Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 23, 1916. Serial No. 127,231.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MOOONAIIY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellwood City, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, "have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut- Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved nut lock and has for its primary object to provide, as an improved article of manufacture, a very simple device whereby the nut may be easily, quickly and securely looked upon the bolt.
It is a more particular object of the invention to provide an article of the above character stamped or cut from a single piece of malleable metal to produce a circular looking disk integrally connected at one side to the outer annular portion of the plate which serves as a washer, said disk being adapted to be bent inwardly against the side face and over the end face of the nut.
It is a further general object of the invention to provide an article for the above purpose which may be manufactured in large quantities at relatively low cost and can be easily and quickly applied in operative position or disengaged from the nut when it is desired to remove the latter.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved nut lock in its applied position;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof;
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the plate provided with a plurality of the locking devices; and
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the nut locks before it is applied to the bolt.
Referring in detail to the drawing and more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 4 thereof, 5 designates the outer annular portion of the device which serves as a washer. The central portion of the plate, indicated at 6, which is of substantially circular form, is integrally connected at one side to the annular washer plate 5, as shown at 7. The washer plate 5 and the locking disk 6 may be stamped or cut out in one operation from a sheet of malleable metal, and the locking disk .6 is projected from the plane of the washer plate 5 to normally extend substantially at right angles thereto.
In the use of the device, the annular Washer plate 5 is engaged over the projecting end of the bolt, indicated at B, and the nut N is then threaded upon said bolt against the face of the washer plate, the latter being clamped tightly against the object through which the bolt extends. The locking disk 6 is then bent over against the side face of the nut and the edge portion of said disk, opposite the integral connection 7 of said disk to the washer plate, is bent over upon the end face of the nut, as shown at 8 in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Thus, the nut will be securely, held against retrograde turning movement on the bolt and prevented from working off the same.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing, I have shown a multiple form of nut lock particularly designed for use in connection with the bolts of a rail joint. In this construction, the locking disks 6 are stamped out from the malleable metal plate 9 in spaced relation to each other, and through the openings thus provided in said plates, the ends of the spaced bolts are engaged, the plate 9 being disposed against one of the joint fish plates. The several looking disks 6 are then bent over upon the respective nuts in the manner above explained.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of use and several advantages of the invention will be clearly and fully understood. The locking device can be easily and quickly applied in its operative position, and when it is desired to remove the nut from the bolt the locking disk 6 may be readily bent outwardly away from the nut by striking the end portion 8 thereof several blows with a hammer or sledge. While my improved nut lock is exceedingly simple in its construction, it is, nevertheless, very effective in practical use. The device can also be very quickly manufactured.
While I have shown and described the preferred form and construction of the several features of my improved nut lock, it is to be understood that the same are susceptible of considerable modification therein and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is As an improved article of manufacture, a combined washer and nut lock stamped from malleable metal and consisting of a substantially circular locking disk integrally connected to the inner edge of an annular washer plate at one side and normally disposed out of the plane of said washer plate and substantially at right angles thereto,
said washer plate being adapted for arrangement upon the bolt and held in position by the nut threaded thereon, and said locking disk being adapted to be bent over upon the side and end faces of the nut and hold the same against turning movement with respectto the bolt.
