burning out the circuit or of short circuiting the same. It is a further object to 0btain a unit construction which may be built up to form a heater of any desired size or area. With these objects in view the invention comprises the construction as hereiny after set forth.

A is a support of refractory insulating material, such as porcelain, and which is provided with a conical portion. B is a tapering coil of the resistor wire, which is supported upon the conical portion of the insulator and is held thereby from displacey ment. The small end of the coil B has a terminal portion C, which passes through an axial aperture D in the insulator A while the large or base coil of the resistor is supported in a groove E and has a terminal F passing through the insulator. Thus the two ends of the coil are securely anchored to the insulator, .While the convolutions of the coil are held from displacement -by their conical support. The convolutions are preferably in contact with each other, but on account, ofthe slight di'erence of potential between the contacting portions there will be practically no leakage of current thereacross.
yVith the unit constructed as described various forms of electric heaters may be obtained by merely assembling a sufficient number of the units to produce the required resistance. Each unit forms a center of radiation and also a luminous point which has an attractive appearance. As shown in Fig. 1, the units are assembled by being placed in apertures in a front plate G of any suitable material, not necessarily of an insulating nature. A shoulder H on the insulator bears against the rear face of this plate, and a suitable backing plate I may be placed beneath the insulators to inclose the terminal connections. The terminals of each unit extend laterally from the insulator and may be coupled by clamps J or other suitable means. Thiis the assembling of any desired number of units is quickly performed, and when the backing plate I is in position it will hold the 'units from displacement.
That we claim as our invention is 1. An electrical heater, comprising a series of units each comprising an insulator support having a conical and a shouldered portion, and a tapering coil seated upon and anchored to said conical portion. means for connecting a plurality of said units in series, a mounting for said units in spaced relation to one side of said means, and an apertured plate supported upontthe shouldered portions of said insulator supports upon the opposite side of said connecting means.
2. An electrical heating unit, comprising an insulator support having a conical portion, and a tapering resistor coil engaging said `conical portion, having contacting ad- .jacent convolutions of slight resistance.
3. An electrical heating unit, comprising an insulator support having a conical portion, and a tapering close-coiled resistor of slight resistance between convolutions supported on said conical portion and anchored -thereto by a central terminal wire.
