and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others, skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. p
My invention is an improved type of tamp designed primarily for packing cement in a block forming mold although the applica tion of the machine need not be limited to this use since it may obviously be employed for other purposes as occasion may demand.
The main object of the invention is to provide a machine of the class described which may be easily and inexpensively manufactured and operated yet which regardless of these characteristics willbe highly eflicient and durable.
A further object is to provide novel means for securing the tamp bars in raised position and for elevating said bars above thisposition to allow the operating means therefor to run idly.
With the foregoing general objects in view, the invention reside'sin certain novel features of construction and in unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptivematter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which constitutea part of this application, and in which t Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved tamp;

In specifically describing the structure shown in the drawings above briefly described, similar characters will be placed on corresponding parts throughout the several views and reference will be herein made to the numerous elements by their respective indices. To this end, the numeral 1 designates a suitable frame which preferably comprises a pair of front standards 2, rear standards 3, a base 1 from which said standards rise, horizontal bars 5 secured at their ends to the front and rear standards, upper and lower horizontal bars 6'whose ends are secured in any preferred manner to the standards 2, and suitable braces for imparting the necessary rigidity to the frame. The bars 6 have formed therein vertically alined openings in which upright rectangular tamp bars 7 are slidably mounted, links 8 being pivoted at their lowerends to said bars 7 at suitable points. The upper ends of the links 8 are pivotally connectedto the front ends of a plurality'of levers 9 fulcrumed between their ends on a shaft 10 extending between the horizontal bars 5, the rear ends of said levers 9 being disposed in the paths of tappets 11 on tappet wheels 12, said wheels being mounted nonrotatably on a shaft 13 which may be driven in any preferred manner, said shaft preferablyhaving thereon a spur gear 141- meshing with a pinion 15 on a shaft 16, the latter being provided with a pulley 17 over which a belt will be run from a motor. The tappets are arranged in any suitable order and as they are successively brought into engagement with the rear ends of the levers 9, these levers will be rocked and then released to respectively raise the tamp bars 7 and permit the latter to drop by gravity. Said bars 7 are provided with any preferred type of feet 18 for engagement with the material being tamped.
For the purpose of locking the bars 7 in raised position, a plurality of locking members 19 are pivotally mounted on a shaft 20 whose ends are supported by the standards 2 through the instrumentality of brackets 21 secured to said standards The members 19 are provided with dogs 22 disposed in rear of the bars 7 and adapted for cooperation with shoulders 23 on said bars. The members 19, however, are normally rocked rearwardly to dispose the dogs 22 to inoperative position by weights 24.
Arms 25 extend forwardly from the members 19 and are connected with the upper ends of coil springs 26 from which chains or other suitable cable members 27 depend. The lower ends of the chains 27 are connected to arms 28 which rise from one or more rock shafts 29, two of such shafts being shown in the present embodiment of the invention. The shafts 29 may be mounted in any desired manner but bearing brackets 30 are preferably secured to the standards 2 for this purpose. The shafts 29 are provided with hand levers 31 to which toothed bars 32 are pivoted, said bars being adapted for cooperation with suitable stops 33 which project laterally from one of the standards 2 whereby said shafts may be locked in numerous positions.
When the shafts 29 stand as shown in Fig. 1, the locking members 19 will be in inoperati've position with the result that the tamp bars 7 may rise and fall uninterruptedly. When, however, the levers are forced clownwardly and held in the position depicted in Fig. 3, the flexible connections between the arms 28 and 25 will rock said members 19 to dispose their dogs 22 in the upward path of the shoulders 23. The result of this is that as the bars 7 are raised, they will be held against descending by said dogs. It is obvious that since the levers 9 have raised the bars 7 to the position in which they are now held, that said levers will not be totally clear of the tappets 11. It is therefore essential to provide simple means for further elevating said bars to dispose the rear ends of the aforesaid levers below the path of said tappets.
For accomplishing the last named result, arms 34 extend from the rock shaft 29 in the opposite direction from the arms 28, said arms 34 being adapted to be positioned beneath pins or the like 35 when the levers 31 are moved to the position shown in Fig. 1 with the bars 7 in raised position, said pins 35 extending laterally from these bars as shown. The relation of parts issuch as to cause the arms 34 to engage the pins 35 before the levers 32 reach the location shown in Fig. 4, the result being that when said levers are further moved, the bars 7 will be raised sufliciently to permit the tappets 11 to clear the levers 9. This is advantageous when filling the mold which will be disposed below the feet 18 or when removing the completed block from said mold. By operating only one of the levers 31 in the manner just described, and by permitting the other to remain in the position shown in Fig. 1, certain of the tamp bars will be thrown out of operation while the others will continue to rise and fall.
For limiting the downward movement of the levers 9 a bar 36 extends beneath the front ends of said levers and is yieldably supported by springs 37 between brackets 38 mounted on the rear sides of the standards 2. This insures that the tamp bars 7 may nottravel downwardly to such an extentas to permit the levers 9 to be improperly p0- sitioned for engagement by the tappets 11.
In the foregoing, I have described a plurality of bars 7, levers 9 and other parts cooperating with said bars and levers, but
in certain forms of the invention, it will be understood that but one tamp bar need be used and consequently the other working parts of the machine will be reduced in number accordingly. The machine whether constructed in this manner or as illustrated, will be highly efficient and durable yet it may be inegpensively manufactured and easily operate For illustrative purposes, I have shown certain specific details of construction and have herein described the same, but it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made without sacrificing the main advantages thereof.
I claim 1. A tamp comprising an upright tamp bar, means for successively raising said bar and releasing it, a normally idle locking member for holding said bar in raised position, a rocking member having a laterally extending arm, a yieldable connection between said arm and said locking member for applying the latter when said rocking member is moved to a predetermined position, and means on said rocking member and bar for elevating the latter above the highest position to which it is moved by its operating means, when said rocking member is further turned to a second predetermined position.
2. A tamp comprising an upright tamp bar, means for successively raising said bar and releasing it, a normally idle locking member for holding said bar in raised position, a rocking member having a laterally extending arm, a yieldable connection between said arm and said locking member for applying the latter when said rocking member is moved to a predetermined position, a second arm extending laterally from said rocking member, and a projection on the tamp bar to be engaged by said second arm when said rocking member is further turned to another predetermined position, whereby to elevate said bar above the highest level to which it is movedby its operating means.
