Specification of Letters Patent.

Original application filed April 27, 1915, Serial No. 24,252. Divided and this application filed September 29, 1915. Serial No. 53,196.
1 '0. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD VARLEY, a
citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Englewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electrical Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an electrical system wherein a high tension flow or discharge of current is effected at a current using instrument-ality, such as a spark gap or the spark plug of a cylinderof an internal combustion engine; this case being a division of my application for Letters Patent of the United States, filed April 27th, 1915, Serial No. 24,252.
As such a system I aim for high efficiency in spark discharge or energizing of the'current using instrument, simplicity of con struction and arrangement and flexibility in control, in the provision of novel means comprising preferably a plurality oftransform ers, a source of current and means for bringing the transformers into and out of energizing circuit with the source of current and for controlling the operative discharges of said transformers, all as more fully set forth in the following description, which is addressed to those skilledin the art and in which reference is made to the accompanying drawings, which show ignition systems embodying my invention.
While I have shown my lnvention applied to an ignition system whereby the gaseous charges in the cylinders of an internal combustion engine may be exploded, 1t Wlll' be understood that the invention is not limited in use, but, on account of the advantages obtained thereby, it finds be apparent that many changes may be made in the construction and arrangement shown without departing from my invention.
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of an ignition system-embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing a manner of utilizing the magnetic flux of the transdesired embodimentin ignition. systems. It will also 7 view of a transformer unit showing modified manner of extending the legs of the trans former to constitute the magnetic core for the interrupter mechanism.
In Fig. l'the numerals indicate the cores of transformers 3 that correspond generally with the transformer disclosed Letters Patent No. 1,081,413, granted to me on December 16th, 1913; No. 1,103,385, granted to me July 2lth, 1914, and No. 1,112,177, granted tome September 29th, 1914, in that each transformer is provided with a pluralityof windings, herein indicated by the numerals t and 5, by means ofwhich a magnetic flux is caused to be built up in the core to prefer- I ably a supernormal state for energizing of a secondary winding 6, which is grounded and leads to a current using instrumentality,
such as a sparkplug (not shown) in the grounded at 14: and leads to switch contact 15. Connected in the battery circuit is vibrator 16 across the contact of which may be connected the usual condenser 16 Controlling the circuit of the winding 5 of each transformer is contact mechanism or aninterrupter comprising a fixed contact 17 and a movable contact 18, which latter contact is carried by an armature blade 19 arranged in attractive juxtaposition to a magnet core 20 the winding of which is in the circuit of the transformer wlnding 4, the connection preferably being in series,
asshown. A condenser 21 may be connected across the-contacts 17 and i8.
, The rollen timer mechanism 13 comprises a contact arm 22 that is geared to be driven in synchronism with theengine, as in the usual manner, and a plurality of segments 23 which connect with the windings 4 of the transformer. With the switch arm 'Z shifted to contact 13 for magneto connection, it will be apparent that. with driving by the engine of the generator 8 to produce a suitable alternating current, travel of the timer arm 22 into engagement with a segment 23 will close the circuit of the respective transformer winding 1, through grounds 21 and 12; setting up a flux in the core of the transformer unit. The circuit of the winding 5 is normally closed by the interrupter contacts 17 and 18, so that said winding acts as a choke upon the travel of the magnetic lines of force set up in the transformer core, causing a repression thereof from that particular portion of the core in such manner that, with sufficient source strength, the lines of force tend to take a leakage path intermediate the sides or legs of the transformer. As the current wave approaches or reaches its maximum point or period of flow, the core 20 of the interrupter mechanism 11 will be sufficiently energized, by reason of its winding being connected in the circuit of the winding r, to attract the armature 19 and separate contact 18 from contact 17, thus suddenly opening the circuit of the choke coil or winding 5., Opening of the circuit of this. winding 5 causes the repressed flux to assumeethe normal magnetic path of the core causing in the leg carrying the secondary winding6,amagnetic surge of great intensity which immediately builds up in the secondary winding 6 a voltage capable of instantly breaking down or bridging the gap of a spark plug or other device connected in circuit therewith. During the time when the roller timer arm 2'2 is in engagement with a segment :23. the winding 1 of the transformer remains in. ac tive circuit with the generator so that during and after the first disruptive movement of the flux in the core, the tendency is to maintenance of an active state of flux for prolonged energizing of the current using instrumentality. all as clearly set forth in my above mentioned Letters Patent No. 1,081,413.
By employing the roller timer 13 or other suitable contact mechanism for intermittently establishing the above mentioned circuit closure of the windings 4c, 1 provide means for bringing the transformer windings at and the interrupter mechanisms '11 into circuit with the source of continuous current or the battery 9. when the magneto connection is broken and the switch arm 7 is shifted to contact '15. As a resultof such switch connection the interrupter vibrator mechanism 16 is placed in active circuit with the battery so that it vibratorily responds to cause a pulsative flow of current from the battery through the transformer winding 4 when the roller timer arm 22 passes to a segment 23 and completes said battery circuit through grounds 23 and 14.
production.
Energizing of the winding 1, besides setting up a state of flux in the respective transformer in the manner already -de scribed; causes energizing of the interrupter mechanism 11 for opening of the circuit of the winding 5 and energizing of the spark plug or other current using device in the circuit of the respective secondary winding 6 as is understood: the interrupter 11-of each transformer being preferably lagged? slightly behind the vibrator 16 so that the choke coil circuit or winding 5 of any transformer is opened. before the is opened by means of the interrupter or vibrator 1G. i
In Fig. 2 I show a system corresponding with that shown in Fig. 1 (and like parts of which accordingly bear like reference numerals) with the exception that the auxiliary yibrator or current responsive interrupter mechanisms 11 are here shown as having their electromagnets forming part of the transformers. This isgpreferably done by extending from the transformer core a leg portion 27 carryn'igan energiz-f very few ampere turns of the winding are required. Furthermore, it provides a compact, self-contained arrangement. In this system shown in Fig. 2 it also will be noticed that the choke winding or control ling circuit 5 is disposed at opposite ends or sides of the secondary winding 6. 'This brings the 'secomlary winding into a more intimate and therefore influcntially receptive inductive relationship to the core of the transformer and operates to reduce the copper content or bulk of winding of both choke winding and secondary winding resulting in compactness and saving in cost of In lieu of extending the transformer" core in the manner shown in Fig. 2, to form a core25 for the magnet of tl'ieinterrupter mechanism. 1 may cause the rise'and fall of the flux in the main core of the transformer unit to actuate the interrupter blade or armature. Such an arrangement is shown in Fig. 3 the parts of which correspond to those of Fig. 2 and bear like reference numerals. In this system, the transformer core carries the armature blade 1 n such manner that it lies attractively ad acent the end of a-leg.
battery circuit with a primary winding,
and simplicity of mounting of the interrupter blade or armature.
Of course, the core of the transformer" may be extended'to form a magnetic core stantially closed magnetic circuit for lines of force set up by the winding t of the transformer.
Having thus described my invention, what I. claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v w
1; In electrical systems, a plurality of transformer units each of which is provided a secomlary winding inductively related thereto and a circuit controlling said inductive relationship, a current responsive interrupter for said circuit, a source of energy, and means for intermittently successively connecting the primary windings in circuit with the source of energy.
