Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 2, 1916. Serial No. 112,687.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES IRVING GRUMP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toys or Educational Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a fascinating sand toy of educational value, the idea being to provide the child with drawings constituting a sort of negative which he develops into multicolored pictures by selectively moistening or rendering adhesive the areas comprised within the drawings and sifting sand of different colors thereover, the interior of the drawings being preferably coated with a film of dry glue. A set embodying the invention accordingly comprises a suitable collection of the drawings coated with or adapted to re ceive adhesive and a plurality of supplies of sand dyed in difierent colors.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention:
Figures 1, 1 and 1 represent semi-diagrammatically part of the equipment, the same comprising a plurality of packets or containers of sand dyed different colors, a sponge or moistening device, and a shaker or sieve for applying the sand to the drawmgs;
Fig. 2 is a view of one of the sheets of paper or the like bearing one of the gluecoated line drawings;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating the operation of applying sand to one of the areas of the picture;
Fig. 4: is another view showing this stage of the operation completed; and
Fig. 5 is a yiew showing the line drawing completely transformed into a multi-colored picture, the sand covering the respective areas being represented by hatching indicating different colors.
Fig. 1 shows a page or sheet of drawing such as the invention contemplates. The particular drawing selected for illustration includes areas numbered 1 to 15, all coated with a film of dry glue. It will be understood that the equipment will comprise a plurality of these drawings, of different subject-matter, suitably packaged or preferably bound in book form. These books may be devoted to different departments and may bear such titles as The Sand Mans Circus Book, The Sand Mans Alphabet, etc. In order to keep the sheets from adhering to each other they may be interleaved with oil-paper in the well-known manner.
The set also includes a suitable number of supplies of ordinary beach sand dyed different colors, a sponge or brush for moistening the areas of the drawing, and a shaker, sieve or pouring device of any suitable character for applying the sand.
To color or develop the drawings the child selects any one of the areas, and moistens the glue thereof, being careful not to exceed the boundary lines of the particular area. Then, having decided upon the color to be applied to this area, he places some of the sand of that color in the shaker and sifts the same over the moistened portion of the drawing. In doing so, however, he does not have to confine the rain of particles to the precise area, because the sand which falls outside can readily be shaken or brushed oif the sheet when that part of the drawing has been finished. In the same way he proceeds to color the remainder of the drawing, moistening and sanding the areas in succession until the picture is completed, the free excess particles of each-stage of the development being removed before the next area is moistened. These operations constitute an absorbing game for the child and at the same time afford valuable training in color, form and control. Many interesting experiments in color may be made by making mixtures of the different colors of sand and applying the mixtures to the sticky areas.
What I claim as new is:
1. A toy or educational device comprising a page or sheet bearing an outline drawing the areas of which are coated with a film of dry glue to be developed. by the child by selectively moistening the areas and applying thereto sand of different colors.
2. A toy or educational device comprising a sheet of paper or the like or a collection of sheets bearing pictures coated with a film of dry glue adapted to be colored by moistening and the application of colored sand thereto.
3. In a toy or educational device, the combination of a sheet of paper or the like or a collection of sheets bearing outline drawings divided into areas and coated with a film of dry glue, and supplies of sand of different colors adapted to be selectively strewn over the areas, the latter being moistened in succession.
4. A toy or educational set comprising one or more sheets of paper or the like hear ing drawings divided into dififerent areas and adapted to receive adhesive, and a plurality of supplies of difierently colored sand, whereby the child is enabled to produce 10 multi-colored sand pictures by selectively rendering the areas sticky and strewing the diflerent colored sands thereover.
5. A toy or educational set comprising one or more sheets of paper or the like bearing drawings divided into different areas, means for selectively rendering said areas adhesive, and a plurality of supplies of difierently colored sand adapted to be strewn over the sticky areas.
