- candescent electric lamps upon automobile bodies in such relation with a license number plate holder as to illuminate a license number plate thereon, and it is an object of my invention to provide a lamp structure.
which may be manufactured at less cost than ordinary lamp structures of the class contemplated, and including manually operative switch mechanism which is substantially inclosed by the lamp holder and the conduit for the electrical conductors leading thereto.
As hereinafter described, my invention includes the combination with a lamp casing which has a cylindrical shell of sheet metal having a circumferential opening, and a rear axial opening surrounded by a tubular shank; of a translucent element, conveniently a glass tube, `fitted in said-shell in concentric relation therewith and covering said circumferential opening; a translucent panel, conveniently a lens, at the front end of said shell; means arranged to engage the edge of said lens and the end of said shell, so as to detachably connect them; an electric lamp holder fitted in said shank; means detachably securing said lamp holder in said shell; a plate having an opening through which said shank extends; a bracket in integral relation with said plate, having a conduit socket'and clamping means for said socket, and a base extending obliquely with respect to the axis of said lamp holder, provided with means for attaching it upon an inclined surface of the vehicle; a conduit in said socket in axial alinement with said lamp holder; a switch in said conduit in operative relation with said lamp, including a rotary sleeve carrying electrical contacts; electric conducting means extending in said conduit in connection with said switch; a license number plate holder in integral relation with said plate and bracket; and
means carried by-said plate holder arranged to detachably secure a license number plate in position to be illuminated by light projected from said lamp through said circumferential opening inl said shell.
My invention includes the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.

Referring to the form of my invention shown in Figs. Ito IV inclusive; the lamp casing 1 includes the cylindrical shell of sheet metal 2 having the circumferential opening 3 and an axial opening surrounded by the split tubular shank 4, at one end, and the cap 5, which is flanged to form an annular shoulder at the other end,`havin the screw flange 6 engaging the threads on said shell. The translucent cylindrical tube 8, preferably glass, is fitted concentrically in said shell 2 covering said circumferential opening 3. The plane sheet metal reiector 9 having the axial opening 10, in coaxial relation with said axial opening in said shell 2, and the marginal spring members 11- struck up from it, (as best shown in Fig. IV) resiliently bears upon one end of said tube 8, i
preventing it from rattling; said tube 8 and the /translucent panel 12 at the outer end thereof, which rests upon the annular shoul-V der formed by said tube 8, being held in place by said cap 5. y
The incandescent lamp holder 14 being fitted in the axial openings ino said shell 2 and refiector 9 are rigidly secured by the flexible clamp 15, encircling said casing shank 4, and contracted by the bolt 16 and nut 17. Said clamp 15 is pivotally connected, by the rivet 18, to the plate 19 which has the opening 20, through which said casing shank 4 extends and` is in rigid relation with the bracket 21 having the conduit socket 22 clamped by the screw 23.

It may beobserved that said casing 1 has the annular rib 29, in coaxial relation with said lamp holder, projecting beyond the rear wall 13 of said casing and forming a solid bearing against said plate 19, and a circumferential outwardly projecting bead 39 at the junction of said rear wall 13 with the cylindrical portion of said shoulder 2.
Said conduit 25 carries the electric switch 26 in operative relation with the electric incandescent lamp 27; said switch includes the rotary sleeve 28 'carrying electrical contacts, for connection with the single/wire conductor 30; said conduit being the other conductor of the circuit including the generator. Said switch 26 is held in open and closed position by the stud 31 engaging respective locking recesses at opposite ends of" the oblique cam slot 32 in said holder 14; the lamp 27r being detachably secured in said holder by the stud 33 on the lamp plug 34 engaging the bayonet slot 35; said lamp and switch being outwardly pressed by spring plungers in the insulating bushing 36.
Said bracket 21 has the license number plateholdery 3,7 held in rigidrelation therewith by the bolts 38 and nuts 40; said holder 37 having slots 41 and means for detachably rsecuring the license number plate 42 including the bolts 43 and wing nuts 44; whereby said plate 42 may be held in position to be illuminated by light projected from said lamp casing 1 through said opening 3. Such number plates being coated with a frangible glass enamel, which might be cracked by direct pressure of said nuts 44; I provide the fiexible resilient washers 45 and plane washers 47 between said nuts and through the slots 41 insaid holder 37 and have squared shoulders 49 engaging the side of said slots 41 to prevent their rotation.
