To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELVA B. ToWLnn, a resident of Macon, county of Macon, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Mountings for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in spring suspension for vehicles of various kinds, such as automobiles, carriages, wagons and the like.
The principal object of my invention is the provision of a spring construction whereby the body of the vehicle is resiliently supported on the running gear in such a manner that the transmission of shocks thereto and also rebounding is prevented, so that the vehicle rides comfortably and easily under all conditions.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and then sought to be defined in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof and which shows for the purpose of illustrative disclosure a preferred embodiment of my invention, it being understood that various changes may be made in practice within the scope of the claims without digressing from my inventive idea.

Fig. 2 is a disassembled perspective view of the spring construction showing the pivotal connections particularly.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the rear end of the supplemental springs showing the movable bearing within the frame.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the rear axle bearing.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the frame of the vehicle on which the body is supported in the usual way, the side members of the frame being preferably formed of channeliron. 2 designates the front axle and 8 the rear axle.
The main spring member a is of double curved or S-shape in formand connects the front and rear axles, being secured to the front axle by the usual clip 5 and pivotally connected to the two-part bearing member 6 on the rear axle, by means of bolt 7 passing through the eye thereof. This main spring 4 has a pivotal connection with the frame at the highest point of its first curve, which is provided by the bearing bracket 8 held thereon by clips 9 and the bracket member 10 secured to the frame 1 with the apertures 11 therethrough to receive the bolt 12 having the grease-cup thereon and openings therethrough for lubrication.
Another or supplemental double curved or S-shaped spring member 13 is pivotally connected as at 14 to the bearing member 6 on the rear axle and extends forwardly to an intermediate point on the frame 1, being connected thereto by clips 15.
An additional pair of spring elements or members 16 are pivotally connected to the main spring 4 and the supplemental spring 13 and having a slidable bearing on the side members of the frame 1. The bearing bracket 17 is secured to the main spring 4 by clips 18 and link 19 is pivotally connected thereto and to the eyes 20 in the ends of the spring elements 16. These spring. elements 16 are spaced apart to receive spring 13 therebetween and have bearing brackets 21 secured by clips 22 to an intermediate portion thereof. Bearing bracket 23 is secured by clips 24 to an intermediate part of spring 13, the brackets being apertured to receive bolt 25 having the grease cup and openings for lubrication.
These spring elements 16 therefore form levers with two pivotal points and have a sliding bearing on the frame, which is provided by the bracket 26 secured on the ends of spring elements 16 by clips 27 and have spaced ears 28 between which is journaled roller 29 which runs on the under surface of the channel iron side members of the frame.
It is to be noted that the body is supported by the spring construction at a plurality of points, one being a pivotal connection, one stationary and the other movable or sliding. The main spring extends from axle to axle and the supplemental and additional springs act when the strain and stress of compression and distortion are greatest, the additional spring 16 acting as a resilient lever. The supplemental and additional spring elements have a cross-wise or scissorslike movement.
The construction is simple and operates efficiently to resiliently support the body of the vehicle and provide easy riding qualities.
What I claim is 1. In combination with the frame and running gear of a vehicle, a main spring extending from the front to the rear axle, said main spring having a pivotal connection with said frame, asupplemental spring element connected to the rear axle and the frame, and an additional spring element pivotally connected to said main spring and to said supplemental spring and having a movable bearing on said main frame.
2. In combination with the frame and running gear of a Vehicle, a main spring extending from the front to the rear axle, said main spring having a double curve and being pivotally connected at the highest point of the forward curve with the frame, a supplemental spring element connected to the rear axle and extending forward therefrom and connected to the frame and an additional spring element pivotally connected to an intermediate part of said main spring and to an intermediate part of said supplemental spring element, said additional spring element having a movable bearing on said frame.
3. In combination with the frame and running gear of a vehicle, a main spring ex tending from the front to the rear axle, said main spring having a double curve and being pivotally connected at the highest point of the forward curve with the frame, a supplemental spring element connected to the rear axle and extending forward therefrom and connected to the frame, and a pair of additional spring elements spaced apart on opposite sides of said supplemental spring element and pivoted at one end to an intermediate part of the main spring and also having an intermediate pivotal connection with an intermediate part of said supplemental spring element, said additional spring elements having a movable bearing on said frame.

In combination with the frame and running gear of a vehicle, a main spring extending from the front'to the rear axle, said main spring having a double curve and being pivotally connected at the highest point of the forward curve with the frame, a supple mental spring element connected to the rear axle and extending forward therefrom and connected to the frame, and a pair of additional spring elements spaced apart on opposite sides of said supplemental spring element and pivoted at one end to an intermediate part of the main spring and also having an intermediate pivotal connection with an intermediate part of said supplemental spring element, said additional spring elements having a roller member mounted on their other ends and bearing against said frame.
5. In combination with the frame and running gear of a vehicle, a main spring extending from the front to the rear axle, said main spring having a double curve and being pivotally connected at the highest point of the forward curve with the frame, a supple mental spring element connected to the rear axle and extending forward therefrom and connected to the frame, and a pair of additional spring elements spaced apart on opposite sides of said supplemental spring element and pivoted at one end to an intermediate part of the main spring and also having an intermediate pivotal connection with an intermediate part of said supplemental spring element, said additional spring elements having a movable bearing on said frame, said supplemental spring element and said additional spring elements crossing each other and having a scissors-like movement.
6. In combination with a frame and running gear of a vehicle, a main spring extending from the front to the rear axle and connected thereto, said main spring having a pivotal connection with said frame, a supplemental spring element connected to the rear axle and to the frame at an intermediate point, and an additional element pivotally connected to an intermediate part of the main spring and to an intermediate part of the supplemental spring element; with its free end having a movable bearing on said frame.
7. In combination with a frame and running gear of a vehicle, a main spring extending from the front to the rear axle and connected thereto, said main spring having a pivotal connection with said frame, a supplemental spring element connected to the rear axle and to the frame at an intermediate point, and a pair of additional spring elements spaced apart and pivotally connected to an intermediate part of said main spring and to an intermediate part of said supplemental spring element and having a movable bearing on said frame.
8. In combination with a frame and running gear of -a vehicle, a main spring extending from the front to the rear axle and connected thereto, said main spring having a pivotal connection with said frame, a supplemental spring element connected to the rear axle and to the frame at an intermediate point, and an additional element pivotally connected to an intermediate part of the main spring and to an intermediate part of the supplemental spring element With its free end having a movable bearing on said frame, said supplemental spring element and said additional spring element crossing each other and having a scissors-like movement, and the movable bearing on the main frame of said additional spring element being lo cated substantially above the rear axle.
