THREAD-CUTTER.
that the thread cutter may be used to sever threads connected with the bobbins on the lifter plate after the bobbins have been ,dofied.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a thread cutter of the class described which is so constructed that at the beginning of the dofling of the bobbins, the cutter may be operated to knock from the bobbins, the drag washers associated therewith and after the bobbins have been dofi'ed, the threads connected therewith may be severed close to the bobbins so that no long ends are left upon the threads on the bobbins which would have a tendency upon the bobbins reaching the loom to cause the bobbins to hang before the thread hasbeen run 0E of the same.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, al-
terations, and modificationswithin the scope of the claims maybe resorted to when so desired.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings, in which:

showing the improved thread cutter applied to the bobbin lifting plate thereon.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the bobbin lifting plate removed from the spinning machine'and showing the washer plate on the thread cutter in an inactive position.
Fig. 3 isa view similar to Fig. 2 showing the washer plate on the thread cutter in active position. I
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 on the line 66 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates a portion of an end of a spinning machine with which is shown connected a portion of the bobbin dofling mechanism 2 having connected therewith a spindle rail 3 arranged below a bobbin lifting plate 4 adapted to have connected therewith the usual plate raising and lowering mechanism (not shown in the drawing), said lifter plate having passing there through and through the drag washers 5 thereon, spindles 6 mounted upon the spindle rail 3 and having connection with fliers 7 between the arms of which are arranged the bobbins 8 seated upon the drag washers 5 and having passing therethrough the spindles 6.
Connected with the bottom face of the bobbin lifting plate 4 at spaced intervals throughout its length are spaced. brackets 9 having heads 10 thereon extending beyond one side edge of the bobbin lifting plate 4: and provided with hearing openings 11 in which is mounted for turning movement a sleeve 19, extending-the entire length of the bobbin lifting plate 4 and spaced above the -upper face of saidplate by the 'heads lf),
said sleeve having formed therein at intervals throughout its length circumferentially arranged slots 13 and has connected therewith a plate 14 extending the entire length of the sleeve and adapted to be brought into contact with the drag washers beneath the bobbins 8 in a manner presently described,
said sleeve having formed therein near one end an elongated and longitudinally eXtend ing slot 15.
Arranged within the sleeve 12 and extending the entire length thereof is a tubular cutter rod 16 one end of which extends beyond an end on the sleeve 12 and is provided with a loop 17 forming a hand hold by means of which the cutter rod may be slid longitudinally of the sleeve 12 to cause spaced and alined slots 18 in the peripheral surface thereof to pass beneath the alined slots 13 in the sleeve 12 so that when the slots 13 and 18 are in registration and the cutter rod 16 is slid longitudinally of the sleeve 12 in either direction, the side walls of the slots 13 and 18 act as cutting blades.
Extending laterally from the cutter rod 16 near the loop 17 is a pin 19 one end of which is received in the slot 15 in the sleeve 12, said pin limiting the sliding movement of the cutter rod 16 within the sleeve 12 and also enabling the sleeve 12 to be turned in the heads 17 by the cutter rod 16 to cause the plate 14 to be brought into contact with the drag washers 5 beneath the spindle 6, so that the drag washers may be knocked from the bottom of the bobbins at the beginning of the clotting of the bobbins or held upon the bobbin lifting plate after the bobbins have been doflied.
Through the provision of the tubular sleeve 12 and cutter rod 16, it will be seen that an extremely strong construction of thread cutter is provided which is not likely to bend or twist while in use and adds no unnecessary weight to the bobbin lifting plate of the spinning machine.
When the improved thread cutter is connected with the bobbin lifting plate of a spinning machine as shown in Fig. 1 in the drawings, the cutter may be used to knock the drag washers from the bobbins at the beginning of the doiling of the same or to cut the thread connected therewith after the bobbins have been doffed in the following manner:
When a series of bobbins 8 have been filled with thread, the spinning machine is stopped and the sleeve 12 oscillated in the heads 10 by means of the cutter rod 16 to cause the plate 14 to be brought into contact with the bobbins 8 so that when the mechanism (not shown in the drawing) connected with the bobbin lifting bar for lowering the same is operated to lower the bobbin lifting plate, the drag washers 5 may be simultaneously knocked from the :bottom of the bobbins and held upon the bobbin lifting plate by the plate 14 as the bobbin lifting plate and the spindle rail are moved to their lowermost position.
Prior to the placing of the series of empty bobbins upon the bobbin lifting plate, the
With the improved thread cutter in the position described, it will be seen that the series of empty bobbins may be placed on the bobbin lifting plate and the bobbins moved to their normal position and the spindles connected with the fliers 7 so that the thread may be started upon the empty bobbins by suitable setting on mechanism (not shown).
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is at once apparent that a thread cutter for spinning machines has been provided which will not only cut the threads connected with dofl'ed bobbins in an efficient manner but may also be used to knock the drag washers from the bobbins at the beginning of the dofiing operation and to hold the said washers upon the bobbin lifting bar until the clotting operation is completed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. In a device of the class described, in combination, a bobbin lifting plate, a thread cutter connected with said bobbin lifting plate, and a washer engaging plate on said thread cutter.
2. In a device of the class described, in
combination, a bobbin lifting plate, a rota table thread cutter connected with said bobbin lifting plate, and a washer engaging plate connected with the thread cutter.
3. In a device of the class described, in combination, a bobbin lifting plate, a sleeve connected with said plate for turning movement, a washer engaging plate carried by said sleeve, and a cutter rod connected with the sleeve for turning the same.
4. In a device of the class described, in combination, a bobbin lifting plate, a sleeve rotatably connected with said bobbin lifting plate, a washer engaging plate carried by said sleeve, and a cutter rod for turning said sleeve mounted to slide therein.

In a device of the class described, in connection with the sleeve to enable the combination, a bobbin lifting plate, brackets same to be turned by the cutter rod, and an connected with said plate, a sleeve mounted operating handle on said cutter rod.