Referring to the form of my invention shown in Figs. V, VI and XI; the lamp casing 51, which is similar to the casing 1 above described, includes the cylindrical shell of sheet metal 52 having the circumferential opening 53 and an axial opening surrounded by the split tubular shank 54, at one end, and, at the other end, the annular shoulder formed by the wall of the annular groove 55 for the spring retaining ring 56 with projecting ends 57v by which it may be grasped. Said shell is fitted with the translucent cylindrical tube 58, in concentric re-v lation therewith,' covering said circumferential opening 53, and with the translucent panel 59 backed by the panel 60 including two films of translucent Celluloid with an opaque film between them, which may be so `constructed as to show a red signal or display a word or other sign. Said panels 59 and 60 and the tube 58 are normally retained in said casing 51 by said ring 56; said tube 58 forming an annular shoulder, at the outer end thereof, supporting said panels 59 and 60.
The incandescent lamp holder 62 being fitted in the axial opening in said shell 52; is rigidly secured by the flexible clamp 63, encircling said casing shank 54, and contracted by the bolt 64 and nut 65. Said clamp 63 is pivotally connected, by the rivet 67, to the plate 69 which has the opening 70, through which said tubular shank 54 ex- Y tends and which is connected, by the yoke 73, with the bracket 74 having the socket 75, clamped by the bolt 76 and nut 77, engaging the shank 78 of the triangular obliquely extending base plate 79, which may be fastened to the'mud guard 80 of a vehicle conveniently by rivets 81. Said casing 5l has the annular rib 82, in coaxial relation therewith, bearing against said plate 69.
This form of my invention having no switch mechanism; the wire conductor 83 is electrically connected in circuit with the incandescent lamp 84 by the screw 85 in the insulated bushing 86 of said holder 62.
, The license number plate and appurtenances shown in Figs. V, VI and XI being similar to those shown in Figs. I to IV, are indicated by the same reference marks.
Referring tothe form of my invention shown in Figs. VII to IX inclusive; the lamp casing 88, which is similar to the casing 51 above described, includes the cylindrical shell of sheet metal 89 having the circumferential opening 90 and an axlal opening surrounded by the split tubular shank 91, at one end, and, at the other end, the annular groove 92 for the spring retaining ring 93 with projecting ends 94. Said shell is fitted with the translucent cylindrical tube 96 in concentric relation therewith covering said circumferential opening 90, and with the red Fresnel lens 97, both being held in position by said ring 93. This form of my invention having the same elements as Figs. I to IV for holding the lamp and license number plate, I have indicated them by the same reference marks. However, the bracket is carried by the base plate 98, similar to the plate 79, instead of' by the conduit 25 shown in Figs. I to IV; said base plate 98 being conveniently secured to the mud 'V guard 99 of a vehicle, by rivets 100.
Fig. X is a sectional view of the switch mechanism shown in Figs. I to IV and VII to IX inclusive; wherein thlamp holder 14 has the bayonet slot 35 engaged by the studs 33 on the plug 34 of the lamp 27. The switch 26 having the rotary plug 28 is held in open and closed position by Jthe studs 31 engaging locking recesses respectively at opposite ends of, the oblique cam slot 32 in said holder. The cap 101, of said. switch secures the insulating bushing 102 which has the central conductor terminal 103 electrically connected with the wire con ductor 30 b v the screw 1 04 extending flange of the thimble 108 and the inwardly turned flange of' said thimble engaging said spring 106 keep them in operative relation.
Said insulating bushing 36, which is stationaryin said holder-14, has plungers 114 and 115 pressed apart by the spring 116, to insure good electrical connection between said conductor terminal 103 and the lamp 27 and retain the latter in position; said plungers being held in saidy bushing by the screw sleeves 117 and 118. The lamp circuit includes said conductor 30, its terminal 103, said plungers 114 and 115, the Wire through said lamp plug 34, the lament of said lamp 27, the other wire through said plug 34, the outer metallic shell of said plug, -and the lamp holder 14 which is in electrical connection with metallic portions of the vehicle through the bracket 21.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. XII and XIII; the lamp casing 122 comprises the cylindrical. shell of sheet metal 123 having the circumferential opening 124 and an axial opening surrounded by the split tubular shank 125 and has the annular groove 126 engaged by the spring ice retaining ring 127 which has its end 128 `offset inwardly to facilitate the removalof shank 125 and holder 134, and is arranged to he contracted by the bolt 137 and nut 138. Said clamp is pivotally connected by the rivet 139 to said plate 133 having the opening 130 w'hich is larger at 135 to allow for slightvariations in the position of said clamp 136.
