Description

F. M. LAY.
STAKE HOLDER FOR VEHICLES.
APPLICATION FILED ocr. 3. me.
1x25 M50 Patented Ma 8, 1917.
UNITED srarns earner clarion FRANCIS M. LAY, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE JOHN DEERE WAGON COMPANY, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
STAKE-HOLDER, FOR, VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1917.
Application filed October 3 1916. Serial No. 123,511.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. Fuaxcrs M. LAY. a citizen of the United States. residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stake-Holders for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to devices employed to receive and firmly hold in place stakes such as are ordinarily employed on wagons, drays and similar vehicles to retain the load; and the object of my invention is to provide a stake holder of convenient form, strong and economical in construction, of sufficient height to be utilized as a stake, and in which stakes of various lengths can be held.
Referring to the drawings in which similar numerals indicate identical parts Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device secured to an end of a bolster.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
I have shown my holder as connected to a bolster 1, but it can be secured to a wagon. bed or the platform of a dray. The shell 2 of the holder is formed preferably of sheet metal and is rectangular in cross section with the outer side open. The shell 2 is rigidly secured, in this instance by rivets, to a block or castin 3 having an extended base 4 through whic and the bolster 1, a bolt 5 passes holding the block 3 rigidly in place. The upper end of the open side of the shell 2 is spaced apart by a block 6 riveted in place.
On opposite sides of the block 3 the shell 2 is spread at right angles at the bottom to form flanges 7 which are secured to the bolster 1 by bolts 8. Ring like members 9 are secured to the open side of the holder by the same rivets which attach the shell 2 to the blocks 3 and 6. A stake 10 is shown in use, its outer lower side out bevel so that the end of the stake can be solidly pressed or fitted into the socket formed by the block 3 and the shell 2. As previously stated the shell 2 is made of sheet metal, preferably steel, cut and pressed into shape, forming with the blocks 3 and 6 an economical holder of great strength.
The stake 10 is supplied commercially of various lengths, but it often occurs that a load of greater height is desired than the length of the stakes 10 will care for, in that event ordinary round stakes formed from any convenient timber such. as saplings, tree limbs or the like, of the desired length may be used and inserted in the ring like members 9. The ring like members 9, when not employed as stake holders, may also serve as a means to which a chain or rope can be connected and passed over the load from side to side of the vehicle to hold the load securely and prevent shifting.
The stake holder itself may be utilized as a stake with limited loads, as I have made it of sullicient height for that purpose, and to obviate the necessity ofhaving stake holders of different lengths, which is the ordinary commercial practice, so that only one size of holder is required, or carried in stock, less storage space is utilized, and the possibilities of selling materially increased.
What I claim is 1. A stake holder for vehicles comprising a shell having one side open, a block within the open side, means to secure said block and shell together to form a holder, and means to secure said holder to a vehicle.
2. A stake holder for vehicles comprising a shell having one side open, a block within the open side at the lower end thereof, a block within the open side adjacent the top thereof, means to secure both blocks and shell together to form a holder, and means to secure said holder to a vehicle.
3. A stake holder for vehicles comprising a shell having one side open and two opposite sides bent outwardly at the bottom to form a base, a block within the open side at the lower end having an outwardly eXtending portion to form a base, and means to secure said bases to a vehicle.
4. A stake holder for vehicles comprising a shell having one side open, means secured to the shell on the open side to form a holder, ring members secured to the open side of the shell in vertical alinement. and means to secure the holder to a vehicle.
5. A stake holder for vehicles comprising a shell having one side open, a block within the open side at the lower end thereof, a block Within the open side adjacent the top thereof, means to secure both blocks and Shell together, a ring member secured to the In testimony whereof I a'l'fix my signature, holder and extendmg outwardly of the lower 111 presence of two \vltnseses.
block a ring member secured to the holder FRANCIS M. LAY. adjacent the upper block, both rings being \Vitnesses:
5 in vertical alinement, and means to secure JESSIE SmrsmR,
the holder to a vehicle. W. G. DUFFIELD.
