Description

P. J. TROY.
BALL COCK. APPLICATION FILED APR.25. 1916.

WITNESSES 7 I WVVENTOR. 35% W TTORNEY.
PATRICK JOSEPH TROY, OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT.
BALL-COCK.
Application filed April 25, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PA'JTKIOK Josnri-r TnoY, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Ball-Cock, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to the class of devices more especially used for controlling the supply of liquid to tanks, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a device of this class that shall be extremely simple in its construction, effective in its operation and requiring little trouble in its care.
One form of device embodying my invention, and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in side elevation of my improved ball cock. I
Fig. 2 is a view in lengthwise central sec tion through the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail view in cross section on plane denoted by dotted line 33 of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings the nu meral 5 indicates the body of my improved valve having an inlet passage 6 extending through it and with a counterbored recess 7 at the inlet end extending inwardly for a short distance and of comparatively little depth as compared with the length of the passage 6. A flange 8, preferably of octagonal form, extends around the body near one end, a thread 9 for the reception of a nut 10 being located on one side of the flange and a thread 11 for the reception of a cap 12 being located on the opposite side of said flange. The extreme end of this body in which the valve seat is located, is smaller in-diameter than the main body of the valve, this smaller part extending for some distance from this end. While this reduction may assume different forms, that shown herein satisfactorily answers the requirements, in which it is rounded forming a dome shaped tip 13 that has a recessed valve seat 14.
The cap 12 fits the thread 11 and is of a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1917. Serial No. 93,388.
length to provide a chamber 16 between the dome shaped tip and the top 17 of the cap. The cap is of cylindrical form and its interior chamber is also preferably of cylindrical form from end to end.
The valve comprises a stem 18 extending through an opening in the top 17 and with a flange 19 in position to be located within the chamber 16, a screw threaded stud 20 projecting inwardly from the flange and receiving a valve 21 constructed of any suitable material and secured directly upon the stud 20. The end of. this valve is of spherical form and shaped to fit the recessed seat 14. This construction provides a very efficient means for controlling the flow of liquid through the passage 6 and it is also extremely durable as it readily assumes a form to eflectively close the opening under varying conditions.
Outlet ports 22 are formed through the walls of the cap 12 at a point opposite the dome shaped tip 18 and preferably on that side of a plane toward the inlet end of the body, which plane extends across the cap at the end of the tip 18 and at right angles to the axis thereof.
A valve lever 23 is pivoted on a lever support 2st extending from the cap, this lever being adapted to receive a ball float in a manner common to devices of this kind. It will be noted that liquid in entering a tank passes through the outlet mouth of the passage 6 through the body, striking the valve 21 and then passing through the outlet ports 22 and into the tank. The construction is one employing a minimum number of parts and these parts are of the simplest form of construction. The device has been found from extended useto avoid all hissing or other objectionable sounds.
l/Vhile I have shown and described herein a satisfactory construction of parts embodying my invention, these may be departed from to a greater or lesser degree and yet be Within the spirit and intent of the invention.
I claim A ball cock including a body having a passage extending therethrough and with a valve having an opening partially through rounded end including a valve seat, a cap it to receive said threaded stud, said valve secured to the body and providing a valve being rounded to provide a space between it chamber between its outer end and the body and the valve body gradually increasing in and having ports through its side Wall, a length outwardly, said valve fitting in said plunger mounted in said chamber and havvalve seat when in the closed position.
mg a threaded stud at its inner end, and a PATRICK JOSEPH TROY.
