ROTARY TYPE-SUPPLY DRUM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 10, 1909, Serial No. 482,530. Renewed October 6, 1916. Serial No. 124,206.
To all "whom it may] concern.
Be it-known, that I, VVAL'rnn \Vnrsrrr, a citizen of the, United States, residing at tate of New York, have in ltotary Type-Supply Drums, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a rotary type supply drum, or magazine for carrying a quantity of grooved type, loosely slidable in channels therein, together with a holder suitable for receiving type from said magazine, so that when placed therein an impression may be taken from the face of said type,
when said holder is placed in, and used in connection with a machine constructed for.
that purpose.
The object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this character simple in construction and capable of being used with great speed and accuracy for setting up type in name and address holders, which may be done by sliding type from the channels of the type drum into corresponding channels in a holder, by the use of a pointed stick or other suitable instrument, such holder being adapted for use in connection with a machine for printing the names and addresses on the headings of typewritten letters, when it is desirable to send the same letter, or subject matter, to a number of different firms or individuals, as is customary in circularizing, and also for printing such names and addresses on cards, for card indexes, or upon away.
statements, envelops and similar purposes.
The object of the invention however is understood not to be limited in its use to these particular purposes, as any suitable member for holding type, and receiving it from the different channels of the type drum, from which a printed impression could be taken when placed in a machine for that purpose, may be substituted for the holder here shown, aswill be readily understood from the drawings and description here given.
Figure 1, is a side elevation of my apparatus partly in section. Fig. 2, is an end View of same,.parts of which are broken Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a Inetalbase from which extend supports 2, for ashaft 3, which rotates in bearings d, in the upper ends of said supports. To said shaft is secured by screws, the hubs 5, of a type drum 6, so as to rotate therewith. Said type drum is composed of end supports 7, which extend from the hubs 5, to the rims 8, upon which are supported ribs or rails 9 which extend longitudinally across the drum from one rim to the other. The said rails 9 are set a short distance apart so as to form grooves or type channels 9, between said rails, and in which are slidably carried, grooved type 10. The shaft 3, extends be yond the end of the type drum on the left, andhas secured thereto, and rotating therewith, an index wheel 12, which is of the same diameter as the type drum, and similar in construction to the ends thereof. Said index wheel 12, has on its upper side or face, a character index 14, and attachedto one of the supports 7 of said index wheel, is a shaft 15, on which as will be hereafter explained, is loosely mounted a handle 16. Mounted on said shaft 15 and slidable longitudinally thereon is a sleeve 13, to the inner side of which is secured a centering and locking pin 19, the right end of which is located in, and
slidable through, a hole 17 in one of the supports 7 of the index wheel. The movement of the handle 16, and therefore also of the sleeve 13 to the right, causes the pin 19 to enter any one of a series of holes 20, in the stationary locking plate 21, which is supported by rods 21, and when said handle 16, and therefore with it the sleeve 13 and the locking pin 19, are moved on the shaft 15, to the left, the locking pin will be withdrawn from the hole 20 far enough to the left to remove it out of contact with the locking plate 21, so that it may, together with the index wheel and type drum, be rotated without coming in contact with any of the holes of the locking plate. When it is again clesired to lock the drum from further rotation, this can be done by pressing the handle to the ri ht against the pressure of the spring 18 so that the centering or locking pin 19 will again enter any one of the holes 20 of the locking plate 21, which is at that time opposite thereto, thus again locking, the drum from further rotation until the pin 19 is again withdrawn by sliding the handle 16 to the left, in which position it is normally held by the pressure of the spring 18.
On a frame 22,supported by an upward extension 23, from the support 2 on the left, is slidably supported in undercut grooves 24;, a carriage 25, in which there is removably carried a holder 26, in which are longitudinal type channels 27. Said holder is Patented May 15, an. I
is es an sic.
locked in said carriage on its lower side by a pro]ect1on or hp 28, and on its upper side by a tongue 29, of a lever 30 pivoted on said carriage at 31. Said carriage 25, may be locked in any one of several positions against upward or downward movement by a- V- 'shaped spring 33, which meshes in any one of a series of V-shaped recesses 34, on the bottom of said carria e. The said carriage however, may be moved upwardor downward by overcoming the pressure of said spring, and thus raising. its end out of any one of said recesses 34:, but when said spring is centered in any one of said recesses, one of the type channels 27 of the holder, will then be in alinement with one of the type channels 9 of the type drum, if drum is at that time locked against further rotation by the locking pin 19 then being in one of the holes 20 in the locking plate 21., and
when the holder 26 and the type drum 6 are in such positions, the type 10 may, by sliding the same with a pointedstick or any other suitable instrument be moved from a type channel 9 of the type drum, into one of the type channels 27, of the name and address holder.
As there are as many holes 19 in the locking plate 21, as there are type channels in the type drum, any one of said type channels may be locked opposite to a fixed pointer 35, secured to the locking plate 21; therefore by using each type channel of the type drum for a different character or type, and by placing a cut or impression of such characters on the index 14, directly opposite to the type channels in which the different type are carried, then by rotating said type drum until the pointer 35 is directly opposite to the desired character on said index, if the type drum is then locked at that point, by the locking pin 19, the type channel of the type drum containing type of the same character as that show'n'on the index directly opposite to the said pointer, will then be in alinement with a type channel 27 of the holder 26, so that one or more of such type may then be moved from the channel of the type drum, into a type channel of the holder, and this operation may be repeated until all the type of different characters desired, have been moved from the different channels of the type drum into one of the channels of the holder 26, for the purpose of setting up a name and address, or other type faced matter therein.
,From the frame 22 extends anarm 36, on
V which is adjustably supported an arm rest 87, on a shaft 38 threaded at its lower end so that by turning said shaft, the arm rest 37 may be raised or lowered to suit the convenience' of the user. I
On the left side of the type drum, there is provided a stationary guard plate 89 supported from the base 1, and which fits close to the ends of the type channels of the tye drum for the purpose of preventlng the removal of the type therefrom, except at the point where said plate is cut away a sulficient distance to allow the upward or downward movement of the holder, so that any one of the type channels thereof, to be brought into alinement with any one of the type channels of the type drum, so that the ends of the type channels of the type drum, will fit closely up against the end of-a type channel of the holder, and thus make one continuous type channel in both the holder and type drum, so that type may be moved out of a channel in either into a channel into the other without passing through any intermediate part. On the right end ofsaid type drum, the rim 8 is extended upward past the ends of the type channels 9, thus preventing the removal of type from the channels at that end of the drum.. I
The distance from one type channel to another, in the holder 26, may be varied to suit conditions, by having the undercut recesses 34: on the carriage 25, placed nearer to each other, or farther. apart from each other, thus varying the distance of one line of type from another, or one type channel from the other, and this change can be made in connection with the holder and carriage, without the necessity of changing in any detail the construction of the type drum, the
position of the type channels in said drum, or interfering in any manner with the index, centering or locking pin, or any other part of the construction.
The channels in the holder 26, in which it is usually necessary to economize room, may be placed more closely together than the channels in the drum 6, as shown. The ends of the holder 26 close those channels in the drum 6, which are next above and below the channel from which type is being transferred. Moreover, there is'no liability of the operator making a mistake through having more than one channel in the type drum registering with channels in the holder 26.
