may be ad- Specification of Letters Patent.

justed forwardly and rearwardly if desired,
for sheets of different lengths, as for instance, by providing the brackets 9, 10, with clamp screws 13, 14. The sheet receiving table is denoted by 15, the front stops-by 16, and the back joggers by 17. Downwardly inclined front sheet guides 18 are supported from the arms 19, carried by the cross-bar 2,0, for directing the head ends of the sheets on to the table as they are released by the grippers e1, 5. A cam 21 is provided for controlling the operation-of the grippers at the receiving end of the delivery carrier and a cam 22 is provided for controlling the operagrippers at the delivery end of I tion of the the carrier.
The yielding-device for engaging the tail ends of the sheets and pressing them against the stationary sheet guide and for deflecting the tail ends of the sheets downwardly as the head ends are released by the grippers and the tail ends leave the stationary support, is herein shown as comprising a pluralitv of spring-actuated rollers 23, one for each stationary sheet guide 8. Each of idle rollers 23 is mounted on a stud axle 24 secured by a bolt 25 to the free end of a flat 8() spring arm 26, the other end of which arm is secured by a bolt 27 to a stud 28 screwed into a rigid arm 29 mounted on a cross-bar 30, the ends of which cross-bar 30 are secured to the side chains 1 of the endless delivery carrier by bolts 31.
The stud 28 may be turned in the arm 29 to secure the desired tension for the spring arm 26, and it is secured in such adjustment by a nut 32. The arm 29 is adjustable 1aterally along the cross-bar 30 to bring the roller 23 in alinement with its stationary sheet-v guide 8, andthe arm is also rotatively adjustable on the bar 30, to adjust the device within a limited distance to sheets of diflerent lengths. A stud 33 serves to clamp the arm 29 in its desired lateral androtative adjustments. If the rotative adjustment of the ,arm 29 is not sufficient, the bar 30 may be adjusted from link to link on the chains of the endless delivery carr ier. In the present instance I have shown two adjacent links 34 as beingprovided with lugs 35 for the attachment ofthe ends of the cross-bar 30.
In operation, the sheet as it comes from the press isfedthrough the rollers 6, 7,
sheet support.
BEST AVAILABLE COP into position to be seized by the grippers 4, 5. of the endless delivery earrier. 'lhese grippers draw the sheet from the stationary 'lhe yielding device hereinbefore described. is brought into engagement. with the tail eml ot the sheet and presses the sheet against the stationary sheet support. As the grippers L 5, are opened to release the head end of the sheet, the. tail end of tluysheet leaves the stationary sheet support and is deflected by the yielding device. The front sheet guide 18 serves to (letter-t. the head end of the sheet and the sheet will thereby be deposited vertieally on to the table. in, without any tendency oi the sheet to'sag or fall ahead.
It is obvious that the delivery carrier may be provided with any desired number of grippers and tail end sheet engaging de-j vices, and it will be seen that the devices may be adjusted together with the sheet support if so desired,'-to suit sheets of different lengths.
