EXHIBITING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1, 1917.
Application filed. November 22, 1916. Serial No. 132,855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BREWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exhibiting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to exhibiting devices and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be readily and conveniently erfgaged with window sills or other supporting ledges.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be employed with facility in the displaying of cards, banners or other objects.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character comprising a body member consisting of a plurality of sections relatively adjustable longitudinally so that the same may be readily positioned within windows or other openings of various sizes.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved exhibiting device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely .claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating an exhibiting device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in top plan with the supporting rod in section of one end portion of the device as herein embodied;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4c is a view in top plan of the slidable arm or clamping member as herein employed;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is an elevational view of the clip herein disclosed, detached; and
Fig. 7 is a view in side elevation of the clip as set forth in Fig. 6.
As disclosed in the accompanying draw ings, 1, 2, 3 and 4 denote elongated sections of predetermined dimensions and of substantially the same lengths with the adjacent end portions of said members in overlying relation, and said members are provided with the longitudinally directed slots 5 through which are disposed the headed members 6 whereby said sections are efl'ectively guided in their movements, and whereby the extent of their movements in opposite directions may be positively limited.
Threaded through the overlying portions of certain of the sections and herein disclosed as sections 2, 3 and 4, are the set screws 7, each of which being adapted to coact with an adjacent section whereby the sections may be effectively held in their various longitudinal adjustments.
The outer end portions of the sections 1 and 2 but on opposite faces are provided with the transversely disposed grooves 8 in each of which is adapted to be seated the elongated rod 9 provided at its upper end with a laterally directed extension 10 terminating in the depending finger 11 which is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of a window sill or other support, whereby the device may be supported in applied position, and in order to facilitate such contact the end of the finger 11 is provided with a tip 12 of rubber or other suitable material. Coacting with each of the rods 9 is a clamping plate 14: undercontrol of the winged nut 15 threaded upon the headed screw 16 directed through the adjacent portion of the section.
20 denotes a movable clamping member freely slidable upon, the rod 9and provided with an upstanding finger 18 adapted to engage the under surface of a sill or other supporting ledge, and the upper end of said finger 18 is also preferably provided with the tip 19 also of rubber or similar material.
After the fingers 11 have been properly engaged with a sill or other supporting ledge, the sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 are moved upwardly which results in the sliding clamping arm 20 being also moved upwardly into contact with the end portion of a sill or other ledge and after this adjustment of the members the clamping plates 14 are caused, through the proper manipulation of the winged nuts 15, to' hold the sections and the clamping arms 20 against downward movement.
Each of the rods 9 is disposed through an opening 21 in its coacting clamping arm 20 and said opening 21 has in communication therewith an open end slot 22 of a width less than the diameter of the opening 21. At a predetermined point intermediate its length and preferably adjacent its lower end the rod 9 has an annular reduced portion 23 adapted to pass through the open slot 22, whereby it will be perceived that the arm 20 may be readily engaged with or removed from the rod 9.
The lower ends of the rods 9 are provided with the angular portions 24. preferably formed into eyes and which afford convenient means whereby a banner, a flag, or other emblems may be readily engaged therewith so that the same may be conveniently supported for display by my improved exhibiting device.
I also find it of advantage to provide the under edges of the sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 with the hook members 25 to afford means whereby the cards or the like may be suspended from the sections, said cards being preferably of such a size as to arrange letters thereon to display any desired notice or reading matter for public observation.
Each of the sections 1, 2, 3 and t adjacent an end thereof is provided with a laterally directed headed shank 26 substantially flat with its flattened faces disposed longitudinally of the sections, and coacting with each of said headed shanks 26 is a clip C preferably comprising two relatively movable clamping members and one of which members being provided with an arm 27 having a slot 28 to receive a shank 26, whereby the clip C is suspended with the arm 27 thereof substantially vertical.
In communication with the slot 28, which is preferably disposed transversely of the arm 27, is an open end slot 29 angularly related to the slot 28, whereby it is necessary to throw the arm 27 to an angle of about 45 in order to apply or remove the same. The clips C are adapted to be engaged with substantially large placards of any desired character and for any particular purpose.
I also find it of advantage to thread through each of the arms 20 a set or binding screw 30 adapted to coact with the coacting rod 9 so that the arm 20 may be effectively maintained in requisite clamping position in the event it is impossible to employ the sections 1 and 2 for a similar purpose.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that an exhibiting device constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the'principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. An exhibiting device comprising an elongated member, supporting means carried thereby at longitudinally spaced points, each of said supporting means comprising an elongated rod, and means for detachably en'- gaging the rod with the member, one end of said rod being of a hook-like formation.
2. An exhibiting device comprising an elongated member, supporting means carried thereby at longitudinally spaced points, each of said supporting means comprising an elongated rod, and means for detachably engaging the rod with the member, one end of said rod being of a hook-like formation, the opposite end of said rod being provided with engaging means.
3. An exhibiting device comprising an elongated member, supporting means carried thereby at longitudinally spaced points, each of said supporting means comprising an elongated rod, means for detachably engaging the rod with the member, one end of said rod being of a hook-like formation, and a clamping arm slidably engaged with the rod intermediate the hook-like portion thereof and the member.
4. An exhibiting device comprising an elongated member, supporting means car ried thereby at longitudinally spaced points, each of said supporting means comprising an elongated rod, means for detachably engaging the rod with the member, one end portion of said rod being of hook-like formation, said rod at a predetermined point intermediate its length being provided with an annular reduced portion, and a clamping arm provided with an opening through which the rod is adapted to be disposed, said arm also having an open slot in communication with the opening of the arm and of a width less than the diameter of said opening and through which the annular reduced portion of the rod is adapted to pass.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. JOHN H. BREWER.
