ATTACHMENT FOR WAGON-BEACHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1917.
Application filed October 12, 1915. Serial No. 55,578.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT SEXAUER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Madrid, in the county of Boone and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Attachment for Wagon- Beaches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for wagon reaches of simple, durable and inexpensive construction.
A further object is to provide an attachment designed. to be secured to any wagon reach for limiting the up and down movement of the hounds and for permitting the hounds to travel on a rotating member for reducing the friction on the'hounds.
Still a further object is to provide an attachment for wagon reaches having a rotating member capable of vertical adjustment with relation to the reach, whereby the device may be adapted for use with hounds of various kinds.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: c
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a front portion of a wagon running gear equipped with an attachment for reaches embodying my invention.
Fig. 2shows a side elevation of one end of my attachment applied to the reach.
In the accompanying drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate generally the front axle of a wagon or the like. A tongue 11 is mounted on the running gears in the ordinary way. The wagon has the bolster 12 and the curved hound member 13. The reach 14 is secured in the ordinary way by means of the king pin 15 extending through the bolster.
My improved attachment comprises a pair of oppositely spaced brackets each having an upright member 16, a horizontal member 17 and a diagonal brace member 18. The member 17 is secured to the reach by means ofbolts 19 which may be selectivel mounted in the holes shown by the dotte lines at 20, whereby the brackets may be mounted at the proper places on the lower side of the reach.
Formed in the upright members 16 are openings indicated by the dotted 111168 21,
arranged at different heights to receive spindles 22 of a roller 23 which is mounted between the opposite members 16. The hound 13 travels between the roller 23 and the reach 14.
ing and particularly when the wagon is backed, it commonly occurs that the hounds are jerked upwardly and downwardly and tend to be sprung apart, so that the distance between them is increased and the reach is subjected to sharp pounding and the reach and hound members are thereby subjected to wear and injury. When the hounds become sprung out of shape, the wear on the king pin is increased and the bolster is sometimes forced out of its proper position and the king pin is sometimes bent. With my improved attachment the hound member 13 will be properly held between the roller 23 and the reach 14, so that the up and down movement of the hound member 13 is limited and the jerking and pounding on the reach are reduced to a minimum. If desired where my improved attachment is used, the up or hound member 24 may be dispensed w1th entirely.
It will be noted that where hounds of ordinary construction are used, the lateral turning movement of the axle is limited on account of the fact that the spaced members 25 between the outer ends of the hound member 24. and the hound member 13 engage the reach and serve as stops. Where the hound member 24 is dispensed with, as may be done with my improved attachment, the wagon can be turned more sharply since the stops 25 are then not used.
The hound member 13 ordinarily travels on the roller 23 so that the friction on the hound member is less than is the case where the running gears are of ordinary construction. When the up. and down movement of the hound member 13 is limited, there is less strain on the bolster and the king pin, and the parts are held in their true position better than is otherwise the case.
It will be noted that the roller 23 may be adjusted vertically for removing the bolts 19 and removing one of the brackets and raising and lowering the roller 23 until the spindles 22 are selectively received in the proper openings 21.
It will be understood that some changes may be made in the construction and ar rangement of the parts of my improved attachment for Wagon reaches Without departmembers, and selectively received in the openings in said reach, each bracket having a vertical member provided With a plurality of 0 enin a roller having at its ends spin les se ecti'vely received in the openings in said vertical members, and a diagonal brace connecting the horizontal member of each bracket with the vertical member thereof.