Said plate 133 is part ofthe bracket 140 which eoniprises a license number plate holder, including the vertical plate 142 extending parallel with said plate 133, and
having the forwardly projecting flange 144 serving as an abutmentl l'or the upper and left hand edges oll the vehicle license number plate 115, and having the tabs 146 and 147 overhanging the l'ront of said plate, as best shown in Fig. Xlll. Said plate 145 carries the bolt 43 and wing nut 44 whereby it may be detachably secured on said holder in position to be illuminated by light projected from said lamp easing .122 through said opening 124. Said b olt 43 extends through the slot 148 in said plate 145 and throughl the slot 149 in said holder plate 142, both of which are narrower than the head 151 on said bolt. However, said slot 149 has the enlargement 152 at its end remote from said casing 122, as shown in Fig. XIII, which is large enough to permit said bolt head to be Withdrawn from the plate holder when in registry therewith; so that it is unnecessary to remove said bolt 43 or nut 44 in order to detach said plate 145 from said plate holder. However, to prevent accidental registration of said bolt head with said enlargement 152I provide said bracket with the projection 153, best shown in Fig. XII, so that said nut 44 must be withdrawn at least to the extent of said abutment 153 to permit said head 151 to"- be brought into registry with said enlargement 152.

In Figs. XIV to XVI inclusive; the lamp casing 168, which is similar to the casings above described has two circumferential openings 169 and 170, the latter being covered by the translucent panel 171 which may be constructed like the panel 60 or may be a single sheet of Celluloid, colored or clear, held in position by the inwardly pressed spring tabs 172 which are distinct from the opening 170. Said casing 168 has the translucent tube 173, (which may be made in separable sections of different colors,) and the lens 174 held therein by the spring ring 175, and carries the lamp holder 176 having the lamp 177 detachably fitted therein and'eleetrically connected with the conductors 184 and sov 185 in the terminal plug 186 which is detachably engaged in said lamp holder 176, as above described. Said holder 176 is secured by the spring clamp 167, such as above described. C l
The lamp casing supporting plate 183 is in unitary relation with the bracket 191, which includes the license number plate in concentric relation with said casing 168 4 holder 201, extending upon one side thereof above said casing 168, detachably supporting the license 4 number plate 178. Said. plate holder 201 has means for attaching it to the vehicle, including the base socket 179 with the elongated slot 180 having the central enlargement 181 extending vertically therethrough, bein so shaped to receive and engage the di erent forms of fixtures with which automobiles are ordinarily provided; said sockety 179 having clamping means including the set screw 182 common to Isaid slot and said enlargement.
The casing 187 shown in Fig. XVII is similar to said casing 168 but has tabs 188 struckl from the opposite end edges of the circumferential openin 189, detachably holding the translucent exible panel 190 in registry with said opening.
In Figs. XVIII and XIX; the lamp casing 192 has the circumferential opening 193 and an axial opening surrounded by the split tubular shank 194, and is fitted with the translucent cylindrical tube 195 in concentric relation therewith and covering said opening 193; said tube 195 and the lens 196 being held in position by the spring ring 197 engaging the edge of said lens and the annular groove 198 in said casing192.l Said casing has the annular rib 199l in coaxial relation therewith bearing against the plate 200 of the bracket 205 having the base socket 202. The electric incandescent lamp 203 is detachably secured in the lamp holder 204,
menace? which is held in said shank 194 in coaxial relation with said casing 192 by the flexible clamp 206, contracted by the bolt 207 and nut 208 and pivotally connected to said plate 200 by the rivet 209. Said socket 202 has the elongated slot 211 with the central enlargement 21, and the set screw 213 common tok said slot and enlargement. The conductors 214 and 215 secured in the terininal plug 216 are electrically connected -to the lamp 203 through the holder 204.
In Figs. XX and XXI; the lamp casing 218, such as above described, is held in rigid relation with the supporting plate 219 l by the exible clamp 220 having the lug 221 engaging the recess 222 in said'plate, and arranged to be contracted by the bolt 224 and nut 225. Said plate has at its end remote from said casing 218 the bight 226 forming a base socket for engagement with a circular supporting fixture, and has the bolt 227 and nut 228 arranged to contract said bight.
In Figs. XXII and XXIII; the lamp casing 230 has the arcual slots 231 in its rear wall, and is itted with the translucent cylindrical cup 232, which may be colored glass, and has the axial opening 233 for a lamp holder; the arrangement being such that a Warning light will be manifested from the rear of said casing230 when a lighted lamp is contained therein.
Figs. XXIV and XXV illustrate a Jform of my invention in which the lamp casing supporting plate 234 has the opening 235 with a recess 236, similar to said recess 222, and is in unitary relation with the base socket 237 having the vertical opening 238,
' for engagement with a supporting fixture,
and the screw threaded boss 239 for a set screw or other clamping means.
