Patenied kan. 9,1872.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM SHEPHERD AND ALFRED T. MURDEN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ALARMS FOR PORTABLE BOXES, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,540, dated January 9, 1872; antedated December 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM SHEPHERD and ALFRED T. MURDEN, of the city of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented and made a new aud useful improvement in Self-A cting Alarms for Portable Boxes, Snc.; and the following is declarcd to be a correct description of the same.
Valuable papers, bonds, money, and costly articles are frequently kept in tin boxes and other portable receptacles that can be easily stolen, and it frequently happens that these are carried away unobserved during business hours.
The object of this invention is to give an alarm immediately that said box or receptacle is lifted, and continue that alarm by the motion that results from carrying the saine; and our invention consists in a Weight mounted in eyes, so as to drop below the box when the same is lifted, and move the bell-hammer, in connection with a spring and stop, to limit the motion of the weight and prevent the hammer remaining in contact with the bell 5 and coinbined with the box and bell-striking mechanism we employ a spring varm and clapper, to keep up a tinkling as the box is moved in carrying the same. i
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a box in section, vertically, with my apparatus attached therein, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan below the line w x. y
l The box or receptacle a is of any desired character, and the bell bis affixed in the inside thercof. We have shown it as within the inclosure c. The weight d is mounted in eyes e e, so as to slide freely therein, vand beneath the end of such weight there is a hole in the bottom of the box to allow the weight to descend and protrude as the box is lifted. This movement of the weight d causes the arm f to swing and the hammer G to strike the bell, thus giving an alarm by the act of lifting the box. As an additional alarm we make use of a clapper, i, hung upon a delicate spring-arm, k, so that the movement of the box in carrying the same will produce a constant tinkling sound, which will aid in following a thief, and be an alarm until the box is allowed to remain quiescent. We have shown the spring o for the purpose of aiding the movement of the weight d, and the pin r arrests the weight, to prevent its descending too far, and also keeps the hammer from remaining in contact with the bell.
We are aware that a box has been fitted with a pin that passes out of ahole in the bottom of the box, and is actuated by a spring;
therefore we do not claim the same.
We claim as our invention- 1. The Weight el, mounted in the eyes e, and connected with the arm f of the hammer g, in combination with the spring o, pin r, box a, and bell b, the parts being arranged in the manner specied, so that the pin r arrests the movement of the weight for the purposes speeified.
2. The spring arm and clapper i, applied to and combined with the movable box, bell, and striking mechanism aforesaid, for the purposes set forth.
Signed by us this 21st day of April, A. D. 1871.
