SHEET METAL BARREL. APPLICATION man JULY a. 1916.
Patented May15, 1917.
' mourns SILK, or roivrsmoo'rn, OHIO.
1 SHEET-METAL BARREL.
To all whom it 71,: 13/ concern.
Be it known that I, Tnomis SILK, a .citizen of the United States of America, and
resident of Portsmouth, county of Seioto, and State of Ohio,-have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Metal Barrels, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates broadly 'to sheetmetal barrels, and more particularly to a chime for such barrels.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a steel barrel wherein theflbody and head are relatively disposed to form a chime and wherein said parts have thei-r'extreme edges united by welding. 1
A further object is to provide in association with a welded-seam chime and a chimeembracing hoop, means whereby said hoop is effectually interlocked with said chime.
A still further objectof the invention is to provide, in association with a chime and a reinforcing chime-hoop, a wire ring which constitutes a locking medium between said chime and said hoop.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement of. parts and combinations of elements which will hereinafter be exemplified, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of stantially as in Fig. 1.
this specification, in which- Fi ure 1 is a vertical section of one end of a arrel constructed in accordance with my invention, and I Fig. 2 is a detail section illustrating a modified form.
-Referring specifically to Fig. 1, which illustrates the preferred form of invention,
1 indicates the body of a sheet-metal barrel, and 2 a head of said barrel. Said head, which has a peripheral flange 3, is disposed in seated positi'on.\vitliin the end of said. body with said flange closely engaging the latter, the edge'of said flange and'the edge of said body being flush,-one with the other,
. after which said" edges are welded together in any appropriate manner to a. depth approximating the thickness of the metal.
A wire ring 4 is disposed in embracing relation to the chime constituted by the engagingportions of the body 1 and headfian e-3-at a suitable distance 'below the wel ed edges of said parts; and disposed in embracing relation to said chime and said ring is a relatively heavy metal hoop 5hav- Specification of Letters Patent. ing the inner member (3 thereof, disposed in In applying the hoop 5,a great pressure is applied for rolling or turning the mem-.
" her 7 into interlocking relation with the ring 4. This; pressure sufiices to 'force the ring 4 slightly inward, indenting or forming a per-.
ceptible bow in the chime, as shown at 8.
BIS.
This how may also extend to; the i'nnerinem ber 6ofthe hoop, as shown at 9. .;Beingreceived in'the seat constituted by the indentation of the metal, as aforesaid, said wire ring 4 obviously serves as a medium whereby chance disengagement of the hoop from the chime is prevented. In other words, since the, ring is maintained by the hoop in-"positive seating relation to the chime, and said hoop is disposed in clamping relation to said ring, the hoop and chime are positively interlocked.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the body 1 and head flange 3 have their edges bent upon each other to form an interlocked seam as distinguished from the welded seam in Fig. 1, and the wire ring 4 is disposed in closely underlying relation, to said interlocked seam. lfhe metal hoop 5" is disposed in interlockingrelation to said ring sub- What is claimed is 1. A sheet-metal barrel comprising a body, a head having a peripheral flange,
said flange being seated within an end of said body to form a chime of double thickness, a wire ring embracing said chime, and a chime-efmbracing hoop having a part disposed in seated relation to the inner face of said chime and having another part bent to conformably e nbrace and interlock with said ring.
2. A sheet-metal barrel comprising a body, a head having a peripheralfiange, said flange being seated within an end of said body toforin a chime of double thick- ;'hcss said chime being slightly bowed to body, ahead having a peripheral flange,
. 3. A sheet-metal barrel comprising a said flange being seated within an end of.
said body to form a chime of double thickness, said chime being slightly bowed to fornran annular channel, a wire ring seated in said'channel, and a hoop disposed in iuclosing relation to the chime and said wire and interlocking with the latter.
4. A sheet-metal barrel comprising a body, a head having a peripheral flange, said flange beiugseated within an'end of said body to form a chilne of double thickness, the parts of said chime having their edges welded together. a 'ring embracing said chime. and a 'hoop disposed in clamping relation to said chime and said ring, said hoop being interlocked with said ring and exerting such a binding force-that a ring-seating indentation is formed in said chime.
A sheet-metal barrel comprising a body, a head having a peripheral flange. said flange being seated within an end of said body to form a chime of double thickness, the parts'of said-chime having their with the latter.
edges welded together, a ring embracing said chime. and a hoop disposed in inclosing relation to said chime and said ring, said ring being interlocked with said chime and said hoop being interlocked with said ring.
(3. A sheet-metal barrel comprising a body. a head having' a peripheral flange,
v said flange being seated within an end of a chime of double thickness, the parts of said chime having their edges welded together. a hoop dis )osed in inclosing relation to said chime, and a member interposed between said hoop and one side of said chime constituting a locking medium whereby the former is interlocked said body to form In testimony whereof, I afiix m signa ture in presence of two subscribing wit-' IIQSSBS.
