TEST-DRILL To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that 1, AMAN G. Erop-seran, a citizen oi' the United States, residing at Breaux Bridge, in the-parish ot' St. Martin and State oi' Louisiana, have invented new and useful improvements in Test-Drills, et which the following is a specilication.
rThis invention relates to an improved device which may be properly called al test drill and which is utilized for obtaining specimens of soil formation at various depths when drilling prospect holes, oil wells and the like.
rl`he invention has for its object to produce av simple and improved device which may be operated at the end of a string of pipe, the same as an ordinary drill, butA the said device being adapted to take specimens of the soilformation at any depth and to inclose the same so that said specimens will be preserved without contamination while being elevated to the surface of the ground.
A further object ot the invention is to produce atest drill having a valve equipment enabling it to be washed and cleansed thoroughly before taking` the desired specimen, being thereby free from any substances which may have accumulated therein' during the descent into the hole.
A; .further objectief the invention is to simplify and improve the construction of the valve equipment which forms a part of the device.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the inventioir'isf better understood, the same consists/in theimproved construction and novel arrangement and.. combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly7 pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred 'form of the invention, it being, however, understood that. no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but vthat changes, alterations and modificaA tions within the scope of the claims may `be vresorted to when desired.'

One side wall of the slot 21 in the outer vtube 17 is bent outward and sharpened to form a cutting or scraping member 22 whereby, when the device is rotated about its vertical axis, material may be scraped or forced through the slots 21, 20 into the compartment or receptacle formed by the inner tube. lower and upper ends, said upper end portion being, however, provid-ed with an axial aperture 23.
The outer tube 17 is externally threaded at its upper end tor engagement with a collar 24, said collar receiving at its upper end a tubularnipple having bleed holes 26, said nipple being connected at its upper end with the string ot pipe, a portion of which is seen at 27.
The said tube is closed at its i and the nipple 23 and also l'or the reception which extends an axial threaded stem 2f! on which the said plug may be regarded as being adjustably mounted; that is to say, by rotating the said stem relative longitudinal axial adjustment of theI stem andtheplug may be eti'ected. Valve disks 30. -ll are seated on the top and bottom faces ol the plug 2S, the upper valvefdisk being seated gravitationally and the lower valve disk being held seated by means ot' a spring $32 coiled about the stem 25') and abutting at its lower end on a stop member,-sueh as a nut 33. A guide pin 3l; extends through the plug' with which.it is h'xedly connected and through the respective valves which are thereby prevented vlrom turning about the axis of the stem 2f). 'lhe plug` is provided with ports or apertures 35, 2%(3 that register, respectively. with ports or apertures 37, B8 in Vthe uppe' and lower valve disks il() and 231. lt will thus lieI seen that while the port in the top disk il() constantly communicates with the upper end olE the port 35, the lower end ot said port 35 is obstructed by the bot tom valve disk ol, while on the other hand the port 38 in the bottom valve disk is constantly in communication with the port 36, the upper end ot which is obstructed by the upper valve disk. Access to the interior ot the tube 1G through the aperture Q3 at the upper ,1d thereof may thus be regarded as being normally obstructed by the valve device just described.
In the use ot the improved device, it is connected with the lower end of a string of' pipe that is used lor drilling purposes, and when the bottom ot the hole is reached and the bit l5 has become partly embedded. the outer tube 17 is turned in the proper direction to bring the slots Q0, 2l into registry. The drill hole is now to be cleansed trom the impurities which may have accumulated at the bottom. thereof, and this is etlected by injecting liquid under pressure through the drill pipe, the pressure being sullicient to cause the valve 3l to open against the tension of the spring 82, the injection of liquid being continued until the hole is clean. This, of course, will leave liquid standing in the lower portion ot' the drill pipe, below the valve device, and particularly within the tube 16. The drill is now started and by the operation thereot' the material loosened by the drill is scooped by the cutter or scraper 22 through the slots 20, 2l into the compartment formed by the inner tube 1G, the liquid contained lin said tube and in the lower portion of the drill tube being displacedv upwardly through thel aperture 38 in the lower valve disk 3l and through the port IBG, the gravitationally seated upper valve disk 30 yielding to the upward pressure oli the liquid which is'being displaced. then the operator judges that a sutl'icient quantity ot' specimen stutf has been accunmlated within the tube '16, the rotation of the drill tubing is reversed, causing the outer tube 17 to rotate; bout the tube le in the proper direetion to close the opening in the wall thereotf. rl`he drill may now be withdrawn -trom the drill hole, and as it is being withdrawn the valve device will elfectually obstruct communieation between the compartlnent t'ormed by the tube lt and the tubing above the same. A-ny water or liquid contained in the drill tubing will escape through the bleed holes 2G, thus enabling an i|montaminated specimen to be obtained.
In'the drilling ol oil wells and other wells it is extremely desirable and important to obtain specimens of soil formation at various depths, especially when an oil or mineral bearing stratum is reached, in order that lurthe'r operations, such as the setting and location ol screens, the determining ot the mesh of said screens and other matters may be decided with a view to bringing about the most successful results. By the improved device an exact and uncontaminated specimen of the 'soil formation at any detern'iined depth may be obtained, thereby atl'ording a safe guide to the operator for l'urther proceedings.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

In a device ofthe class described, an inner tube carrying a bit, an outer tube in which the inner tube is mounted for limited rotary movement, and a stop member limiting such rotary movement and preventing the relative .longitudinal movement of the inner and outer tubes, said tubes having longitudinal slots which by partial rotation of one tube may be placed in and out of registry, a side wall of the outer tube being provided with a projecting cutting and scraping member.; in combination with a valve device supported above the outer tube, said valve device being adapted to permit passage of liquid under pressure upwardly and downwardly.
Q.ln a device of the class described, a valve device comprising a plug having two ports extending vertically therethrough, a stem on which the plug is mounted, valve disks seating on the two ends of the'plug and having apertures alining with the respective ports, a guide pin extending through the plug and the valve disks to prevent axial rotation ofthe latter, and a spring whereby the bottom valve is normally held/// stem on which the plug is mounted, valve disks seating on the tivo ends of the plug and'having apertures alining With the respective ports, a guide pinextending through the plug and the valve disks to preventaxial rotation of the latter, and a spring ivlufrebyI the bottom valve is normally held seated, the axial stem lbeing longitudinally adjustable with respect to the plug.
4. ln a device et' the class described, a valve device comprising a plug having two portsI attending vertically therethrough, a stein! on which the plug is Amounted, valve disks 'seating on the tv'vo ends of the plug and having apertures alining withV the respective ports, a guide pin extending through the plug and the valve disks to prevent axial rotation ot the latter, and a spring whereby the bottom valve is normally held seated, the axial stem `being in threaded engagement with the plug for longitudinal adjustment with respect thereto, and said stem being provided with a stop member forming an abutment for an actuating spring for the bottom valve.
5. ln a device of the class described, an inner tube carrying a bit, an outer tube in which the inner tube is fitted for rotation., said outer tube having diametrica-lly opposed slots, a stop pin extending through the in -1 ner tube and engaging the slots to limit the rotary movement of the inner tube, said inner and outer tubes having longitudinal. slots that may be placed in and out of registry by rotary movement of one tube, a nipple having bleed openings, a collar con-- necting the nipple with the outer tube, a valve device housed in the collar, said valve device comprising a plug having vertical ports extending therethrough, valve disks seated on the top and bottom faces of the plug and having apertures registeru ing with the respective lports, means Whereby rotary movement of the valves Will be prevented, and a spring wherebyA the bottom valve is normally maintained in seated condition. y
