Description
UNITED STATES ATEN FIE.
THEODOREA MINER AND JOSEPH G. MOODY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN MANUFACTURING POINTED TYPE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,531, dated J annary 9, 1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it .known that we, THEoDoRE MINEE and JOSEPH Gr. MOODY, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Type; and we do hereby declare that the fol-V lowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation ofa top view of an impression made by our type. Fig. 2 is a view through the line :l:
This invention has relation to the manufacture of type or dies having 'tine puncturingpoints for perforat-ing paper and other articles, as in canceling or marking checks, notes, 85e. 5 and it consists in the application to the production of such pointed type or dies of the electro-chemical process ot depositing metals in connection with a suitable matrix, as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawing, the letter A represents a matrix or mold formed on the original pattern ofthe letter or ligure to be copied.
B represents the layer or electro-metallic deposit as it lies in the mold. This deposit follows closely all the fine depressions of the matrix, forming the delicate perforating projections with a clean and perfect iinish if the mold has been properly formed. ln the same manner the grooved beard of the type or die may be formed where such is required. This lihn or plate bearing these fine perioratingpoints may be backed in any convenient manner suited to the object in view; or the mold may be left in the solution long enough to acquire a deposit of sufficient thickness to answer for the body ofthe type.
For the purposes of this invention the metal which is used to form the solution should be hard. Nickel or copper is preferred. The deposit should take place n cacao.
I am well aware that it is not new to make use of the electrotyping process to face cornmon type, and that pointed type have been made for perforating` purposes by liling out their faces; hence I do not claim, broadly, such invention; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A type or die having a perora-ting-face consisting of a number of line points or projections formed by electro-metallic deposits in a matrix, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two Witnesses.
THEODORE MINER.
Witnesses: JOSEPH G. MOODY.
