To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. KLInR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galva, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Belt Guides and Shifters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for belt guides and shifters and the principal object of the invention is to provide an attachment for use in connection with the guid and shifter illustrated and described in my co-pending application filed March 11, 1916, Serial Number 83,602.
Another object of the invention is to provide a belt guide and shifter which is adapted to move the belt both onto and off from a pulley wheel.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an attachment for the belt shifter which remains in the same angular relation with the boiler of the engine on which the device is used regardless of the position of the belt shifter. 1
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a boiler showing the belt guide and shifter in place, and illustrating the same having the attachment applied thereto,

Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 1,
Fig. A is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the belt guide and shifter in its innermost position, and illustrating the relative position of the attachment,

Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view partly in section taken on line 66 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the boiler of an ordinary traction engine surrounded by the attaching band 2 of the belt shifter. This attaching band carries the attaching plate 3 to the forward end of which is pivoted the supporting plate t. A suitable rod 5 is journaled on the plate 3 and is formed with the arm 6 which extends laterally therefrom and is connected at its end by the link 7 to the plate A as clearly shown in Fig. 1. A similar arm 8 is formed at the lower end of saidrod and has connected thereto the bifurcated end of the operating rod 9, by means of which the device is shifted. A suitable frame 10 is adjustably mounted on the plate 4 and carries the arms 11 at its outer end between the ends of which is journaled the roller 12 forming the belt guide. It will thus be seen that upon longitudinal movement of the rod 9 the free end of the frame and the roller 12 may be moved inwardly or outwardly with relation to the boiler 1. As illustrated in Fig. 1 th lowermost arm 11 is provided with a forward extension 13 for supporting the attachment which will be more fully hereinafter described.
The attachment above referred to consists of a bar 15 which is pivoted as at 16 to the ear 13, and mounted at the forward end of this bar is a suitable enlargement 17 forming a support for the lower end of the bolt 18 on which the roller 19 is mounted. As shown in the drawings the roller 19 extends in a plane parallel to the roller 12 and the belt passes between said rollers when the device is in use. A suitable ear 20 extends upwardly from the bar 15 near the point where it is pivoted and this ear coiiperates with the enlargement 17 in supporting the axle 21 of the roller 22, which roller extends horizontally at right angles to the plane of the roller 19 and forms a support for the lower end of the belt when the device is in use. The rear end of the bar 15 is provided with an opening 23 through which the cylindrical extension 24: of the stud 25 projects.
This extension is provided with the head 26,
and it will thus be seen that the stud will have a swivel mount in said bar. The stud is formed with a transverse opening 27, through which the connecting rod for controlling the movement of the attachment extends as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Pivoted at 28 to the plate 4: is the bell crank designated generally by the numeral 29, the short arm of which is provided with a plurality of spaced openings through which the hooked end of the link 31 connects. The opposite terminal of said link is pivoted as at 32 to the plate 3 and it will thus be seen that upon swinging movement of the plate A the bell crank will also be swung. The long end of the bell crank desconnecting rod and are adapted to be tightened against the op osite sides of the stud 25 to avoid any acci ent'al moveme'nt of the stud on the connecting rod.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use upon swinging movement of the plate t'the bell crank 29 will movethus causing the rod 35 to swing the bar 15 on its pivot so that 'regardlessof the positionof the'plate with relation to the boiler 1, the attachment and the roller 22 will remain at all times in a plane at right 'anglesto the longituclinal'axis'of the boiler. In this way it will be seen that any possibility of the binding of the belt between the rollers*19 and 12"wil1 be avoided, and yet the movement of thebelt onto and off from the live pulley of the engine may be readily facilitated.
While in the foregoing there hasbeen shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention,'it istO'be "understood'that suchminor changes may be 'made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will-fall withinthe spirit and scope ofthe appended claims.
