IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,480, dated January 2, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. MORRIS, of Harrisonville, in the county of Cass and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Oar-Oouplin gs;
coupling and uncoupling takes place, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
To enable those herein skilled to make use my said improvements, I will now more fully describe the same, referring to the accompanying Figure l as a side elevation; to Fig. 2 as a top plan; to Fig. 3 as a transverse section at line m The draw-heads A A' are cast or constructed to receive the links and coupling-bars, as follows: The draw-head A is simply cast slotted for the reception of the link, B, which has a slot, b, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The said link is ,properly bolted in the draw-head A. The slotted link B has its forward bar b' beveled or curved to a point to effect amore ready rIhe draw-head A' is constructed slotted to Vreceive a guide-link, C, and coupling-bar D. The guide-link C is an extension bar, cast or bolted within the draw-head A', its extension part being deflected at c (see Fig. l) to guide the link B into coupling engagement. The coupling is effected by the coupling-bar l), which is pivoted at d in the slot of the draw-head A'. The said coupling-bar D is formed with an enlarged head, D', which is further formed to terminate into a hook, d', to catch or couple with the forward bar b of the link B, as illustrated in Figs. l and 2. Further, the head D' of the coupling-barD is curved inward at its face, as at E, Figs. l and 2, so that its hook d' will readily slide up and over into lock with the link B as soon as the cars come in contact with each other. To enable the coupling thus achieved to disengage itself' the inner sides of bars e c' of the link B are wedgeshaped. (See Figs. 2 and 3.) Similarly the head D' of the coupler proper has its side faces beveled or inclined. (See Figs. l and 3.) Any great lateral displacement of the car, as in cases of emergency, the said incline surfaces will effect an automatic disconnection. To uncouple from the platform or top ofthe car the coupling-link D is operated by a lever, F. rIhe lever F is bent to operate in a side slot, f, of the draw-head A', and is pivoted at f'. Further, the bent part of said leveris made to engage against the under side of the couplingbar D, so as to raise the same. To return the coupling-bar D to operative position a suitable spring, G, is secured to the top of the drawhead, the operation of the lever and its parts being clearly illustrated in Fig. 1.
My said improved car-coupling in construction is simple and cheap, requiring less work and material, and in operation practically effective, safe, and efficient for its purposes Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
A car-coupling, consisting of the draw-heads A A' provided with link B, guide-bar C, and coupling-bar D, all constructed, combined, and arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
