LOUIS ARKIN AND SAMUEL ADELMAN, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
MOTION-PICTURE APPARATUS.
Application filed January 8, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LOUIS ARKIN and SAMUEL ADELMAN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Motion-Picture Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
-This invention relates to motion picture apparatus, and its object is to provide apparatus of this general character which can be very economically manufactured adapting it for use as a toy, advertising device, or the like. A further object of the invention is to provide apparatus of the kind specified which can be sold in knock-down and unassembled condition in a flat package suitable for mailing, and of such simple construction that it can readily be set up and assembled by persons without mechanical skill and even by children.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate an embodiment of the invention,-
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of the apparatus;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof;
Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of the box or casing showing opposite sides thereof;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank of which the casing is made;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the rotor with a picture secured thereto;
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the picture holding member;
Fig. 8 is a similar pictures;
Fig. 9 is a similar view of a drum head; and
Fig. 10 is a similar view of a fastener.
The box of easing A is made of any suitable inexpensive material, preferably cardboard, strawboard, or the like, and is formed from a blank of the shape and contour shown in Fig. 5, adapted to be folded as indicated in said figure. The said blank is provided with a tab or picture retarder A adapted to project into the box in the path of the pictures (Fig.- 1) and with apertures 1, 2, 3, 4.. When the blank is folded to form the casing, the apertures 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 register and the box is opened at its top and front providing a sight aperture.
When the blank has been folded into the view of one of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1917.
Serial No. 141,131.
The said drum or rotor consists of the picture holding member or strip O made of cardboard or other suitable material, having uniformly disposed picture holding slots 0 and mounted on the pair of metal drum heads D. Each of said drum heads is provided with projecting tabs or fasteners d, cut or split as shown, (Fig. 9), adapted to pass through the slots 0 in the strip C and thereafter to be bent and turned over in opposite direction removably to secure the strip and heads as clearly shown in Fig. 6.
E are the pictures provided as best shown in Fig. 8 with an integral locking tab E having a relatively long toe portion 0, pointed at its lower end, and a relatively shorter heel portion e cut away at its bottom.
In securing the pictures to the holding member or strip C, the locking tab E is held at an angle to the strip, and the toe portion 6 of the tab inserted its entire length into a slot 0 The picture is then swung upright so that the entire tab enters the slot 0 and is then slid in the direction of the heel portion e, i. 6., toward the right as viewed in Fig. 6, until said heel portion passes beyond the edge of the slot 0 whereupon the tab with its picture is securely locked in position as clearly shown in said Fig. 6.
When the drum has been assembled and the series of pictures mounted thereon in the manner just described, it is placed within the box or casing A with the slot apertures d of the drum heads D in register with the slot apertures b of the'fasteners B. A spindle F having a flattened portion 7 and a crank F is then passed through the apertures I) of the fasteners B and the slots 0 of the drum heads, the flattened portion f of the spindle fitting within the slot d of one of the drum heads. The spindle is thus detachably secured to said drum and j ournaled in the fastenersB.
It will be clear that the apparatus having been thus assembled as shown in Fig. 1, rotation of the crank F will rotate the drum with its series of pictures at the speed to produce the desired result, said pictures being viewed through the sight aperture formed by the open front and top of the casing and the necessary retardation of the individual pictures being provided by the inwardly projectin tab or retarder A.
A new series 0 pictures can readily be substituted either by removing and replacing the individual pictures or by the substitution of a new picture strip C, upon which the series of pictures has been mounted. The apparatus can be very economically manufactured and consequently sold at a price which permits its use as a toy, advertising medium or the like. Its parts are simple and can be readily assembled by anyone, and it can be safely mailed or otherwise transported in an envelop or other flat package, a great desideratum to its employment as an advertisement.
