JAMES A. MUIR, OF MORRISTOWN', NEW JERSEY.
BEATER-ROLL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1917.
Application filed January 9, 1917. ,SerialNo. 141.381.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. MUIR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Morristown, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Beater-Roll, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to paper pulp engines, and similar machines, and its ob ect is to provide a new and improved beater roll, which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to securely hold the blades in position and against bending, to permit convenient and quick replacing of a broken or otherwise injured blade by a new one, and to allow use of the blades until practically worn out down to the peripheral faces of the heads.
In order to accomplish the desired resul use is made of metallic heads held on a beater roll shaft and provided on their peripheral faces with registering dovetail grooves, blades having dovetail bases fitting the said grooves, wooden disks secured to the heads and having their peripheral faces flush with the peripheral faces of the heads, wooden fillet bars extending between adjacent blades and fastened to the said disks, and sets of superimposed reinforcing strips arranged between adjacent blades and removably fastened on the said fillet bars to allow of removing the outermost strips on the wearing down of the blades. A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the beater roll, on the line 11 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same on the line 2'2 of Fig. 1.
On the beater roll shaft 10 are keyed or otherwise secured a number of metallic heads 11 each provided at one side with a wooden support 12, preferably in the form of a disk fastened by bolts 13 or other fastening devices to the corresponding head 11. The peripheral face of each support 12 is flush with the peripheral face of the corresponding head 11 and the latter as well as the support 12 is provided with registering dovetail grooves 14:, of which the dovetail grooves of the several heads and their supports 12 are in transverse alinement with each other. Into the registering dovetail grooves 11 fit the base ends of beater roll blades 15 made wedge shape in cross section, as plainly indicated, in the drawings, and projecting a desired distance beyond the peripheral faces of the heads 11. In practice, the base ends of the blades 15 fit-sm'lgly into the dovetail grooves 11 so as to securely hold the blades in position without any special fastening devices.
Between adjacent blades 15 is fitted a fillet bar 20 made of wood and resting on the peripheral faces of the heads :11 and their wooden supports 12. and the said fillet bar 20 is fastened by nails or other fastening devices 21 to the wooden supports 12. The fillet bars 20 extend the length of the blades 15 and on top of each fillet bar 20 is arranged a set of superimposed reinforcing strips 22 of wood and fastened by nails or other fastening devices 23 one to the other and the lowermost one onto the fillet bar 20. It will benoticed that the reinforcingstrips 22 extend to. within a short distance from the outer ends of the blades 15 so as to strongly reinforce the said blades and to prevent the same from breaking. Vhen the blades are worn down then the outermost reinforcin stri 22 of each set of reinforcin permitting using up of the blades 15 until within a short distance of the peripheral faces of the heads 11.
When the beater roll is in use and any one of the blades 15 should become broken or otherwise injured then it can be readily driven endwise'out of position in the heads 11 and replaced by anew one without disturbing any of the other blades or the adjacent fillet bars 20 and superimposed sets of reinforcing strips 22.
The beater roll shown and described is very simple and durable in construction and can be cheaply manufactured.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A beater roll, comprising a shaft provided with heads having registering dovetail grooves, beater blades having dovetail bases fitting the said grooves, wooden sup- 10 fastened to the said heads and having ports fastened to the sides of the said heads, fillet bars fitting between the blades and fastened to thesald supports, and reinforcing strips fitting'between adjacent blades and re- 5 movitbly attached to the said bars."
2, A beater roll, comprising a shaft provided with beads having registering dovetail grooves, beater blades having dovetail bases fitting the said grooves, Wooden disks their peripheral faces flush with the peripheral Lamaze faces of the said heads, fillet bars each fitwermost of each set of
