The objects of our invention are: First, to provide a feed roll for blanl gumming machines'k having a removable blank receivingk pad, one end of which is adapted to be clamped to said roll, while the other end is engaged by a tension device.
Further, to provide a feed roller for blank gumming machines having a longitudinal air passage and airy suction apertures leading therefrom through the periphery of the roll, said roll having a supporting shaft alsoprovided with an air passage connected at one end with the passage in theroll and adapted to .be connected at its other end with an air pump, said roll being surrounded` by a blank receiving pad of suitable material which is clamped at one end to the cylinder while itsk other end is secured to a rotatable pawl and ratchet controlled tension shaft, ysaid pad having apertures registering with' the suction apertures in the periphery of the roll.

`feeding mechanism which we do not illustrate herewith, and the feed roller receives them on a raised blanket or pad 3, that is cut out at its sides adjacent to its forwardly advancing rotating end to exactly the same outline and size asthe advancing feeding in end of each blank or label, and the feed vroller grips the blank or label and holds it by anL air suction force and feeds it to and delivers it to the gumming cylinder and `while there are a number of ways of carrying this feature of'our invention into effect, we preferably construct and arrange this new feed roller as follows:
The roller l is preferably hollow and has a circumferential shell and end lianges 4 and shaft supporting hubs 5 one at each end. This roller `is-provided with a gap 6 in its circumference, which extends entirely across it from end to end parallel .with its longitudinal axis. This gap is formed in the surface of the roller and along one edge of it a row of air suction inlet apertures 7 are formed that-extend down into its surface and y registery with a passage 8, that is formed in the feedroller shell, and which extends longitudinally across it from end to end. The entrance ends. of this air f reservoir are plugged up anda radially alined air reservoir aperture 9', is bored down through one end flange 4 ofthe roller into the axial center of the shaft. The entrance of this aperture at the surface of the roller is also plugged jup. Consequently this leaves a closed air reservoir passageway connecting theairinlet aperture with the axial center of theishaft, andan axial aperture 10 is bored inthe adjacent end of the shaft untilit intersects the radial reservoir aperture 9. This apertured end of the shaft is provided with a suitable thimble to which one end of a pipe 11 is connected, the opposite end of which extends to and is adapted to be connected toA an air pump that is secured on the base plate of the machine. This pump maybe actuated by a cam which is mounted on a shaft, and a rock arm which is provided with a roller that engages the cam. This rock arm is mounted on a shaft and its free end is connected to the piston rod of the pump. We do not however illustrate the pipe member, the hose or air pump or its cam actuated mechanism above mentioned, but they can be seen in our pending application for a patent filed May 25, 1915, Serial N o. 30471 for blank and label feeding and gumming rollers and cylinder for blank and label gumming machines. The row of air inlet apertures forms the blank receiving station of the feed roller, and the feed roller is positioned so that this row of air suction inlet apertures stands at its top and at the center of its vertical plane, and this vertical position of the roller and its air suction inlet apertures we term its blank receiving station, and the roller stops and is held stationary in this position or at this station long enough to receive a blank which is fed to it by an automatic blank feeding mechanism. Consequently this feed roller is an intermittently rotating blank feeding roller. WVe do not however illustrate the mechanism that intermittently rotates our feed roller or that cooperatively connects it with the blank gumming mechanism of blank gumming machines, as such mechanism is illustrated in our above mentioned applications. It is necessary that the feed roller come to a stop to receive each blank from the blank feeding mechanism, which is so positioned that the advancing edge of each blank is deposited by it directly on top of and over the longitudinally formed row of air inlet apertures. Consequently when this row of air'inlet air suction apertures is standing in a vertical plane, the roller stops and this row of air suction inlet apertures becomes its blank receiving station, and when the roller is standing at its blank receiving station the gap is positioned t0 the right of its row of air suction inlet apertures and close to them, and the side of the gap adjacent to the air inlet aperl tures slopes inwardly with a flat stepped surface far enough to receive a clamping strip 12 which is removably secured to it by cap screws 13. The edge of this clamping strip is provided with a downwardly projecting bead 14 which fits into a groove 14A formed in and across the flat surface of the gap. A round spindle 15, is rotatively mounted in this gap one of its ends being mounted in a lug 16 formed on one end of the roll, while its opposite end is mounted in a bushing 17, secured in the adjacent end of the roll. The
center of this spindle is provided with a longitudinal and diametrical slot 18, which is made wide enough to receive one end of a blanket. This blanket comprises preferably a piece of parchment paper, although any other suitable material may be used, and it is cut out in the form shown in Fig. 5. lThe edge of one end of it is recessed to allow it to fit loosely around the cap screws, and against the shoulder 19 and its other end is narrowed so that it will readily enter the slot 1S in the spindle. The body of this blanket is of thev full width of the blank or label, and it is made long enough to extend entirely around the feed roller and to allow its end to be placed under the strip and against its shouldered step, and be clamped in the groove 14A by the bead 1a of the strip. Then the slack is taken up and the blanket is tightened by turning the spindle, which is especially mounted to stretch the blanket pad around the feed roller and to secure it in a tightened or stretched condition, and to enable this to be done we provide one end of the spindle with a square wrench receiving shank Q0, which projects through the adjacent side flange a far enough to permit a wrench to be applied to it to turn the spindle. 0n the opposite end of the spindle we mount a ratchet wheel 21, which is engaged by a spring controlled pawl 22 which is arranged to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel, and to hold it and the spindle roll and the parchment blanket in adjusted positions. The ratchet wheel supporting end of the stem is preferably mounted in a bushing 17 which is secured to the adjacent end of the roller by screws 28. The stem is rotatably mounted in the bushing, and the ratchet wheel is secured to the terminal end of the shaft, which projects beyond the bushing and the adjacent end of the roller. This pawl 22 is pivotally mounted on the feed roller and its actuating spring 24 is also secured to the feed roller and is arranged to permit the pawl to be moved out of engagement with the ratchet wheel, and release a parchment blanket pad, when it is desired to do so, and to replace a used pad with a new one. Each one of these parchment blanket pads is provided with a row of apertures 25 through it adjacent to its edge portion, which are positioned at a sufficient distance from its clamping` edge portion to enable them to register over the air suction inlet apertures 7 lof the feed roller, when the adjacent end is clamped to the feed roller by the strip 1i'. This parchment blanket is adapted to form a raised cushioning pad member for the blanks. to rest on, and the air inlet apertures form blank gripping air suction force gripping impulse points that grip the edge of each blank to the pad. These blanket pads are provided in ample quantities to the operators of the feed rollers as they have tobe replaced by new ones occasionally, but each pad is cut away from the surface of the feed roller until it is of the exact size of the blank that is to be gummed as to its sides and its front end.
In Fig..6 we illustratea plan view of a pasteboard box covering blank 2, and in Fig. 5 we illustrate a Vplan view ofy the blanket pad showing indotted lines what its shape` would be when itsr sides at its front end are 4cut away to the size and shape of the box covering blank, lexcept as to its length. We have stated that they are preferably mounted ony and stretched on the roller before being cut to the size and shape of the blank, but if desired a blank may be laid on them and its outlines marked on the pad and the padk may bek cut out before they are placed -and stretched on the feed roller.
To have illustrated but five air suction inlet apertures in the blanket pad and roller, but more or less can be used if desired. VThe blanket illustrated is made for a medium sized blank. The combination in a blank or label icc rsaid roller through said blank into said feeding member, of a roller provided with a removable and renewable blank supporting blanket form of pad of parchment paper or other suitable material, said pad being provided With blank gripping air suction inlet apertures extending into said roller, and means including an air passage in said roller for producing` a blank gripping and holding air suction force'at the air inlet apertures of said pad.
7. A blank feeding roller having a blank or label supportinghblanket, means for removably and renewably securing said blanket on said roller, said blanket being of the saine shape as the feeding `forward end of said blank or label, and means including air suction inlet apertures in said blanket and roller for gripping and holding said blanks to said roller.
S. A blank feeding roller having a surrounding blanket supporting blanks of the same shape as the advancing end or feeding in end of said blank, and means for removably and renewably securing said blanket to said roller, and air suction inlet apertures through said pad into said feed roller.

