APPARATUS FOR DISCHARGING COKE-HOPPERS OR THE LIKE.
Application filed December 1'7, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR McDoUoALL Ducxrnmr, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in Ashstead, England, have invented a" certain new and useful Improved Apparatus for Discharging Coke- Hoppers or the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for discharging coke hoppers or the like in which the discharge chute is a cylinder rotating on its axis, the latter being inclined at an angle 'which permits the discharge of the coke, when the cylinder is set in rotation, but not when the cylinder is stationary. Owing to the rotation, the coke travels downward and is delivered without the breaking action which is inseparable from a worm conveyor. When the apparatus is for use in conjunction with a bucket or like conveyor, the latter drives the cylinder and there may be an intermediate revolving chute adapted to receive the coke and to discharge it into the conveyor bucket as they arrive in turn below the chute.
This construction is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as applied to two hoppers adapted to collect coke from gas retorts.
Figure 1 is an end elevation and Fig. 2 a side elevation.
The hoppers a are mounted in a frame Z) which runs on rails c at the sides of the conveyer pit. The inclined cylinder (Z which forms an extension of the lateral discharge opening of the hopper is mounted at its inner end on four rollers 6 carried by the hopper and at its middle on two rollers 7 carried by brackets on the framing. It is driven by a belt 9 from a pulley h itself driven from the conveyor chain 5 in the following manner.
The chain engages a toothed ring surrounding the cylinder (5 and provided with a bearing ring Z, whereby it is carried on three rollers m one mounted on brackets n on the hopper and the others on the bottom member of the framing. To the bearing ring is fixed an annular belt pulley 0 through which is driven the shaft of a gear wheel 2) engaging a toothed wheel on the shaft of the pulley h.
Coaxial with the toothed ring Z4 and fixed thereto is a drum Q having on its periphery five discharging months 7". The open ends of the drum are of suflicient diameter to Specification of Letters Patent.

admit the discharging ends of the cylinders (Z. This drum g acts as an intermediate chute and the pitch of the toothed ring it is such that as each discharging mouth '1" turns into its lowest position there is a bucket s in position to receive the coke.
Having thus described the said invention and the best means 1 know of carrying the same into practical elfect, I claim 1. Means for discharging coke hoppers, comprising, in combination, an inclined cylinder rotating on its axis and arranged to receive the coke from the hopper; a revolving discharge drum structurally separate from the cylinder and capable of rotation relative thereto, said drum being adapted to receive the coke from said cylinder; conveyor buckets arranged to pass beneath said drum to receive the coke discharged thereby; an actuating chain for said buckets; a toothed ring connected to said drum to rotate the same and engaging said chain to be driven thereby; and means including belting connecting said ring and said cylinder to drive the latter from the former.
2. Means for discharging coke hoppers, comprising, in combinatioman inclined cylinder rotating on its axis and arranged to receive the coke from the hopper; a revolving discharge drum structurally separate from the cylinder and capable of rotation relative thereto, said drum being adapted to receive the coke from said, cylinder; conveyer buckets arranged to pass beneath said drum to receive the coke discharged thereby; an actuating chain for said buckets; a toothed ring connected to said drum to rotate the same and engaging said chain to be driven. thereby; and means including belting connecting said ring and said cylinder to drive the latter from the former, said belting leading from said ring to a point remote from said cylinder and then back from such point to said cylinder.
3. Means for discharging coke hoppers, comprising, in combination, an inclined cylinder rotating on its aXis and arranged to receive the coke from the hopper; a revolving drum structurally separate from the cylinder and capable of rotation relative thereto, said drum being provided with an open end into which the discharge end of said cylinder projects, and also with peripheral discharge mouths; conveyer buckets arranged to pass beneath said mouths so as to receive the coke discharged therefrom; an actuating chain for said buckets; a toothed ring connected to said drum to rotate the same and engaging said chain to be driven thereby; and means including belting connecting said ring and said cylinder to drive the latter from the former.
l. Means for discharging coke hoppers, comprising an inclined cylinder rotating on its axis, a revolving drum adapted to receive the coke from the cylinder, said drum being structurally separate from said cylinder and capable of rotation relative thereto, conveyor buckets into Which the coke is discharged from said drum as they arrive in turn below the drum, a chain for actuating the conveyer buckets, a toothed ring loosely encircling said cylinder and engaging said chain to be driven thereby, a bearing ring on said toothed ring rollers for supporting the bearing ring, a belt pulley fixed to said bearing ring, a shaft driven by the belt pulley, and means for rotating the cylinder from said shaft.
In Witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. v