In Figs. XXVI and XXVII; the lamp casing supporting plate 240 is in unitary relation with the bracket 241, which is similar to the bracket shown in Figs. XIV and XV, and carries the lamp casing including the metallic shell 242 and the translucent cylindrical cup 243; the latter being preferably of molded colored glass, having the unitary Fresnel lens 244, is retained by its annular bead 245 in the ange 246 of said casing 242. The lamp holder bushing 248, which is conveniently soldered to the incandescent lamp holder 249, is detachablyv held i in said plate 240 by the flexible clamp 250 pivotally connected to said plate by the rivet 251 and arranged to be contracted by the bolt 252 and nut 253. Said holder 249 carries the detachable lamp 254 and the terminal plug 255 having the conductors 256l and 257.
In Figs. XXVIII and XXIX; the lamp casing 260, having the, circumferential o ening 261 and an axial opening surrounde by the split shank 262, is fitted with a translu- -ceut tube and lens similar to those above described. rIhe lamp holder 263 having the detachable plug 264 with conductors 265 and 266 is held in concentric relation with said casing 260 by the flexible clamp 267 ally connected with the bracket 268 by the rivet 270 and arranged to be contracted by the bolt 271 and nut 272. Said bracket 268 has the flange 27 3 in unitary relation therewith to support a license number plate holder and has holes 274 for bolts or rivets to secure said holder. `Said bracket`268`includes the forked base iange 275 arranged to be connected to a vehicle by the bolt 276, exible, resilient split washer 277 and nut 278.
In `Figs. XXX and XXXI; the lamp casing 280 is fitted with the parabolic reector 281 havin the outwardly turned flange 282 upon whic rests a translucent lens or panel 283; both said 'reflector and said panel being held in position by the spring ring 284 engaging the groove 285 of said casing 28.0. Said casing 280 is detachably held in the plate 287 of the bracket 288 by the flexible clamp289 pivot-ally connected therewith by the rivet 290, said clamp being contracted by thebolt 292 and nut 293. Said bracket 288 has a basec adapted for detachable engagement with either of the xtures aforesaid, or a vertical dash bar, including the rigid bifurcated jaw 294, having the stud 295 as a pivot for theloose jaw 296. Said base has clamping means including the bolt 297 held in said bracket by its square shoulder 298 and carrying the wing nut 299. Said jaw 296 is prevented from turning in a vertical plane by said stud 295 extending in the hole 300 therein.
In Figs. XXXII and XXXIII vI have 'shlwn in a single structure, including the l casing 229, various features shown 1n Figs. III, XI, XIII, XXII and XXIII and, as they are identified with the same reference marks as in those figures, it is unnecessary to further describe them, except to note that the panel 60 with translucent and opaque portions forming a word sign as indicated in Fig. XXXII, consists of the two translucent .flexible Celluloid lms 301 and 302 with a lm of opaque material 304 between them.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement above described as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as dened in the appended claims.
I claim 1. The combination with a lamp casing including a shell of sheet metal having a circumferential opening, and an axial opening surrounded by a tubular shank; or' a translucent element fitted in said shell in coaxial relation therewith and covering said circumferential opening; a translucent elepivotv the axial opening in said shell; and means detachably securing said lamp holder in said shell, in coperative relation with both of said' translucent elements.
2. The combination with a lamp casing including a cylindrical shell of sheet metal having a circumferential opening, a rear laxial opening, and a rear eccentric opening;
of a single translucent circular body fitted in said shell in coaxial relation therewith, covering said circumferential and eccentric openings; an electric n incandescent lamp holder fitted 1n the axial opening in said shell; and means detachably securing' said lamp holder in said shell in coperative coaxial relation with saidlbody.
3. The combination with a lamp c asing including a `shell of sheet metal having a circumferential opening, a rear axial opening, and a rear eccentric opening; of a single translucent circular body fitted 1n said shell in coaxial relation therewith, covering said circumferential and eccentric openings; an electric incandescent lamp holder fitted in the axial opening in said shell; and means detachably securing said lamp holder in said shell in eoperative coaxial relation with said body.
4. The combination with a lamp casing including a shell of sheet metal havin an axial opening and a rear eccentric opening; of a translucent body fitted in said shell in coaxial relation therewith, having a red portion Vcovering said eccentric opening; an electric incandescent lamp holder fitted in the axial opening in said shell; an incandescent lamp in said holder; and means detachably securing said lamp holder in said shell in coperative coaxial relation with said' body; whereby said lamp is adapted to project light from said casing to appear red at said eccentric opening but clear elsewhere.
