Description

HENRY M. BEECHER.
Improvement in Carriage Spring Clip and Plate.
No. 122,428, K n I Patentedlan-Q, i872.
HENRY M. BEECHER, or PLANTSVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-SPRING CLIPS AND PLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent "No. 122,428, dated January 2, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. BEECHER, of Piantsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented new 1111- provements in Carriage Spriu g Clips and Plates, of which the following is a specification My invention consists in the employment of a groove running longitudinally through un- .central, longitudinal, and vertical section of the same. 7
A A designate the spring-clips, which may be made of anyv design desired. On the under side of the head a is a groove, b, Fig. 2. This groove is formed by compression in the act of forgingthe article, and "therefore the stock is reduced at the head a and thrown outward toward the intersection of the head a and arms 0 0, whereby lamable to forge full and square corners (1 without previously upsetting the stock or using a rod of iron larger than is necessary to form the body of the arms 0 0. The arms 0 c are threaded and provided with nuts f, as in ordinary clips. The plate Bis cut out in dies from sheet metal, and may he plain or as ornamental as may be desired. On or neareach end of the plate B I strike up or swage a ridge, h, the position of which is indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1.
The clips A A are placed over the plate B, the ridge It being received in the groove b, which will, when the clips are drawn down by means of the nuts f f, hold said clips from working sidewise on the plate.
By my invention the plates are cheaply made, and the ridge thereon is entirely hid from view, while the groove, in addition to performing the oftice of holding the clip in place, produces the desirable and perfect square corners without adding auythln g to the cost of production.
I claim as my invention- 1. A carriage-springclip in which the groove b is forged in the under side of the head, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The clips A A provided with the groove J b, in combination with the sheet-metal plate B provided with the single swaged ridge h at or near each end, all substantiallyas andfor the purpose describcdT"3= \Vitnesses J Aims SHEPARD,
