Improvement in Rifles for Sharpening Harvester Cuttrs.
No. 122,573. Patentedlan.9,1872.
WILLIAM H. DANIELS, OF BRYAN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN RIFLES FOR SHARPENING HARVESTER-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,573, dated January 9, 1872'.
Specification describing a certain Improvement in Rifles for Grinding Harvester-Knives, invented by WILLIAM H. DANIELS, of Bryan, WVilliams county, Ohio.
This invention relates to that class of rifles which is constructed with grinding-surfaces of a form especially adapted for sharpening at one operation the adjacent edges of two ad-. joining triangular knives of a harvester cutter-bar.
Those now known have the form of a lozenge or rhom in cross-section, so that the ob tuse angle formed by the two sides of one grinding-surface is equal to that formed by the sides of the opposite grinding-surface. The practical objection to a rifle thus made is that only one or two sizes of knives can be properly sharpened with it; and my improvement, which is intended to remove this objection, consists in making the two grinding-surfaces of these rifles of different conformation, and thus to enlarge their scope of usefulness by adapting them for sharpening various sizes of harvester-knives.
Figure 1 is a perspective view ofmy improved rifle. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof.
The same letters of reference are used in both figures in the designation of identical parts.
The body of the rifle is niade of wood, and covered upon its principal surfaces with fine emery. One of the grinding-surfaces is formed by the sides A and A, which meet at an angle and are of a width appropriate for grinding or sharpening the larger sizes of harvesterknives. The opposite grindin g-surface is made narrower, and its sides B and B form a more acute angle at their junctions than the opposite sides A and A, 'so as to accommodate it to the smaller sizes of harvester-knives. Thus made the rifle may be advantageously used on all sizes of harvester-knives without being either subjected to uneven wear and consequent speedy uselessness, or sharpening the edges of the knives at an improper angle. At each end the rifle is provided with a fixed handle, 0, for convenience in operating it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the hereindescribed rifle for grinding the knives of harvester cutter-bars, its two grinding-surfaces being obtuse angles of different degrees, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 18th day of November, A. D. 1871, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
