IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR TRANSMITTING MOTION.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,398, dated January 2, 1872.
Specification describing anew and Improved Apparatus for Transmitting Motion, invented by PETER MEHRHIOF, of (Jroton, in the county of Delaware, and State of New York, and FER- NANDO HEALY, of-Barrington, in the county oflBristol and State of Rhode Island.
Our invention consists in producing two rev olutions of the crank-shaft to one of the en gine, by a connection of the engine to'the walkingbeam by two rods connected together at one end, one of said rods being connected by its other end to an immovable body, and the other jointed at its other end to the walking-beam, the connecting-rod of the engine being jointed to the said rods, where they are jointed together, all in the manner of a toggle-jointed con- I nection, as hereinafter more fully described.
The drawing represents a sectional elevationof an apparatus illustrating our invention.
A represents the cross-head of an engine; B, the connecting-rod; O and D, the arms used to form the connection with the walking-beam E; I, the immovable point to which one of said arms is connected; G, the rod connecting the walking-beam with the crank-shaft; and H, the said crank-shaft. The joint F and The stroke of the engine is such as to move the joint K back and forth between the extremes L and M, which are equidistant and on opposite sides of the said vertical line, and thereby impart a double movement to the walkingbeam to a single stroke of the engine.
This mode of transmitting motion will be found desirable for driving the paddle-wheels of steamengines, and particularly so for driving propellers, being a cheap and simple substitute for the geared marine engines com monly used for driving them.
In using it for driving propellers the engine and walking-beam can be placed in line with the propeller shaft by interposing a cross-head and guides between the walking-beam and connecting-rod G, and arranging the Jatter to vibrate perpendicularly to the beam F.
The apparatus may, of course, be used for driving machinery of all kinds, but is more particularly applicable for paddle-wheels and propellers.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- The connection of the engine with the walking-beam by toggle-jointed arms 0 D and rod B, the arrangement being such that the walking-beam will have twomovements to one of the engine, all substantially as specified.
PETER MEHRHOF. FERNANDO HEALY.
