CHARLES A. REIN'NAU, OF KANNIBAL, MISSOURI. ASSICNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN W.
GBIPPiNG-TOOL FOR rAcKnm RINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent Application filed November 2, me. serih.1i .12-,zo4. I I c To all whom it may concern: 1
. Be it known that .l, (luau-1s A. RI'JNSAU,
acitizen of the United States, residing at Hannibal, in the county of Marion and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gripping-'lools for Packing-Rings, of which the follmvingis a full, clear, and exact description, ret'erenee being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in gripping tools for packing rings;
andit consists in the novel features of construction more fully set forth in the specifieationand pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a tool by means of which a iistomhead packing ring of the resilient split-band type may be-scizedor gripped and deposited in the piston'hjead groove designed to receive the same after which the piston with its ring maybe readily insertcd or' pushed into the cylinder with a 'rninimun'i loss of time and a mininnnn'anionnt of iii-.tnipnlation. A i i'ovide a tool oi? the able to the ,size of ring desired; one which will dump the ring firmly to the piston;
} one fromlivhich the piston with its ring may be quickly turned from the tool into'the.
cylinder, and one possessing further and otherj ndvan'tages better apparent from the following detalleddescription of the invention in connection with the aceon'ipanying drawings. in which- Figure .1 represents a perspective of a multiple gasolene engine cylinder showing in iilwenti-onappligcd thereto; a plan a split-hand; packing ring showing the application off ny gripping tool thereto-4wfol'e the same has been contracttal: Fig, 3 is a n lar view showing the tool In gr|p- -,pi-r glor contracted position and showing, the
ti'onal packing closed;- Fig. 4 is an edge view of Fig. 3; Fig. is an enlarged side elevafew o f the shortlever nine; of.
handle or grip and the partaat'tnehed the etogfand Fig. 6 is an enlarged .ci'-oss-seetion 0n the line. 3. i
Iteferringto'thedrawings, C, rcpi'esents a cylinder of :rconventicmal type of g'iLSUlQDG I and P, the piston or piston-head .op-
erating therein as well understood inrthe art. These piston heads are provided wlth' annular grooves which receive the packing rings It; a prevailing formof such ring heing a resilient split", hand whose tenninals are normalLv separated by, as'paeea allowing the ring to he contracted while being iusertedin o the grtmve' designed to receive it. 'lhegr )ove itself does not appeal in the drawings, ieing filled withthering it in Fig. 'l."ill= istration thereof lacing however unma-essal since the same is well under stood in tiienrt.
'lhe invention comprises a handle or grip composed of the long lever arms I, l, and shortlever arms or jaws 2, on the order ot a pair o'l -pliers,o,ne ol'fthe short arms having pivotallv coupled to the free end thereof a pivot hlovk or anchor member 3 provided with a pair of cars or lugs 4 through which and through the lever arm passes the hinge pin 5. The base of the l)l()(l( 3 is riveted or otherwise secured to one end of aUronti-ai-tiile clamp-hand Gwvhieh is of suftirient dimension to aeeonnuodate or span rings ranging in size say fromtwo and onehalf to si1: inches in diameter (-or. rings ranging in tween any other predetermined limits). The free end of the opposite short l is pivotally roupleil hr means of: a pin 5 hitween the adjacent terminals ol'- a pair of inks 7 whose opposite ends are, pivotall connected to a pin 8 passed loosely through th outer termiualdmip ll of a linlc 1), the inner endol' said link heing pivotally Patented May :1 -1 9.1 7.

'lhe handh is.proviiled with anae ia handlwsprmg or"gripsprmg'S as. well u'nder-- stood in the art.'
follows: 'llle'anehor-ii is seCl-Ireilto one. end ol'the eon'tl artihlo rlampdmnd (S, the hody of tween the. hloek l2 and the nose 1! of ille ice the hand passing morerorless loosely l egrippin dog or cam formed on the lever 9. ormal y, the resilience of the spring 13 enga ing the links 7 causes the latter to exert an cient draft on the .lever 9 to maintain the nose 1 thereof well engaged with the band 6, a closing movement of the levers drivin the nose forcibly against the band and e ectively gripping the same between the nose and the block 12. With one end of the band thus anchored to the block 3, and an intermediate portion gripped between the nose n of the dog and the sliding block 12, it is apparent that if we first adjust the band 6 so as to just encompass the packing ring B (Fig. 2) while the latter is maintained opposite the groove of the pistonhead and then close the levers 2, 2, to the position indicated in Fig. 3, the ring will be closed or contracted so as to enter the groove of-the piston. By now lowering the piston with its ring into the cylinder until the rin comes partially opposite or within the we ls of the cylinder, the grip on the ring ma be-released and the piston and ring pus ed into the cylinder the entire distance as clearly obvious from Fig. 1 which shows the ring in the iston-head groove, and the piston shoved ar enough into the cylinder to ermitthe grip on the ri to be released and allow both piston and lung to be shoved intothe cylinder. In inserting the piston-head with the ring held contracted by the tool so as to remain in the groove of the piston, a slight pressure on the end of the piston-will force the piston and ring through the .clamp into the cylinder afterwh-ich. and when the ring comes op osite the cy'mder. walla-the gripv of the too may be slackenedand the tool "ulled away from the piston. "To quickly ad ust the band 6 to rings of difierent diameters it is desirable to overcome the natural grip or bite of the nose n on the band so that the latter may be freely and jquickl adjusted or moved between the nose an a block 12'to a point "where it will just embrace-the ring while the latter is in its expanded position (for example in Fig. 2).
thumb and forefinger so as to oscillate them toward one-another (see for e'xample'the dotted position of the parts in Fig. 5'),
' whereby the dog or nose 1?. will be rocked To accomplish the theoperator-v seizes the members 7 and 9 between his.
The details may in a measure be departed from without in any wise involving a de arture from the spirlt f my invention. he contractible band. 6 may be said to have one relatively fixed end, and one free end, and adaptedto be seized at any desired point (within certain limits of course) between these ends, and the fixed end and the point thus seized drawn together and the band contracted.
Having described my invention what I claimis:
1. In a.tool of the character described, a
contractible band, a pair of pliers, a block permanently anchored to one end of the band and pivotally cou led to one of the plier jaws, a second bloc slidable along the band, a dog cooperating with said sliding block and positioned to bring the band between the do and block, links connecting said dog to t e opposite jaw of the pliers,
and a spring exerting a draft on the links for normally forcing the dog into engagement with the band and causing the band to be gripped between the dog and block.
2.. A clamping tool for exparisible piston rings comprisin a contractible band adapted to embrace t e ring, apair of pliers, a
block anchored to one end of the band, and provided with ears pivotally coupled to one of the 'aws of the pliers .a block slidable along t e bandand provided with. a pair of lugs 01'' ears between which the band 15 confined, a leverpivoted between. the lugs and provided with 'a' cam omnose for engaging the band, links couplingthe 0p osite aw of the liers to the cam lever, a exed spring having one end fixed to the jaw and its free end engaging the links to cause the same to exert a drafton the cam lever to normally force the cam a ainst the band and frie tionally hold the atter between the cam and the Sliding and contracted to close the packing ring confined within it. p
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature,