5. The combination wvith a lamp casing including a shell of sheet metal having an axial opening and a rear eccentric opening;
of a translucent body fitted in said/shell in coaxial relation therewith, having a portion covering said eccentric opening; an. electric incandescent lamp holder fitted 1n the axial opening in said shell; and means detachably securing said lamp holder in said' shell in such coperative coaxial relation with said body as to cause light to be projected radially through said body from said lamp holder.
6. The combination with a lamp casing includinga cylindrical shell of sheet metal having an axial opening surrounded by a split tubular shank; of a plate through which said shank extends; an electric incandescent lamp holder fitted in said shank; and means detachably securing said casing, plate and lamp holder in assembled relation, including a flexible clamp-encircling said shank, and a bolt extending through said clamp and arranged to contract the latter.
7. The combination with a lamp casing including a shell of sheet metal having an annular shoulder and groove; of a rigid translucent panel fitted in said shell adjacent said groove; a flexible panel, extending parallel with said rigid panel and inside the latter, in said casing, consisting of translucent fiexible Celluloid with a film of opaque material; and means fitted in said groove, engaging said shoulder, arranged to secure said panels in said shell.
8. The combination with a lamp casing Y casing arranged to secure said easing, holder and support in assembled relation, including a flexible clamp encircling said shank, and a bolt extending through said clamp and arranged to contract the latter. l
10. The combination with a lamp easing including a shell having an axial tubular shank and an annular rib in coaxial relation therewith projecting beyond the rear wall of said casing; of a lamp holder extending into said shank; a support engaging said shank and bearing against said rib; and clamping means arranged to secure said casing, holder and support in assembled relation.

The combination with a lamp casing including a cylindrical shell having a circumferential opening, an axial tubular shank and an annular rib in ycoaxial relation therewith projecting beyond the rear wall of said casing, said wall being curved forwardly between said rib and the perimeter of the casing and having a circumferentially, outwardly projecting bead at the junction of said rear wall with the cylindrical portion of said shell; of a lamp holder said circumferential opening and bearing against said rea-rivali at said bead; a translucent element at the front of said casing; and means engaging said casing at the front thereof, securing both of said translucent elements in assembled relation; whereby, a single lamp may be held in said holder in position to project light through both of said translucent elements and through said circumferential opening.
12. |The combination with a lamp casing including a cylindrical shell having a circumferential opening, an axial tubular shank and an annular rib in coaxial relation therewith projecting beyond the rear Wall of said casing; of a lamp holder extending into said shank; a support engaging said shank and bearing against said rib; clamping means arranged to secure said casing, holder and support in assembled relation; a translucent element in saidcasing, in concentric relation therewith, covering said circumferential opening; a translucent element at the front of said casing; and means engaging said casing at the front thereof, securing both of said translucentelements in assembled relation; whereby, a single lamp may be held in said holder in position to project light through both of said translucent elements and through said circumferential opening.

The combination with a lamp casing including a cylindrical shell of sheet metal having a circumferential opening, and an annular shoulder and groove at one end; of a translucent cylindrical tube fitting in said shell in coaxial relation therewith and covering said circumferential opening; a translucent panel fitted in said shell at the grooved end thereof; and means engaging said shoulder arranged to secure said panel in said shell and press it inwardly toward the end of said tube.

The combination with a lamp casing including an annular shell of sheet metal having a circumferential opening, and an annular shoulder and groove at one end; of a translucent tube fitting in said shell in co* axial relation therewith and covering said circumferential opening; a translucent panel fitted in said shell at the grooved end thereof; and means engaging said shoulder arranged' to secure said panel in said shell and press it inwardly toward the end of said tube.

The combination with a lamp casing including an annular shell of sheet metal having a circumferential opening, of a translucent tube fitting in said shell and covering said opening; a reflector at the inner end of said shell, having resilient portions offset from its plane bearing upon the end of said tube; and means, at the other. end of said casing, arranged to hold said tube against said reflector.
16.` The combination with a lamp casing including a shell of sheet metal having a perimetral opening; of a translucent body fitting in said shell and covering said opening; a refiector at the inner end of said shell having resilient members bearing upon said body; and means at the other end of said shell arranged to hold said body against said resilient members.
17. The combination with a lamp casing including a shell of sheet metal having a perimetral opening; of a translucent body fitting in said shell and covering said opening; an element at the inner end of said shell having resilient members bearing upon said body; and means at the other end of said shell arranged to hold said body against said resilient members.
