THOMAS H. WILLIAMSON, 0F. CARNE, NEW MEXICO.
WINDMILL.
Application filed October 12, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. VVILLIAM- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carne, in the county of Luna, State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in windmills.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a windmill which is so constructed that a direct force will be applied by the wind to the paddle wheel.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a guide or shield to guide the wind to the proper side of the wheel.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device;
Fig. 2 is a plan view;
Fig. 3 is a detail of the shield and tail removed, and
Fig. 4.- is a fragmental detail, showing the bearing member for the wheel and the shield.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views:
In the embodiment shown in the drawing, I have disclosed a platform which includes a track 1 which track is supported by suitable braces 2. This platform is adapted to be mounted upon a tower 3 which is repre sented conventionally in the drawing. Extending upwardly through the platform is a shaft 4 which projects through a bearing member 5. Rotatably mounted upon this bearing member 5 and secured to the shaft is a paddle wheel 6. This paddle wheel is provided with a casting 7 which r0- tates on the bearing member 5 and between which and the bearing member ball-bearings 8 are interposed.
In order that the wind may be directed to the proper side of the wheel 6. I have provided shield 9, the upper and lower plates of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2a, 1917.
Serial No. 55,478.
which are segmental and the vertical plate 10 of which is curved as illustrated in the drawing- This shield is provided at its upper side with a bearing member 10 which rotates upon the extended end of the shaft at and is provided at its lower side with a bearing member 12 which bears upon and rotates on the bearing member 5. Ballbearings are interposed between the bearing 12 and the bearing member 5 to reduce the friction between the same. It will be obvious that this shield will cover a portion of the wind wheel so as to direct the air to the proper side of the wheel. The upper and lower plates of the shield are provided with openings 14- through which the air which enters the shield may escape.
In order that the shield may be automatically turned as the wind shifts, I have extended a frame 15 from the shield on which a vane 16 is mounted. This frame is provided with a counter-weight 17 which is adapted to balance the weight of the shield. Secured to and depending from the shield is a plurality of rollers 18 which opcrate on the track 1 and assist in guiding the shield when it is being turned. The frame 15 is braced by means of a suitable rod 19 which extends from the shield 9 and is connected to the said'frame.
It is to be understood that the shaft may be provided with suitable gears for connecting it to a centrifugal pump or a plunger pump.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a simple windmill in which a shield for directing the wind to the wheel is used, which shield is turned automatically during the operation of the mill.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, it
has merely been for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that par ticular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the de tails of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 2- 1. In a windmill, the combination with a platform and a shaft vertically journaled therein. a wind-wheel rotative with said shaft above the platform, bearings mounted on the shaft above and below said windwheel. and rotative relative to the shaft, 3.
shield mounted on said bearings and consisting of upper and lower segmental plates and an arcuate web therebetween, a frame extending from the shield in diametrical alinement with the radial edges. at one end of the shield, a vane mounted upon the outer extremity of said frame, and a counterweight slidable on one of the horizontal arms of said frame between the shield and the vane to adjust the balance of the shield.
2. In a windmill, the combination with a platform anda shaft vertically journaled therein, a wind-wheel rotative with said shaft above the platform, bearings mounted on the shaft above and below said windv-rhecl, and rotative relative to the shaft, a shield mounted on said bearings and consisting of upper and lower segmental plates and an arcuate web therebetween, supporting rollers interposed between the shield and the platform, a frame extending from the shield in diametrical alinement with. the radial edges at one end of the shield, a vane mounted upon the outer extremity of said frame, and a counterweight slidable on one of the horizontal arms of said frame be tween the shield and the vane to adjust the balance of the shield.
3, In a windmill, the combination with a platform and a shaft projecting vertically through the latter, a wind-wheel carried by the shaft to rotate therewith, a shield carried by the shaft and rotative thereon, said shield consisting of upper and lower segmental plates having bearings on the shaft at their centers, and a web joining their peripheral edges, a frame extending in diametrical alinement with the edges at one end of the shield, a vane carried by the extremity of the frame and a counterweight on one of the arms of the frame and horizontally slidable between the shield and the vane.
In testimony whereof, I; aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
