To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, Born C. MALIGK, a citizen, of the United States, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Shoe Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains gener ally to shoes or articles of foot wear, and relates more especially to means for protecting the feet of linemen and others who are compelled to climb poles.

Linemen and other pole climbers are subjected to considerable annoyance due to the fact that in climbing poles, the feet are pressed outwardly against the outside portions of the ordinary climbing devices which are attached to the legs, and as a result, the outer sides of the feet in pressing against the climbing devices are the cause of much discomfort and pain, resulting in bunion and other ailments. Considerable pain is also incurred by the constant bruising of the feet by pressure against the climbing implements.

The present invention aims to provide means for relieving the pressure against the outside of the foot, for the comfort and convenience of the linemen, and it is the object of the invention to provide novel and improved yet extremely simple, inexpensive, practical and efficient means for the intended purposes.

It is also the object of the invention to provide an attachment for shoes, for taking up the side thrust and relieving pressure when climbing poles.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the attachment.

The attachment comprises a sheet metal plate 1 having sufficient inherent rigidity or stiffness to resist bending, and said plate is provided with apertures 2 for the reception of screws 3 or other securing elements 4: for fastening the plate 1 to the under side of the shank 4 of a shoe or article of foot wear immediately in front of the heel. The plate 1 is provided with an extension 5 projecting from the outside of the shoe, the attachment illustrated being for the left foot. The extension 5 has a portion 6 bent back thereon, and said bent back portion 6 has an upstanding lip 7 adapted to rest against the outer edge of the shank 4, to take up the side thrust. The rear edge of the plate 1 has a downwardly bent or depending flange or lip 8 curved to fit the breast or forward end of the heel 9, to assist in taking up the strains, and the rear end of the extension 5 and bent back portion 6 as well as the lip 7 extend slightly beyond the flange 8 to overlap the outer side of the heel.

In use, the plate 1 seats upon the climbing implement, and provides a broad bearing surface for the foot, and also reduces wear upon the shank of the shoe. The extension 5 in projecting outwardly from the shoe prevents the shoe from shifting outwardly on the climbing implement, and the outer side of the foot is thus prevented from being pressed against the implement since it is held spaced from the outer portion of the implement by the extension 5, the bent back portion 6 and lip 7 preventing the shank 4 from shifting outwardly, and reducing to a minimum, shearing strain on the securing elements 3. The strains are also taken up by the flange 8 and rear protruding end of the extension 5 and bent back portion 6. The attachment is simple and can be quickly applied to the shoe, but is nevertheless thoroughly serviceable and efiicacious for the desired results.

In the modification illustrated in Fig. 4, the attachment is not used, and in its place, the shank 4 of the shoe is provided with an integral extension 5 extending outwardly, to fulfil the oflice of the extension 5 above tured with the extension 5 for use by linemen.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. An article of foot wear for use by pole climbers having a lateral extension at its outer side projecting outwardly a suiiicient distance to engage the outer portion of a climbing implement to prevent it contacting with the article of foot wear and without a part pressing against the upper of the article of foot wear.

2. An article of foot Wear adapted to be worn by pole climbers, the shank of which is provided with a lateral extension at the outer side projecting outwardly to such an extent as to engage the outer portion of a climbing implement to prevent it contacting with the article of foot wear.

3. An attachment applicable to an article of foot Wear used by pole climbers, having an extension to project from the outer side of the article of foot wear and so arranged as to engage the outer portion of a climbing implement to prevent it from contacting with the article of foot wear.

4- An attachment for an article of foot wear used by pole climbers, applicable to the shank and having a portion to rest against the outer edge of the shank and an extension projecting beyond said portion to such an extent as to engage the outer portion of a climbing implement and prevent it from contacting with the article of foot wear.

5. An attachment for an article of foot wear used by pole climbers, embodying a plate adapted to be secured to the shank of the article of foot wear and having a portion to rest against the outer edge of the shank and an outwardly projecting portion so arranged as to engage the outer portion of a climbing implement and prevent it from contacting with the article of foot wear.

6. An attachment for an article of foot wear used by pole climbers, embodying a plate having an outwardly projecting extension provided with a bent back portion to engage the outer end of the article of foot wear, said extension projecting outwardly to such an extent as to engage the outer portion of a climbing implement to prevent it from contacting with the article of foot wear.

7. An attachment for an article of foot wear embodying a plate having an outwardly projecting extension, said extension having a bent back portion, said bent back portion having a lip extending at an angle therefrom to fit the outer edge of the shank of the article of foot wear, and said extension projecting outwardly to such an extent I as to engage the outer portion of a climbing implement and prevent it from contacting with the article of foot wear.