A blank feeding roller having a surrounding blanket supporting blanks of the same shape as the advancing end or feeding in end oi said blank, and means for removably and renewably securing said blanket to said roller, air suction inlet apertures through said pad' into said ieed roller, said blanket pad being cut away at the sides ot its rotary advancing end to lit the sides of the Jiront end of said blank when said blank is properly7 fed to said air suction blank gripping apertures.

A. blank feeding roller provided With a peripheral gap, a shoulder in said gap, a clamping strip secured along the side of said shoulder by adjustable screws, a blank supporting pad surrounding said roller and having one end adapted to be placed under said clamping strip and having its adjacent edge arranged to lit around said screws and abut against said shoulder, a groore along said gap over which said blank extends, and a bead on said clamping strip arranged to clamp said blanket in said groove, and means for stretching` said blanket around and for securing its opposite end to said roller.
11. ln a blank feeding roller for blank gumming machines, the combination of a hollow cylinder provided With a gap, a Winding stem provided With a longitudinal slot mounted in said gap, said stem and roller being provided with a spring actuated paivl holding ratchet wheel mechanisin, a clamping strip in said gap adjacent to said Winding stem, and a blanket of parchment paper or other suitable material fastened at one end to said roller by said clamping strip and haring its-opposite end arranged and adapted to be inserted in said stems longitudinal slot, means for rotating said stem and locking it by said pawl Whereby said blanket is stretched around said feed roller and is removably and renewably secured thereto, said blanket and roller being provided with a lengitudinal row of blank gripping and holding air inlet apertures registering with each other and positioned adjacent to said clamping strip, and means including an air passageway in said roller connected with said air inlet apertures for renting an air suction force in said air inlet apertures.
