To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PEARL M. HALLnR, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Bay skilled in the art to which it appertainsto p make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fire extinguishers and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device which isv automatic in operation and which is so constructed igs to be readily released and operated whe -a fusible link is melted or burned through.
' Another object of the invention is to provide a fire extinguisher which is supported in its inoperative position by the vfusible links and which is constructed in a manner similar to the ordinary shape of portable fire extinguishers.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an extinguisher which when so desired may be removed from the supporting bracket in order that the same may be used as an ordinary portable extinguisher.
A further and. more specific object of the invention is to provide a fire extinguisher in which either a puncturable capsule or a bottle provided with a loose stopper is provided for containing the acid and preventthe same from mixing with the re.- mainder of the contents of the extinguisher.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a fire extinguisher which is provided with a valve, a spreader and a hose, the valve being arranged to control the flow of the liquid from the extinguisher either into the spreader or the hose.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, 1n which Figure 1 is a side view partly in section of a .fire extinguisher constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the same in its raised position.
Fig. 2 is a view illustrating the device in its lowered position.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the supporting bracket, and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing the acid container provided with a removable stopper.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view through the outlet showingthe detail structure of the valve.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the bodyof the extinguisher consisting of a hollow tank for containing the extinguishing liquid. This tank or body is rovided with a suitable screw threaded cap 2 carrying the cage 3 in which the acid container 4 is secured. A. suitable hook 5 is provided at one side of the body for cooperation with the fusible link which will be more fully hereinafter described. The lower end of the body is provided with a bead 6 which is retained on the hanger 7 by means of the upturned hooked end 8. This hanger 7 is formed centrally with the depending ears 9 which are apertured to receive a pivot end 10 which extends through the bracket 11 near its free end. This bracket 11 is adapted to be attached to a wall in any suitable manner and it will thus be seen that the same forms a shelf or support for the extinguisher as will be clearly seen upon reference to Fig. 1. Secured to the wall 12 on which the bracket 11 is supported is a hook 13 over which one end of the fusible link 14 is attached while the opposite end of said fusible link is connected to pierce the acid container i when the device swings downwardly as shown in Fig. 2 so that the head 17 strikes the wall 12. It will thus be seen that the device will be automatic in operation and when the fusible link 14 is destroyed the device will fall with such force as to cause the point 18 to pierce the acid container thereby allowing the acid and chemical contained within the tank 1 to intermix and allow the reaction thereof to form a pressure within the device which will force the contents out through the spreader or hose according to which way the valve is set.
Formed in the cap is a suitable threaded opening 19 into which the pipe 20 is. threaded on which the valve body 21 is connected. This pipe 20 is provided intermediate its ends with a valve seat 22 for cooperation with the ball valve 23 which when seated on the seat and when the device is in ts normal position prevent the evaporation of 6 the contents of the device. Thls valve is held from falling from posltion when the device is in its inverted position by the cage 24 which is spaced from the valve seat su ciently to allow the ball to be removed therevice ma freel flow into the valve body 21. This va ve bo y is provided with a longitudinal outlet passage 25 and a lateral outlet passage 26 and a suitable turning plug 27 provided with a transverse passage 28 having the branch passage 29 is provided which plug is fitted in the valve body in such a manner as to cause the passages to aline with those of the valve ody so that the liquid flowing from the tank may be directed either into the lateral or longitudinal passages of the valve body.
Connected to the end of the valve body 21 opposite that which is connected to the pipe 20 is the hollow stem 30 which terminates at its free end in a suitable frame or bracket 31. This frame is provided with the horizontal bar 32 and a suitablearcuate bar 33 which are formed centrally with the col- 30 lars 34 havin the shaft 35 journaled therein. This sha t carries the spreader 36 which is rotated when the device is. inverted by the outflowing fluid and as the same is positioned directly beneath the outlet opening 35 it will be apparent that the liquid striking the spreader will rotate the same and be thrown outwardly and scattered over a wide area. Should it be desired however, to use the device as a hand extinguisher the valve 40 plug 27 is turned so as to direct the liquid laterally into the openin 26 and a hose 37 is connected to the valve ody to receive the liquid passing through the opening 26 thereby enabling the device to be used as an ordinary hand extinguisher.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use should a fire occur in the immediate vicinity of the extinguisher and the same be charged and in a position shown in 5 Fig. 1 the fusible link 14: will be destroyed thereby allowing the device to swing downwardly into the position shown in Fig. 2 and in such a manner as to cause the head 17 to engage the wall 12 thereby puncturing the capsule containing the acid and starting the operation of the extinguisher. It will from in order that the contents of the dethus be seen that the liquid flowin out from the device will en age the sprea erand be thrown over a re atlvely wide area unless the same is used as a hand extinguisher at which time it is removed from its position in the clamp and bracket and may be carried ,to the desired point. It will be understood that when the device is used as a hand extinguisher the turning plug 27 is turned so that the opening 29 reglsters with the opening in the valve body which alines with the pipe 20 and the transverse opening 28 alines with the opening 26 in the valve body, so
that the liquid flowing out of the device will pass into the hose 37 which may be turned to direct the same to any desired point.
Should however the type of extinguisher illustrated in Fig. 4 be used it will be evident that instead of providing the plunger 16 the container for the acid is provided with a loosely fitting. plug and it will be ap parent that when the device becomes inshown and described the preferred embodi ment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit andscope of the appended claim.
